Abstract

The IBM TotalStorage DS4000 Midrange Disk Systems are designed to offer a set of building blocks for Fibre Channel (FC)-based SANs, whether just starting or expanding an existing network. The DS4000 product family offers scalable storage in a wide range of capacities to support growing storage requirements. DS4000 storage is designed to be easy to install and manage using the DS4000 Storage Manager that is included with every DS4000 Midrange Disk system.

Model abstract 1722-60U

The IBM 1722 DS4300 Midrange Disk System Model 60U is built upon 2 Gbps Fibre Channel (FC) technology that can help bring highly available RAID-protected storage, with scalable capacity and increased connectivity, to a wide range of storage area network (SAN) applications. The DS4300 supports applications running on IBM eServer pSeries and xSeries servers as well as servers from Sun, HP, and other Intel-based providers. The base DS4300 comes with authorization for up to 14 internal disk drive modules, offering over 4 TB of physical storage capacity. Customers can order additional authorizations to attach up to three IBM System Storage EXP810/710, or up to three EXP710/700 Storage Expansion Units supporting up to over 18 TB of storage using Fibre Channel drives. The DS4300 with the Turbo feature comes with authorization to attach up to six EXP810/710 Expansion Units, or up to seven EXP710/EXP700 Expansion Units (up to 112 disk drives) supporting a total of over 33 TB of storage using Fibre Channel drives.

Alternatively, when no Fibre Channel disk drive modules are installed internally within the DS4300 enclosure, the DS4300 Model 60U supports attachment of up to eight EXP100 Storage Expansion Units, offering up to 44 TB of physical storage capacity using Serial ATA (SATA) disk drive modules. For increased flexibility and affordability, customers may purchase the optional FC/SATA Intermix feature (#7356) to attach a combination of EXP810/EXP710/EXP100 or EXP710/EXP700/EXP100 Expansion Units to their DS4300 and DS4300 with Turbo configurations.

DS4300 with Turbo can support configurations of up to over 52 TB of storage using EXP810s with 500 GB SATA drives in combination with 300 GB FC drives installed in the DS4300. See the Limitations Section for details.

The DS4300 is designed to offer a highly available, high-performance, entry-level storage solution supporting a number of industry standards and can scale in capacity and connectivity within a wide range of SAN environments. DS4300 storage resources are designed to be shared efficiently and scale rapidly to help address increased demands by users across a heterogeneous FC server environment.

TotalStorage DS4000 storage family

The IBM TotalStorage DS4000 family of storage products are designed to offer a set of building blocks for Fibre Channel (FC)-based SANs, whether just starting or expanding an existing network. The DS4000 product family offers scalable storage capacity ranging from 73 GB to over 112 TB of storage capacity to support growing storage requirements. DS4000 storage is designed to be easy to install and manage using the Storage Manager that is included with every DS4000 storage product. DS4000 products offer various controller models at different performance and price points to best address customer SAN needs.

Multiple DS4000 storage units can be centrally managed from a common DS4000 management console from virtually anywhere within an existing LAN infrastructure. Use DS4000 advanced copy service functions, such as FlashCopy, VolumeCopy, and Remote Mirror, to help address data protection and disaster recovery needs.

The 3U rack-mountable enclosure contains dual RAID controllers and multiple SAN connectivity options used in conjunction with up to six EXP810/710 Expansion Units or up to seven EXP710/700 Expansion Units (capability of DS4300 with Turbo feature) for a complete storage solution.

The DS4300 utilizes 2 Gbps Fibre Channel technology for connections to host servers or switched SAN fabrics, and optionally to additional disk drive enclosures. On the DS4300 host interface, there are two host ports per controller, each providing two 2 Gbps FC attachment to each of the RAID controllers. You can attach to a switched fabric or directly to host servers via FC host bus adapters using either short-wave small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical converters (#2210) for distances up to 300 meters, or long-wave SFP optical convertors (#2220) for distances up to 10 km (6.2 miles). The DS4300 supports and comes with authorization for up to 14 internal disk drive modules, supporting over 4 TB of storage capacity. Additional authorizations can be ordered for the DS4300 allowing supported attachment of up to three EXP810/710 Expansion Units Units or three EXP710/700 Expansion Units using optional EXP810/7xx Attachment authorization features for DS4300s without the Turbo feature.

