Overview
Bottom rule

Enhancements for Power Systems include Power S814 IBM i Editions, Power S824 expanded memory, and several new configuration flexibility options.

IBM i clients acquiring a new 4-core or 6-core Power S814 server can choose to use an IBM i Express Edition. Two new editions are similar to the editions provided with POWER7+™ 720 servers and offer specific licensing advantages that further improve the price/performance of the Power S814 server. Feature EU2C can be included with a new 4-core Power S814 server, and feature EU2D can be included with a new 6-core Power S814 server.

The memory maximum of the Power S824 server is doubled with the addition of a 128 GB DDR3 1.6 GHz memory DIMM (#EM8E). Like the existing 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB memory DIMMs, feature EM8E incorporates L4 cache on the custom DIMM for higher performance and also incorporates strong availability capabilities. Using 16 of these memory features provides 2 TB of memory capacity.

To make it easier to configure a solution server, the following features will be inserted in the configuration on Power System S812L and S822L servers:

  • Indicate features for the Standard Edition for General Parallel File System (#EGT1)
  • Advanced indicator for General Parallel File System (#EGT2)
  • IBM Platform Cluster Manager - Advanced Edition for Power (#EGT3)

Clients booting from a disk or solid-state drive (SSD) that is not on a storage area network (SAN) have a new specify option when ordering their Power E870 or E880 server to better reflect their configuration on IBM configuration tools. Clients can now specify they will be using an existing EXP24S I/O drawer (#5887) for their Power E870 or E880 boot drive using specify feature ELS0. This enables a client upgrading with the same serial number or migrating to a new serial number system to avoid buying an additional EXP24S.

These new rack specify features allow clients to more effectively specify how IBM Manufacturing should configure their new 7014-T42 racks:

  • Specify feature ER1B leaves 1U rack space open at the bottom of the rack
  • Specify feature ER1T leaves 1U rack space open at the top of the rack
  • Specify feature ER1F helps IBM Manufacturing place an IBM FlashSystem™ drawer in the server

IBM i Express Editions

Express Editions feature a lower price than if you ordered them "a la carte" or build-to-order. The Express Editions are available only during the initial Power S814 system order and cannot be ordered after your system is shipped.

The IBM configurator offers these easy-to-order Express Editions that include lower cost licensing options. You can modify the configurations to match your exact requirements for your initial shipment -- increasing or decreasing the configuration. If you create a configuration that falls below any of the defined minimums, the IBM configurator replaces the no-charge features with equivalent function regular charge features.

IBM i 4-core Express Editions (#EU2C):

To use the no-charge features on your initial order, you must order:

  • 4-core Power S814 server.
  • IBM i Primary Operating System Indicator (#2145), or indicate VIOS as the Primary Operating System (#2146 and #9441 and #9447).
  • 16 GB minimum memory.
  • Minimum of two HDD, two SSD, two Fibre Channel adapters, or two FCoE adapters. You only need to meet one of these disk/SSD/FC/FCoE criteria. Partial criteria cannot be combined.

If the above requirements are met, the following are included:

  • Five IBM i user entitlements (no-charge)
  • One IBM i Access Family license with unlimited users (5770-XW1 or 5761-XW1)
  • Reduced price on 5733-SOA and 5770-WDS or 5761-WDS

6-core Power S814 Express Editions (EU2D):

To use the no-charge features on your initial order of 6-core Power S814 Express Editions (#EU2D), you must order:

  • 6-core Power S814 server (not offered on the 8-core S814 server).

  • Thirty IBM i user entitlements (charged)
  • One IBM i Access Family license with unlimited users (57xx-XW1)
  • Reduced price on 57xx-WDS and 5733-SOA

Power S824 Expanded Memory

IBM Power System S824 (8286-42A) server clients can take advantage of greater memory capacity of up to 2 TB by ordering up to sixteen 128 GB DDR3 Memory features (#EM8E).

The 128 GB DIMMs can only be ordered with the initial Power S824 system order. Mixing 128 GB DIMMs with other size DIMMs on the same S824 system order is not supported. Only a quantity of eight (1 TB) or a quantity of sixteen (2 TB) 128 GB DIMMs is announced. Other configuration quantity options are not announced.

Clients that previously ordered RPQ 8A2232 for 128 GB DDR3 memory can now initiate a record purpose only (RPO) change, removing RPQ8A2232 and replacing it with feature EM8E in the same quantity for their AAS/WTAAS machine-level records after December 9, 2014. Updating the records will make tracking the configuration easier over time.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
