Overview

IBM Informix™ Extended Parallel Server (XPS) V8.50 is designed for the largest, most demanding, and most complex data warehouse applications. By including comprehensive data warehousing features and using a sophisticated shared-nothing underlying architecture, XPS achieves industry-leading performance and flexibility. This enables you to make more profitable decisions from complex, query-intensive, analytical applications.

The following products are bundled with IBM Informix XPS V8.50 or can be ordered separately for use with other servers.

IBM Informix Connect Runtime V2.81

This is the runtime library for the Client Software Development Kit (CSDK) V2.81.

CSDK is a collection of APIs that can speed development time for applications that work with IBM Informix Dynamic Server (IDS) and XPS. Using Informix CSDK, developers can write applications in the language they prefer, whether it is Java™, C++, C, ESQL, or any application tools with open database connectivity (ODBC) and/or OLE DB access. (OLE DB is a set of communication [COM] interfaces that provides applications with uniform access to data stored in diverse information sources regardless of location or type.)

This flexibility allows for more choice in programming environments, promotes easier and faster application development, and reduces the cost of training developers in new skills. With CSDK, developers can also build one application to access multiple IBM Informix databases, saving maintenance and support expenses, minimizing downtime, and further speeding application development. The CSDK APIs are optimized for accessing Informix databases.

IBM Informix Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) V2.21

The IBM Informix JDBC driver is a pure Java platform-independent, industry-standard, type 4 JDBC driver. It enables multi-tier Java application deployment against IBM Informix heritage database servers. It also provides superior performance and integration with IBM products like WebSphere® and eXtensible Markup Language (XML).

Description

IBM customers are using IBM Informix Extended Parallel Server (XPS) to meet their most demanding data warehouse requirements. Only IBM delivers terabyte scalability in a full, open systems environment with a focus on meeting real-world ad hoc query requirements in a cost-effective fashion.

The following new features are included in XPS V8.50.

New application development features

ISTAR/Distributed Query Coordinator: XPS can start distributed transactions and queries from an XPS system that reference other XPS or IDS systems. Queries started on an XPS node can select (not update, delete) data at other nodes. This feature provides customers better access to their data in a multiple database environment and makes it easier for them to manage their data.

INT8/SERIAL8: An eight-byte integer and an eight-byte serial type datatype provide you with the ability to store larger values in your databases. The limit currently associated with the integer and serial datatypes is 2 to the 32 power. The new datatypes have limits of 2 to the 64 power. This improved functionality makes it easier for you to manage large systems.

MERGE (UPSERT): Customers often need to refresh the data in their databases. The data they add consists of either new data or updates to data already in the database. This feature allows customers in one step to present the data to the server and have the server decide if an update or insert is needed. This feature simplifies the management of the XPS system while improving performance.

New DBA features

Table-level Point in Time Restore: This feature allows you to more naturally recover backed up data. With this feature you can restore a table or set of tables without requiring a complete restore of your database. This finer granularity makes it easier for you to manage your systems and to recover from disk or system failures.

Scrubbed Tables: Often customers create a table in one database of an instance and then move it to the production database in the same instance. This ease-of-use feature allows the transfer without the need to unload and reload the data. This makes the transfer easier and less prone to mistakes and requires less disk space.

Immutable Session Variables: Parallel Data Query (PDQ) is a method used by the XPS server to assign query priority on a per-session basis. The Immutable Session Variable feature makes the management of an XPS server much simpler since individual users are not permitted to reset their PDQ priority or certain other session variables that could severely impact the running systems.

Current and Client Timezone: This feature allows you to set the time zone that the CURRENT and TODAY database functions will use for determining the current time and date.

ONSTAT Query Start Time: This feature enables "onstat -g ses" and "onstat -g sql" commands to show the time the server actually started working on a query and the amount of time a session has been working on queries throughout its life. The Query Start time will show two different values: (1) Submit Start time — the time when the client submitted the query, and (2) Execution Start time — the time when the query actually started executing after getting past the Resource Grant Manager (RGM) queue.

Mixed Restore: This feature provides you a quicker method to recover your production systems after a restore. You can restore the critical DB spaces used by your applications and get your applications back on line. Later you can restore your non-critical DB spaces. You may also use this feature to limit the size of a restore.

New ease of use features

DBAccess History: The DBAccess tool is enhanced by providing a mechanism for you to easily repeat commands. Much like the history capability in UNIX® shells, you can more easily modify and re-execute commands already run.

Roles Improvements: Roles provide you a way to designate a particular set of security settings for a group of persons who perform one type of work. Now you can define the role your users have when they connect to the database.

