Abstract

The IBM Report Management and Distribution System (RMDS) helps OS/390 and MVS customers reduce the problems and costs of printing, storing, and distributing large quantities of data.

RMDS maintains a library of reports, and its powerful facilities enable you to view and work with these reports online instead of spending valuable time retrieving hardcopy printouts or microfiche. RMDS helps you attain your business objectives by:

  • Increasing the availability of report information
  • Reducing the need for computer operations support
  • Enhancing end-user productivity.

RMDS Version 2.3 adds:

  • Storage of AFP reports in VSAM linear datasets
  • Enhanced performance of access to reports stored in VSAM datasets
  • Online maintenance and administrative facility in ISPF
  • Improved data compression services
  • Elimination of DB2 Query Management Facility (QMF) as pre-requisite. (DB2 itself is still required to support RMDS.)

RMDS Version 2.2 added Advanced Function Printing(TM) (AFP(TM)) capabilities to the product. This AFP support includes:

  • AFP report storage, printing, transfer and distribution. These functions were formerly limited to line mode report data.

  • An enhanced AFP Conversion and Indexing Function (ACIF), which enables you to access AFP reports by index values as well as convert existing line mode data reports to AFP.

  • Improved navigation capabilities, which allow you quicker access to specific report segments.

Product positioning

RMDS provides a reliable, easy-to-use alternative to print and microfiche production. It is most useful to OS/390 and MVS customers with significant print and print distribution requirements.

RMDS can manage both AFP and line mode data streams. Enhancements to the use of VSAM in RMDS Version 2.3 provide customers with additional storage options. The online maintenance and administration tool contributes to ease of use.

Description

Why RMDS?

RMDS is an output management system for OS/390 and MVS. It maintains a library of reports which your organization can access without the need for print or microfiche storage. Some of the advantages of RMDS over hardcopy report management systems are as follows:

  • Faster delivery of report material at a lower cost than print or microfiche.

  • Line mode report viewing facilities available on CICS, IMS, TSO, and VTAM.

  • Report transfer facilities allow you to copy reports to a PC, VM, or MVS system.

  • Reports are stored in individual data sets or objects that allow storage management tools to place the report data on the most economical storage device.

  • Report data storage on DASD for immediate access. Reports stored in DASD datasets may be archived for long term storage to tape using DFSMS/HSM. Optical storage is also an option with the use of DFSMS/OAM.

  • Easy administration and maintenance of RMDS report libraries through the online administration tool.

  • Data compression services are improved with choice of internal RMDS compression, SMS or ESA/390 hardware data compression.

  • Print options allow you to print report pages or entire reports on network or system printers.

  • Security controls prevent unauthorized viewing of reports or report pages.

  • A report table of contents facility allows you to build indexes into a report.

  • Optional DFSMS management of all files.

AFP Support

RMDS Version 2.3 adds the capability to store AFP reports in VSAM linear DASD datasets as well as in Object Access Method (OAM) objects. This gives customers additional storage management options for AFP. Prior releases of RMDS Version 2 required the use of optical storage devices in order to store AFP data for long term storage.

RMDS uses the most current interface for VSAM access which enhances storage and retrieval performance of reports stored in DASD as well as retrieval performance from DFSMS/HSM (TM) archives.

RMDS includes an enhanced AFP Conversion and Indexing Facility (ACIF) which permits:

  • Access to AFP reports by index values
  • More specific or granular search for documents
  • Tailoring transferred, printed or distributed reports to individual recipients by using indexing which allows query and selection of related report segments.

Online Maintenance

Prior releases of RMDS Version 2 required the use of the DB2 Query Management Facility (QMF) for administration and maintenance activities. RMDS Version 2.3 now integrates maintenance and administrative activities through ISPF. (The PC application, Administrative Workbench/2, used with prior releases of RMDS Version 2 is also removed from the product.)

Improved Data Compression

RMDS Version 2.3 provides choices for data compression:

  • SMS managed QSAM and VSAM files may be SMS compressed.

  • Line mode data may be compressed using RMDS internal repeated blank suppression algorithm.

  • Line mode and AFP data may be compressed using ESA/390 Hardware Data Compression.

Planning information

Customer responsibilities

The customer should read the following documentation to prepare an installation plan:

  • GC66-0622 RMDS General Information
  • S544-5397 RMDS Installation and Planning Guide
  • S544-5395 RMDS Administrator's Reference

User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Performance considerations

Actual performance of the Report Management and Distribution System viewer may vary due to system size and load, available storage, DASD placement, and TSO, IMS , CICS and VTAM tuning. Data streams used for display of report data are blank compressed to minimize transmission time.

Conversions

A migration program is provided to convert RMDS Version 1.4 customers to Version 2.3.

RMDS Version 2 uses DB2 to store information about reports. The reports can now be stored in OAM format, as well as VSAM and QSAM files. A limited amount of DASD will be needed during the conversion and test process. Existing RMDS reports are unaffected by the conversion process. (Reports do not need to be recalled or copied to complete the conversion.)

Security, auditability, and control

This program uses the security and auditability features of RACF and DB2.

The security and auditability features of RMDS are:

  • Point of failure recovery for report information
  • Protection of reports from unauthorized access
  • Ability to prevent the display of report names to unauthorized individuals
  • Ability to protect access to reports at the page level
  • Ability to limit administrators access to the report library.
