Description

As the technology of the Internet has proliferated, more and more businesses are turning to service providers to "rent" information technology applications on a usage basis. Under this business model, service providers own and maintain the hardware, software, and networking technologies and rent software solutions to their customers.

Businesses lacking the expertise, financial resources, or strategic interest in running data-centers are finding this approach to be powerful and cost effective. By simply accessing their applications via an Internet browser, businesses are freed from the challenges and costs associated with maintaining applications themselves. The benefits of potential growth allow the service provider to offer greater capacity, availability, and functionality at a lower price-point than a single business can typically achieve on its own.

The WebSphere Commerce Suite, Service Provider Edition, V3.2 is a packaged solution enabling application service providers and other service providers to create and operate a fully-branded, customized, hosted e-commerce rental service for small and medium businesses. It provides a cost-effective, low-maintenance way for service providers to provide complete e-commerce solutions for multiple sellers.

  • Packaged functionality specifically for service operations include:
    • Seller management interface
    • Store open/close/lock — close and lock stores of sellers whose content is inappropriate or who have not paid their bills
    • Broadcast e-mail to sellers
    • Reporting
    • Configurable tracking of billable events
    • System event/error notification
    • Customer profiles
    • Online help for the Service Provider

Sellers: For the seller, the Service Provider Edition's Snap-On Commerce, Basic and Advanced stores provide a powerful, yet easy to use, set of browser-based tools that allow the non-technical person to:

  • "Rent" a store
  • Create basic Web pages
  • Build a catalog
  • Configure payments
  • Process orders
  • Run reports

These packaged levels of service are included to allow the Service Provider to quickly go to market with a set of solutions that represents a broad range of e-commerce solutions seen on the Internet today.

Service Providers can add additional levels of service or customize the Basic and Advanced stores to meet the specific needs of their target market. For example, one approach is to create Bronze, Silver, and Gold Advanced stores where a Bronze store offers a catalog that contains up to 50 products; Silver, 500 products; and Gold, an unlimited number of products.

Service Provider Edition Stores: There are three types of stores:

  • Basic Store
  • Advanced Store
  • Snap-On Commerce Store

Basic Store: This entry level e-commerce solution has a particular focus on simplicity and ease of use. Sellers are guided through every aspect of the store creation process by the Step-by-Step Store Creation Wizard. At completion, the seller has a fully operational e-commerce store with a populated catalog — all ready to go. Basic sellers will have no problem getting up and running. Once operational, the service provider can up-sell these customers to higher levels of service.

  • Store Creation
    • Step-by-Step Store Creation Wizard
    • Multiple store theme and layout templates
    • Home page and about-us page
    • Rich contextual online help
    • Entry level catalog editor
  • Store Operations — Shopper customer service interface
  • Store Reporting — At-a-glance site report
  • Order Management
    • Order Management tool
    • Automatic e-mail order notification
    • E-mail order confirmation and order status changes to customers
  • Payment Processing
    • Off-line payments
    • Real-time payments
  • Tax and Shipping Calculations — Simple tax and shipping

Advanced Store: Offers increased levels of e-commerce functionality while retaining the easy-to-use browser-based tooling that allows sellers to build and maintain their stores with little or no help from their service provider. Using the Snap-On Commerce function to place commerce enabled product pages, buy buttons, e-mails, and graphics all over the Internet, sellers can begin to leverage the power of the Internet as a networked medium to drive sales through their Web site.

Advanced sellers have unlimited sized catalogs with many departments and categories. For some sellers, the Order Management Tool is powerful enough to function as the central order processing application for their entire business. For example, for telephone or walk-in customers, sellers open a Web browser while speaking with their customer:

  • Create a new customer profile
  • Initiate an order for that customer
  • Track the order through its life cycle
  • Process the credit card transaction

Telephone or walk-in customers may never see their Internet site, yet the Advanced store provides significant value to the seller.

Features include:

  • Store Creation
    • Step-by-Step Store Creation Wizard
    • Multiple store theme and layout templates
    • Customized themes
    • HTML page creation tool — create as many static pages as you like
    • Support for professionally designed HTML pages — contract with a Web designer or build them yourself for the look and feel that you desire
    • Rich contextual online help — you'll always know what to do
    • Powerful Catalog Editor to manage an unlimited number of products, departments, and product categories
  • Store Operations
    • Shopper customer service interface — register, address book, reset password and check order status
    • Broadcast e-mail to customers

Payments Management with Payment Server/Manager: Provides the Payment Server/Manager the infrastructure to safely and securely receive and process payments on the Internet for sellers hosted by the Service Provider Edition. When licensed to its full capability, the Payment Server/Manager gives the service provider a complete solution for operating as a Payment Service Provider (PSP). A PSP extends valued payment services to the hosted merchant by providing connectivity to the merchant's bank to process and deposit customer payments quickly and effectively. Additionally the PSP empowers each of their hosted merchants to independently review all past customer transactions in real-time, as well as view all historical batch settlements they have had with their banks. This now positions a PSP for new services and revenue opportunities, including revenue for every payment transaction. The Payment Server/Manager supports the following business services.

  • Host a payment service for multiple remote merchants
  • Uncompromised security and integrity for critical business payments data
  • Integrate payments into business processes and software such as online catalogs and accounting packages
  • Add real-time payments processing capabilities to any e-commerce software or Internet site
  • Manage credit card, debit card, stored value smart cards, and future emerging Internet payment methods

Payment Server/Manager advantages:

  • Connectivity to IBM and IBM-compatible gateways, enabling connectivity to merchant banks worldwide using industry-standard payment protocol
  • CyberCash connectivity available for U.S. and Canada

The price of WebSphere Commerce Suite, Service Provider Edition is based on the number of processors and the number of merchants in the system or node executing all or any part of the Service Provider Edition program. Each program package includes one processor entitlement and no merchant entitlements. Processor entitlements include no merchant entitlements.

A merchant is an independent store implemented as an instance of Service Provider Edition with a unique URL and separate database, or as a store within an electronic mall sharing a URL and database with other merchants. A different language version of the same store is an additional merchant site. Program licensing requires the licensee to purchase a merchant entitlement (Base or Advanced) for each five merchants on the system or node executing Service Provider Edition.

Program licensing requires the licensee to obtain a processor entitlement for each processor on the system or node executing Service Provider Edition.

In the case of a Symmetric Multiprocessor (SMP) system or node, the customer must acquire processor entitlements that bring the total number of processor charges equal to the total number of processors executing all or any part of the Service Provider Edition program.
