Overview |
The IBM MQ Appliance provides IBM MQ V8 function delivered in an appliance to connect applications, systems, and services with reliability and security using enterprise messaging. IBM MQ has provided thousands of businesses with mission-critical messaging for more than 20 years. The IBM MQ Appliance provides a customized version of IBM MQ V8 to allow the IBM enterprise messaging solution, which is delivered as a hardware appliance, and offers fast time to value and simpler administration.
The IBM MQ Appliance is customized to provide the optimal messaging solution in appliance hardware. Performance and message throughput are tuned to take advantage of the appliance capability and configuration. A new, high availability configuration is now possible with a pair of appliances that mirror messages and enable seamless takeover upon failure of the primary appliance.
IBM MQ Appliance includes a new user tooling interface, the IBM MQ Console. This browser-based tool, personalised and customized for each user, offers configuration and monitoring for the IBM MQ Appliance. MQ Console works in conjunction with the existing tooling interfaces of the MQ Explorer and MQ Script Commands (MQSC).
A queue manager that runs in the IBM MQ Appliance acts the same as other queue managers in a MQ environment. MQ queue managers, whether in appliances or deployed as software, can participate in clusters and exchange messages with other MQ queue managers or MQ clients. Businesses now have an additional deployment option with MQ appliances that runs alongside traditional, software-based MQ deployments.
To aid security, simplicity, and maintenance, MQ appliances are locked. No additional software can to be installed, such as user applications and user exits, and no user files can be stored. The IBM MQ Appliance is used as a messaging hub, with applications that connect to the MQ Appliance as MQ Clients or through other MQ queue managers.
Included in the IBM MQ Appliance is the MQ Advanced Message Security function. This function allows end-to-end encryption of message contents at rest, based on pre-defined policies. This ensures that businesses who need to encrypt message contents can include MQ appliances in their environments, and be assured that messages stored in the IBM MQ Appliance are encrypted and their contents are protected.
The IBM MQ Appliance can also be used as the coordination queue manager in an MQ Managed File Transfer deployment. MQ Managed File Transfer functions enable users to move data held in files as MQ Messages providing file-to-file transfer, file-to-message transfer, and message-to-file transfer. The IBM MQ Appliance participates as either a coordination queue manager or as a queue manager moving MQ messages that contain file data.

Description |
The IBM MQ Appliance provides IBM MQ V8 capabilities that are delivered in an appliance. This delivers a new way to deploy and consume IBM MQ messaging capabilities, and can run alongside existing MQ queue managers and MQ Clients, as part of a connected enterprise, or the IBM MQ Appliance, can be used with MQ Clients as the only MQ queue manager in an enterprise.
Included in the IBM MQ Appliance is the MQ Advanced Message Security function, which allows for end-to-end encryption of message contents at rest, based on pre-defined policies. This ensures that businesses that need to encrypt message contents can include IBM MQ Appliances in their environments. They can be assured that messages stored in the IBM MQ Appliances are encrypted and their contents are protected. This function is a part of every IBM MQ Appliance.
The IBM MQ Appliance can also be used as the coordination queue manager in an MQ Managed File Transfer deployment. MQ Managed File Transfer functions enable users to move data held in files as MQ messages to provide file-to-file transfer, file-to-message transfer, and message-to-file transfer. No local user files are stored on the IBM MQ Appliance. The IBM MQ Appliance participates as either a coordination queue manager or as a queue manager to move MQ messages that contain file-data.
As an appliance, this product offers businesses rapid deployment of enterprise messaging and easier administration, both in day-to-day operations and in maintenance. In addition, there are some functional differences and optimizations as compared to IBM MQ that is delivered as a software package. Some benefits come due to the appliance form-factor itself, and others come from enhancements and optimizations from updates to the MQ code that is tailored and tuned for appliance operation and deployment. The IBM MQ Appliance can fully participate as a MQ queue manager in connecting to MQ clients and other MQ queue managers and MQ clusters.
IBM MQ functions on the appliance
The IBM MQ Appliance includes an adapted version of IBM MQ V8. This level of IBM MQ contains additional functions that are available in the IBM MQ Appliance and in the latest level of IBM MQ V8.
IBM MQ V8 provides new function that enables userid authentication to make use of an LDAP repository. In IBM MQ appliances, this userID authentication is extended with group memberships and authorization of access.
The MQ queue managers, which are defined and deployed in IBM MQ appliances, act and work alongside MQ queue managers the same as any other IBM MQ V8 deployed queue managers. Either a single queue manager or multiple queue managers can be defined on the IBM MQ Appliance. The number of queue managers depends on your requirements and the workload of the applications that use the queue managers. A performance and workload guide is available to help plan messaging workload on the appliance.
High availability through appliance pairs
One of the key differences between IBM MQ that is deployed as software and the IBM MQ Appliance is the new approach for high availability. IBM MQ appliances can be configured as pairs for high availability. Each appliance has on-board disk and memory. Configuring IBM MQ appliances in high availability pairs and configuring each queue manager to use this pairing enables the messages that flow through the queue managers to be mirrored to the paired appliance. In the event of a queue manager failure in one IBM MQ Appliance, a queue manager will start on the paired appliance with full access to the mirrored messages that are stored on the paired appliance with queue manager failure. The IBM MQ Appliance is designed for takeover and continuation of the workload to restore operations rapidly.
Two versions of the IBM MQ Appliance
The IBM MQ Appliance is a versatile and flexible offering that is designed to enable IBM MQ to be deployed for new use cases, or to simplify existing deployment options. One or more queue managers can be defined and deployed on each appliance. The overall capacity for MQ workload through the appliance is determined by the processing capacity of the IBM MQ Appliance. Two models are available:
- The IBM MQ Appliance M2000A is available for larger enterprise workloads.
- The IBM MQ Appliance M2000B is designed to meet the needs for smaller workloads and offers a lower processing capability, at a lower price.
Either version of the appliance can be deployed anywhere that MQ queue manager functionality is required, whether in an enterprise data center, in a branch office, or in a factory.
An additional capacity option for the IBM MQ Appliance M2000B is available to provide IBM MQ Appliance M2000A performance.
IBM MQ Console
The IBM MQ Console for configuring and managing the MQ environment is delivered with the IBM MQ Appliance. IBM MQ Console can be used in place of, or alongside, the existing IBM MQ Explorer tooling or MQ Script Commands (MQSC). IBM MQ Console is a customizable web UI that enables users to configure and monitor IBM MQ without needing to install an executable program such as MQ Explorer. Access to controls and information is limited to the appliance to which the user connects the IBM MQ Console. This capability delivers powerful and flexible tooling for users of the IBM MQ Appliance.
Administering the IBM MQ Appliance
Definition and administration of the MQ capabilities are performed using IBM MQ interfaces. The IBM MQ Appliance is designed to be familiar to existing MQ administrators as well as being accessible to new users. The IBM MQ Console provides remote administration of the appliance. Configuration of IBM MQ Appliance queue managers and resources can quickly be created by copying existing MQ queue managers or by use of MQSC scripts. The IBM MQ Console provides your administrator guidance regarding unused appliance capacity and can tailor a custom dashboard to show a view of key resources.

Statement of good security practices |
IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
