New Function in PSSP V3.5

Hardware: Support is added for the following hardware:

  • After PSSP V3.4 became available, pSeries servers were introduced. They are high-end 4-, 8-, 16-, or 32-way Gb processor POWER4™ servers. The physical components can be assigned to separate logical partitions (LPARs) within one physical server. You can have up to sixteen LPARs. Each LPAR functions as an individual node within that frame and each is fully functional as a PSSP node in a Cluster 1600 or SP system. With PSSP V3.5, these nodes require AIX 5L V5.1. pSeries servers are supported in an SP-attached configuration with the SP Switch2, the SP Switch, or no switch, or in a clustered server configuration.
  • The IBM 375/450 MHz POWER3™ SMP Thin Node and Wide nodes have been available with 375 MHz processors in an SP frame. Now you can have these thin and wide nodes with 450 MHz processors.
  • Additional node attachment and switch attachment adapters.

  • With the control workstation running PSSP V3.4 (or later) software, you have optional switch connectivity. This means you can use the SP Switch2 with newer nodes and still keep older nodes in your system. Any node not supported on the SP Switch2 can remain in the system, but not connected to the SP Switch2.
  • For both the SP Switch and SP Switch2, you can specify which nodes you want to exclude from serving as a switch primary or primary backup, and which nodes are available for that purpose.

SP-Attached Servers

  • SP system partitioning is supported by default in switchless systems with at least one SP node frame. For each SP node frame in the system, there are 16 available switch port numbers. Each SP node and each SP-attached server logical node in the system must be assigned a switch port number. The number of SP-attached servers that can be added to the system is limited by the number of available switch port numbers.

If SP system partitioning is not required in a switchless system, a new option has been added to PSSP to force the system to be "nonpartitionable". In this state, the number of SP-attached servers is not limited by the number of available switch port numbers. Switch port numbering rules can be ignored and sequential port numbers will automatically be assigned by the system.

PSSP Use of 64-Bit Kernel

  • PSSP V3.5 and the software stack it supports, including General Parallel File System (GPFS), Parallel Environment Message Passing Interface (MPI), Parallel Engineering Scientific Subroutine Language (Parallel ESSL), Low-Level Application Programming Interface (LAPI), Kernel Low-Level Application Programming Interface (KLAPI), and IBM Virtual Shared Disks, now provide support for use of 64-bit kernels. This support is essential for running applications with large real memory requirements. 64-bit kernel support only exists on those control workstations and nodes that meet the following minimal requirements running:
    • PSSP V3.5, or later
    • AIX 5L V5.1, or later service level
    • The 64-bit kernel on hardware that AIX supports use of the 64-bit kernel

File Collections: The supman user ID is used by PSSP when distributing file collections. Not managing a supman AIX user ID password is a security risk. PSSP V3.4 and later releases provide new commands to initially set and routinely change the supman password.

IBM Virtual Shared Disks: The IBM Virtual Shared Disk component of PSSP improves performance under extreme loads using IP, via flow control. With AIX trace hooks, you can better assess overall system problems.

Migration and Coexistence: With PSSP V3.5, AIX 5L V5.1 must be on the control workstation. Support is provided for migrating to PSSP V3.5 running on AIX 5L V5.1. If you have any pSeries servers in your system, AIX 5L V5.1 must be on each pSeries node along with the PSSP V3.5 or PSSP V3.4 software. PSSP V3.5 nodes can coexist with nodes that have PSSP V3.4 or PSSP V3.2.

Software Maintenance Information

Description: IBM Software Maintenance is a one-year or three-year contract offering that enables you to maintain software product version and release currency, with voice support during normal business hours included at no additional charge for the first year, for selected AIX(R) and UNIX(R)-based software products at a predetermined cost. One year of Software Maintenance is included in the price of the original license.

The following is general information regarding the Software Maintenance offering being announced:

  • Each eligible licensed software program will include one year of Software Maintenance (Software Subscription and Technical Support) in the price of the license.
  • A one- and three-year prepay option (represented by two separate type/models) associated with each eligible licensed program.
  • The Software Maintenance type/models will have the same pricing structure as the license type/models they are associated with.
  • Each one- and three-year Software Maintenance PID will have three sets of feature numbers for each priced entity:
    • A no-charge registration feature for the one-year contracts and a two-year priced feature (since the first year is included in the price of that license) for the three-year contracts
    • A renewal feature of one or three years
    • A Software Maintenance after license charge for customers who want to renew but have lapsed coverage
  • The Software Maintenance order generated for this product will be a new order and have a new starting/ending period, separate from the one for the license already in effect.

