Overview

IBM WebSphere® Application Server — Express has been updated to V5.1.1 and includes major enhancements designed to make Web development faster and developers more productive. This release supports new industry standards that simplify the development of rich Web user interfaces and business logic, as well as high productivity tools for business-oriented developers who are new to Java™. This release also adds platform support for PowerPC® Linux™.

IBM WebSphere Application Server — Express is a cost effective, affordable entry point to e-business, providing fast and productive development, deployment, and visual management of dynamic Web sites. It features a simplified Web application server, a development environment based on IBM WebSphere Studio, and wizards and samples that can help reduce complexity and deployment costs.

What's new

  • Build dynamic Web user interfaces with drag-and-drop development using standards-based JavaServer Faces (JSF) components1
  • Visually design and develop rich user interfaces using drag-and-drop reusable components and visual Page Designer
  • Build data-driven Web pages with drag and drop development and point-and-click database connectivity
  • Write business logic and build data-driven Web applications using 4GL skills and Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) procedural language
  • Build rich client user interfaces with performance and maintenance characteristics of thin clients using JSF extensions
  • Deploy your application on the newly supported Linux PowerPC platform for Red Hat AS/EL 3.0 and United Linux 1.0 operating systems

IBM provided a preview to this technology, in Beta form, in WebSphere Studio Site Developer V5.1.1 and WebSphere Application Server — Express, V5.1. IBM delivered JSF support in WebSphere Studio Site Developer V5.1.2. Now IBM is delivering JSF support in WebSphere Application Server — Express, V5.1.1 at planned availability, with the same level of support and service as defined by the license agreement.

Key prerequisites

Hardware requirements:

For Linux on PowerPC (iSeries™ and pSeries® platforms):

  • iSeries/pSeries models that support Linux (64-bit support only)
  • Minimum 550 MB free disk space for installation
  • Minimum 256 MB of physical memory; 512 MB recommended
  • CD-ROM drive

Software requirements:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS and ES 3.0 Update 1 (Linux Intel™)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 3.0 Update 1 (Linux Intel, iSeries/pSeries)
  • United Linux 1.0 (Linux Intel, iSeries/pSeries)

Support for WebSphere® Application Server — Express, V5.1.1 running on Red Hat 7.x and 8.x, will continue as long as Red Hat supports these operating systems. After Red Hat ends support for Red Hat 7.x and 8.x, IBM will continue to support the product running on Red Hat 7.x and 8.x, but will not provide support for defects that are specific to Red Hat 7.x and 8.x. Enterprise Generation Language (EGL)

EGL is a high-level procedural language (familiar to VisualBasic, PowerBuilder, COBOL, RPG, Informix™ 4GL developers) that allows developers with these skills to build Java™ applications without having to know Java or object oriented programming concepts.

EGL provides the following:

  • EGL code generates Java
  • Debugger for EGL source
  • JSF UI component actions can be coded in EGL