New performance features

Improved Fragmentation Elimination on Datetime Columns: Customers often fragment their data based on a datetime value. The XPS optimizer excels at eliminating the scanning of fragments where data that matches the query's predicates cannot reside. By eliminating these fragments from expensive scans, a query can run significantly faster.

Improved Optimization for Groupby with Expressions Using Implicit PDQ: Implicit PDQ refers to the ability of the server to designate appropriate PDQ priorities to queries. With this change, the XPS server correctly assigns PDQ priorities with queries that use the Groupby operation.

Indexes on Non-logging Tables: The scratch, raw, and static table types do not create a logical log record and indexes cannot be built against these tables. Customers who need the performance associated with these table types can now also use them when indexes are needed.

OR Predicates Performance Improvement: OR predicates are typically unfit for any predicate derivation. However, this feature allows some predicates to be derived even with the existence of "OR" in the filter condition, provided that the columns used in the filter are also equi-joined.

OnBAR Thread Safe Library Support: Storage manager (SM) vendors are starting to build their SM-shared libraries with thread library support. Although OnBAR currently does not support SM's thread safe libraries, this feature allows OnBAR to work with thread safe and non-thread safe flavors of XBSA shared library on specific platforms.

Read-only Dbspaces: This feature allows you to specify a dbspace as "read only," thus allowing simpler and faster backups as well as faster warm restores. A read-only database allows any table type, but you cannot delete or update a table in that dbspace. The XPS server does not backup these dbspaces (more than once) and can ignore the logical log recovery phase during warm restore, thereby providing you with better performance and enhanced ease of use.

IBM Informix Connect Runtime V2.81: IBM Informix Connect Runtime V2.81 contains the runtime libraries for the Client Software Development Kit (CSDK) V2.81. CSDK is a collection of APIs that can speed development time for applications that work with IBM Informix Dynamic Server and IBM Informix XPS.

Using Informix CSDK, developers can write applications in the language they prefer, whether it is Java, C++, C, ESQL, or any application tools with ODBC and/or OLEDB access. This flexibility allows for more choice in programming environments, promotes easier and faster application development, and reduces the cost of training developers in new skills. With Informix CSDK, developers can also build one application to access multiple IBM Informix databases, saving maintenance and support expenses, minimizing downtime, and further speeding application development. The Informix CSDK APIs are optimized for accessing Informix databases.

Informix Connect Runtime V2.81 can be used to deploy applications built with the following CSDK V2.81 components:

  • IBM Informix ESQL/C 9.53
  • IBM Informix ODBC Driver 3.82
  • IBM Informix OLEDB Provider 2.81 (Win32 only)

IBM Informix Server Administrator (ISA) V1.50: IBM ISA is a Web-based administration tool for both IBM IDS and XPS that enables administrators to view the current status of the engine and make adjustments to different areas of the server from any Web browser without the need to install additional client software on the machine.

A key benefit of ISA V1.50 is that customers can use it to significantly enhance productivity of existing and new database administrators. All functions are grouped as tasks that allow easy navigation for performing maintenance commands, or even include their own administrative scripts in the environment. ISA is a full solution, including the Apache Web server to make the installation and maintenance as easy as possible.

Another key benefit of ISA V1.50 is that it can be used to manage the following servers:

  • IDS V7.31, V9.30, and V9.40
  • XPS V8.31, V8.32, V8.40, and V8.50
  • I-Spy

IBM Informix I-Spy V2.0: IBM Informix I-Spy is a smart data warehouse monitoring and optimization tool designed for IBM Informix databases. I-Spy helps warehouse administrators and architects increase the business value of enterprise data warehouses through enhanced utilization efficiency, design improvements, and lower maintenance costs.

I-Spy sits transparently between the database and the client, helping the administrator monitor and adjust database resources and client query usage, including:

  • Viewing executed SQL
  • Viewing the accessed data
  • Obtaining reports on execution time
  • Determining quantity of data returned
  • Identifying inefficient or long-running queries

Warehouse architects can use the information collected by I-Spy to help refine their data warehouse data models. They can also analyze query plans to develop optimal indexing strategies and determine which fact and dimension tables are being used. I-Spy has "rules-based" commands that allow DBAs to place transparent constraints on client activity. This can help prevent excessive consumption of database resources by canceling or prohibiting inefficient queries.

Key benefits of I-Spy V2.0 include:

  • Maximize data warehouse investment by providing information on how the warehouse is being used
  • Improve the efficiency of data warehouse design by allowing the data warehouse architects and developers to prototype the required data and queries
  • Enable customers to be better prepared for data warehouse expansion over time
