Description

The IBM System Storage N5600 gateways consist of the Model G10 or Model G20, and associated software. Both N5600 gateway models require an existing external storage infrastructure that can be heterogeneous. EXN expansion units may not be attached to the N5600 gateways.

The Model G10 is designed to provide a single-node gateway with iSCSI support, and NFS, CIFS, and FCP support via optional features. The N5600 is a 3U gateway that must be mounted in a standard 19-inch rack. The N5600 gateway does not include storage in the base chassis. The base chassis includes redundant, hot-plug power supplies, redundant cooling fans, four integrated 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports, and four integrated 4-Gb FC ports that can be configured as targets or initiators. The N5600 Model G10 supports a maximum of 504 LUNs, 8 GB DDR-400 ECC memory, and four FC ports (ten with the addition of expansion HBA features). The N5600 Model G10 is capable of being upgraded to an N5600 Model G20.

The Model G20 is designed to provide identical function as the N5600 Model G10, but with the addition of the Clustered Failover (CFO) function. The N5600 Model G20 consists of two active/active processing nodes that are designed to provide a high-availability environment, helping improve overall reliability. The N5600 Model G20 also supports a maximum of 504 LUNs, 16 GB of DDR-400 ECC memory, and eight FC ports (20 with the addition of expansion HBA features).

The N5600 gateways are designed to interoperate with products capable of data transmission in the industry-standard iSCSI, CIFS, FCP, and NFS protocols. These include, but are not limited to, the IBM System p™, IBM System i™ (NFS only), IBM System x™, and IBM System z™ (NFS only) servers, and a select number of FC-attached storage subsystems. Details and current information about N5600 gateway interoperability are available in the IBM System Storage N series Interoperability Matrix at

Operations Manager Core (OMC)

The OMC features are designed to provide a central point of control and to provide alerts, reports, and configuration tools. These tools are designed to help manage storage and content delivery infrastructure, consistent with business requirements, and help maximize availability and reduce total cost of ownership.

OMC provides a license that allows the use of the OMC features on the N series machine for which they are ordered. This machine is the "managing" machine; those to be managed are the "managed" machines. All OMC features must be ordered for only the managing machine. One tier license feature must be ordered for each node to be managed, including the nodes of the managing machine.

A Model G10 consists of one node; a Model G20 consists of two nodes. On the initial order, the number (quantity) of the tier features ordered defines the number of managed nodes, and the N series machine types and models, for which the feature is authorized. That number may be increased via a subsequent (MES) order by ordering the incremental number of OMC tier x license features (#826x). The MES order must be for the managing machine. For example, if the number of nodes to be managed is to be increased by ten, the number of #826x features, which must be ordered in the MES order, is ten. Any combination of #826x features may be included in the same MES order.

It is necessary to select the appropriate tier for each N series machine you will be managing with the OMC license. Multiple N series machines are managed with one OMC license, but the support for multiple machines must be reflected in the tiers that are ordered. The relationship of N series machines to tiers, and associated feature numbers, is as follows:

          Machine Operations Manager feature
N series type Model Number Name

N3700 2863 A10 8262 Ops Mgr Core tier 2 license
A20 8262 Ops Mgr Core tier 2 license

N5200 2864 A10 8263 Ops Mgr Core tier 3 license
A20 8263 Ops Mgr Core tier 3 license
G10 8263 Ops Mgr Core tier 3 license
G20 8263 Ops Mgr Core tier 3 license

A20 8264 Ops Mgr Core tier 4 license
G10 8265 Ops Mgr Core tier 5 license
G20 8264 Ops Mgr Core tier 4 license

N5600 2868 A10 8266 Ops Mgr Core tier 6 license
A20 8265 Ops Mgr Core tier 5 license
G10 8266 Ops Mgr Core tier 6 license
G20 8265 Ops Mgr Core tier 5 license

N7600 2866 A10 8266 Ops Mgr Core tier 6 license
A20 8266 Ops Mgr Core tier 6 license
G10 8266 Ops Mgr Core tier 6 license
G20 8266 Ops Mgr Core tier 6 license

G10 8267 Ops Mgr Core tier 7 license
G20 8267 Ops Mgr Core tier 7 license

For example, to use OMC to manage one N3700 Model A20, five N5200 Model  A10s, and two N7800 Model G20s, you would order two of #8262, five of #8263, and four of #8267.

The initial order of these features provides a key that allows OMC support of the number of nodes specified. When the number of nodes is increased by a subsequent order, a new key is assigned allowing use of OMC for the new total number of nodes. The old key is rendered obsolete.

Note: The OMC requires only one of feature #8258, regardless of the number of nodes to be managed.

Operation Mgr Bus Continue (#8256): This feature provides advanced function for Operations Manager. It is designed to help minimize downtime by notifying you that customized preset thresholds and conditions have exceeded operational limits.

Miscellaneous hardware features

Rack installation

Either feature number 9201 or 9202, but not both, must be included in the order for N5600 Model G10 or G20.

Plant install in 2101 rack (#9201): This feature specifies that the N5600 will be installed in an IBM System Storage 2101 Model N00 System Rack, by IBM manufacturing, prior to shipment. When selecting this feature, a 2101 Model N00 rack order must be tied to the N5600 order using the multisystem order function.

Field install rack mount kit (#9202): This feature specifies that the N5200 is to be installed in the field in a customer-provided rack. Rack mounting hardware is included.

IGF Transaction Indicator (#9556): This specify feature is used to designate that a new N5600 Model G10 or Model G20 is involved in an IBM Global Financing transaction (lease or financing). It is for administrative purposes only.

For a new N5600 order that includes #77xx or #6xxx licensed function features (excluding feature #6000 or #6150), the IGF Transaction Indicator feature must be ordered as a Record Purposes Only (RPO) MES to the N5600. This feature is field-install only and cannot be included on the initial N5600 order.

This feature should not be used for any other #7700 or #6xxx licensed function transactions. It is not required when adding additional #77xx or #6xxx licensed functions to an installed N5600.

Configuration specify feature

Num. of FC Target Ports (#9557): This no-charge feature specifies the number of onboard FC ports that are to be configured as FCP target ports. Target ports added via feature number 1017 must not be included in this number. FCP target ports are used for FC attachment of the N5600 to application servers (containing FC HBAs) or to FC storage area networks.

Note: All FC target ports must be either onboard FC ports or FC HBA ports (#1017). They may not be used in combination.

This feature is only relevant if you intend to use the Fibre Channel Protocol feature on the N5600. For a Model G10, valid choices are 0, 2, and 4. For a Model G20, valid choices are 0, 2, 4, and 8.