DS4300s with the Turbo feature (#2000 or #2010) provide authorization for attachment of up to six EXP810/710 Expansion Units or up to seven EXP710/700 Expansion Units. This provides the capability for attachment of up to 112 FC disk drives with a capacity of up to over 33 TB. The DS4300 with Turbo feature in combination with the EXP810 Expansion Units, FC/SATA Intermix feature (#7356), and 500 GB SATA drive drive modules enables configurations up to over 52 TB.

The DS4300 with the Turbo feature offers increased performance, larger cache size, and greater scalability. The Turbo feature is available on newly ordered DS4300s (#2000) or as a field upgrade (#2010) to an existing DS4300. A DS4300 with the Turbo feature includes: 2 GB of cache, 1 GB per RAID controller; Storage Manager V8.4; and authorization for eight storage partitions (expandable to sixteen or sixty-four storage partitions), and attachment of up to six EXP810/710 Expansion Units or up to seven EXP710/700 Expansion Units.

The DS4300 includes licensed IBM Machine Code and support to attach to servers running Microsoft Windows operating systems. For attachment to pSeries/AIX, Sun/Solaris, HP/HP-UX, and other Intel-based operating system servers, the following optional features must be ordered to obtain the IBM Machine Code licenses and support necessary:

Also available is an Intel Pack (#7600) that combines support for Linux/Intel and Novell NetWare operating systems with an upgrade to four storage partitions, all as a single optional feature.

The Storage Manager V8.3, included with the DS4300 without the Turbo feature provides a GUI for configuring, monitoring, and managing one or more DS4000 storage units. DS4000 Storage Manager V8.3 includes authorization for a single host group with options (#8804, #8808, #8848, #8816, #8849) to increase the number of storage partitions up to four, eight, or sixteen, thereby enabling up to four, eight, or sixteen host servers or clusters of host servers. Each storage partition provides protected data access for only the assigned host servers to the DS4000 logical drives (or LUNs).

DS4000 Storage Manager V8.3 supports up to 32 logical drives per storage partition. With the sixteen storage partition option, the DS4300 supports up to 512 logical drives. The Storage Manager's dynamic array management capabilities supports non-disruptive expansion of logical drives, addition of additional disk drives to array groups, and changing of the RAID segment size or RAID level of an array group.

DS4000 Storage Manager V8.4 is included with the Turbo feature and provides authorization for eight storage partitions with options (#8849, #8850, #8864) to increase the number of storage partitions to sixteen, or sixty-four. Storage Manager V8.4 increases the number of logical drives per storage partition beyond the capability of V8.3 from 32 to 256 logical drives.

DS4300 Advanced Copy functions

FlashCopy provides an instantaneous point-in-time copy of a logical drive. The FlashCopy feature (#7351) provides the DS4300 FlashCopy activation. For DS4300 Model 60U without the Turbo feature, firmware level 05.34 or later is required. For DS4300 Model 60U with the Turbo feature, the appropriate firmware level is included.

VolumeCopy advanced copy feature is an option available for the DS4300. The VolumeCopy feature (#7353) provides a full copy of a FlashCopy logical drive. FlashCopy activation is a required prerequisite of the VolumeCopy feature. The FlashCopy and VolumeCopy options are both available in a single offering for the DS4300 by ordering (#7354).

Field integration of the DS4300 is customer setup, unless the DS4000 Installation Services are utilized. This feature will be automatically added to DS4300 orders using the ECFGSSG configurator.