Definition of Software Upgrade: An upgrade is either a new version (3.x.x to 4.x.x) or a new release (x.3.x to x.4.x) of an IBM program announced as eligible for which you enrolled under the IBM Software Maintenance. Software Maintenance entitles you to future upgrades from only the latest announced version or release of an available eligible product.

Upgrades do not include programs sold separately from the enrolled program, but enhance the performance of that program, or are considered add-ons or utilities. Programs that perform the same functions as the enrolled program but are installed on a non-IBM pSeries platform are not considered upgrades.

Note: Software preventative-maintenance releases x.x.1 to x.x.2 (modification level changes, updates, or refreshes) are released under the one-year or three-year maintenance program numbers, but only when a supply feature has been announced. Supply features are announced only under the one-year and three-year options when there is an announced version/release change against the original program product. No-charge preventative-maintenance releases should be obtained by Software Maintenance customers in the same manner as non-Software Maintenance customers.

Example: Product A is offered under IBM Software Maintenance for pSeries and three months later PTFs are incorporated into the program package. This is considered an update that would not be obtained under the one-year or three-year maintenance program numbers under the IBM Software Maintenance offering. Using the same example above, three months after the PTFs were incorporated into the program package, IBM announces a new version of product A. At that time, a supply feature is announced for product A under the one-year and three-year maintenance program numbers. This allows customers who are entitled by purchase or when the first year of maintenance is included with the license, of either the one-year or three-year maintenance offering for product A to order the upgrade under the one-year or three-year offering.

IBM may announce a product that can be substituted for an enrolled product. This product is neither a new version, a new release, nor a preventive maintenance release of that enrolled product. In most cases, this product has a different architecture, more function, and a higher license charge than the enrolled product. IBM may provide those customers enrolled in the IBM Software Maintenance offering access to this product at a discounted rate. The terms of this transaction will be included in the new product announcement.

Note: IBM will not offer stand-alone upgrades as a standard product offering. Stand-alone upgrades to this product/release, and its future versions and releases, will be considered only on a special request basis by IBM.

Contract Duration: The IBM Software Maintenance contracts are on a product-by-product basis and are offered for one or three years. One year of Software Maintenance is included with the purchase of a new license for the product. The three-year prepay option covers two additional years of coverage since the first year is included in the product license. The three-year prepay option can be purchased at the same time a license for an eligible product is purchased. Refunds do not apply if cancellation occurs during one or three year contract period. Customers are not required to renew under either the one- or three-year offering when the contract expires but will need to use the maintenance after license option should they let the contract expire and want to acquire a new version or release of an eligible product. If the one- or three-year contracts aren't renewed, the one- or three-year contracts will be removed from IBM administrative systems. Contract transfer within an enterprise is allowed.

Payment Options: Customers enroll in the plan at a reduced "Initial" price at the same time a new license for an eligible program product is purchased. Customers can also enroll in the plan after purchase of a new license for an eligible program product is purchased but must purchase the maintenance after license option.

Software Maintenance Prices: The IBM Software Maintenance program prices are based on the published price of the software program at the time of the contract preparation.

Minimum Contract Value: None

Notification of Upgrade Availability and Ordering: Customers register for e-mail notifications when Software Maintenance products are upgraded. The Software Maintenance component of the Web server is:

Technical Information

Hardware Requirements

PSSP must be run on a Cluster 1600, or the equivalent cluster building blocks without the Cluster 1600 designation. These include:

  • A control workstation. Refer to RS/6000 SP: Planning, Volume 2, Control Workstation and Software Environment (GA22-7281), for the recommended hardware configuration.
  • An RS/6000 SP system.
  • One to 64 pSeries RS/6000 servers, depending on type.
  • If you have non-SP cluster servers, there are cabling requirements that you must also consider. Refer to IBM eServer Cluster 1600 Hardware Planning, Installation, and Service (GA22-7863) for more information.

Software Requirements

Minimum PSSP software requirements for your RS/6000 SP system or Cluster 1600 system:

  • AIX 5L V5.1 Base Operating System. AIX service is required at the 5100-03 Recommended Maintenance package (APAR IY32749 for service orders).
  • PSSP V3.5
  • At least one of the following:
    • C for AIX V6.0, or later
    • VisualAge® C++ Professional V6.0 for AIX, or later

  • PSSP must run on all partitions in a pSeries cluster.
  • PSSP V3.5 contains IBM VisualAge C++ Professional for AIX, V50 Runtime Modules (c) Copyright IBM Corporation 1989-2000. All Rights Reserved.

Compatibility: Because the SP system and PSSP use RS/6000 POWER4™, POWER3™, POWER2™, and PowerPC® architecture, and AIX 5L V5.1, 32-bit programs written for the RS/6000 will run on properly configured SP processor nodes without recompilation. In some cases, improved performance can be achieved by recompiling with the latest versions of the IBM XL FORTRAN compilers to further exploit the POWER2, POWER3, POWER4, and PowerPC technology. 64-bit applications that had run on AIX V4.3.3 will need to be recompiled.

PSSP V3.5 is a functional enhancement of PSSP V3.4. The end of service for PSSP V3.4 remains December 31, 2003.

When running with PSSP V3.5, the following products must be at the levels specified:

  • LoadLeveler® (5765-E69) V3R1 with service APAR:IY33664, for AIX 64 bit kernel support
  • Parallel Environment for AIX V3R2 (5765-D93)
  • ESSL for AIX V3R3 (5765-C42)
  • Parallel ESSL for AIX V2R3 (5765-C41)
  • General Parallel File System (5765-F64) V2R1
  • HACMP V4R5, or later, service levels (5765-E54)
  • DCE V3.1, or later, service levels

Refer to IBM RS/6000 SP: Planning, Volume 2, Control Workstation and Software Environment (GA22-7281) for a matrix of supported combinations of SP licensed programs for compatibility statements on nodes running on different levels of AIX operating system and PSSP.

The SP control workstation cannot be configured to use HACWS if SP distributed services are configured to exploit DCE security services.

  • PSSP V3.5 supports limited Internet Protocol (IP), V6 networks on the control workstation and the nodes. For details refer to PSSP Administration Guide , Appendix G (SA22-7348).
  • An SP system does not support C2 evaluation.
  • The firewalled RS/6000 SP system has restrictions. These restrictions/limitations are documented by the firewalled SP system manual. Refer to Implementing a Firewalled RS/6000 SP System (GA22-7874).
  • The HACWS function does not support DCE.
  • An SP system with more than one control workstation requires special procedures to maintain hardware control for control workstation fail-over. For details contact your IBM representative.
  • The IBM Virtual Shared Disk (VSD) function of PSSP V3.5 requires the use of a switch (SP Switch or SP Switch2).
  • VSD does not support the use of the KLAPI protocol on POWER4 servers attached to the SP Switch.
  • HACWS is not supported on non-SP nodes in the cluster.
  • Network Information Service (NIS+).

While no dependencies or adverse interactions between PSSP and NIS+ have been identified, the use of NIS+ on the SP system has not been tested.

  • LDAP Directory Integration Support.

While no dependencies or adverse interactions between PSSP and LDAP have been identified, the use of LDAP on the SP system has not been tested.

  • The PSSP Perspectives function requires 24-bit graphics support on the eServer to which it is displayed. If displaying Perspectives on the control workstation display then adapter GXT-135P or later, which supports both 24- and 8-bit, is acceptable.

Security, Auditability, and Control

PSSP V3.5 uses the security and auditability features of the AIX 5L V5 operating system.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Ordering Information

PSSP V3.5 has one charge unit — installs.

PSSP is available in variable order quantities, and is ordered based on the number of nodes/servers in your SP system, Cluster 1600, or cluster that will be running PSSP.

New users of PSSP V3.5 should specify program number 5765-D51, and the feature number equal to the total number of desired licenses to be installed times the quantity of authorizations. For example, if ordering PSSP for 12 servers in server group F5, order the feature number for the server group purchased (F5) with a quantity of 12.

If a customer orders additional licenses then the server group feature number for the number of additional authorizations should be used. For example, if ordering 32 additional PSSP V3.5 licenses in the example above, multiply the additional PSSP authorizations for server group F5 you purchased.
