IBM contribution

Schooner contribution

The Schooner appliances are next-generation data access appliances purpose-built for information-intensive Web 2.0 and cloud computing datacenters. These fully integrated, application-specific appliances incorporate leading-edge technology to deliver breakthrough performance and cost effectiveness.

Note: Solid state drives mean that the unit doesn't include any moving parts as conventional hard drives do. As a result, flash SSDs are robust and potentially much more efficient. They're also capable of providing almost instant access to data, while hard drives have to spend time moving arms and spinning disks to access individual blocks.

Higher-level datacenter building blocks

By leveraging Schooner's fully integrated, higher-level datacenter building blocks, IT managers are no longer burdened with the complex and inefficient integration projects that ordinary servers require. Now they can take advantage of the advanced technology in Schooner appliances to quickly and easily manage data growth, decrease administrative complexity, and cut total cost of ownership (TCO).

The Schooner Appliance family

IBM currently offers two product families: the database family, featuring the Schooner Appliance for MySQL Enterprise, and the Schooner cache family, which features the Schooner Appliance for Memcached. Both appliances are compatible with existing applications and management tools.

Description
Bottom rule

The Schooner appliances are next-generation data access appliances purpose-built for information-intensive Web 2.0 and cloud computing datacenters. These fully integrated, application-specific appliances incorporate leading-edge technology to deliver breakthrough performance and cost-effectiveness.

Schooner Appliance MySQL Enterprise

The MySQL database is optimized for Web applications, but scaling it to handle enterprise-class workloads involves extensive data partitioning and application modifications. The Schooner Appliance for MySQL Enterprise leverages multicore optimizations and over half a terabyte of enterprise-class flash memory to overcome these obstacles. It supports up to eight times the workload of traditional servers before scale-out is required, and scaling is as simple as adding more appliances. Host Bus Adapter support for additional external HDDs. No additional programming is required.

MySQL Enterprise includes production support, monitoring tools, and MySQL database software to deliver optimum performance, security, and uptime. Schooner Appliances for MySQL Enterprise also run optimized InnoDB to ensure data integrity and reliability.

Schooner Appliance Memcached

Memcached is an open-source client/server standard used to accelerate dynamic Web applications by alleviating database load. However, memcached throughput is limited by memory, multicore scalability, and network bandwidth.

The Schooner Appliance Memcached leverages Intel Nehalem multicore processors, enterprise-class flash memory, and high-speed interconnect to achieve significantly higher throughput and multicore scalability. The result is up to eight times performance improvement over traditional memcached servers. Schooner appliances replace ordinary servers at a ratio of 8:1, providing both immediate capital expense savings and ongoing operating expense savings.

The Schooner appliances are next-generation data access appliances purpose-built for information-intensive Web 2.0 and cloud computing datacenters. These fully integrated, application-specific appliances incorporate leading-edge technology to deliver breakthrough performance and cost-effectiveness.

They are preconfigured solutions featuring a combination of IBM System x® hardware technology and optimized software developed by Schooner.

One appliance addresses performance and scalability for MySQL environments and the other is for memcached installations.

Optimized for performance

The Schooner appliances allow customers to optimize their MySQL or memcached environment: The improved scalability for these environments is roughly 8:1, meaning that a customer could dramatically consolidate their datacenter, transforming their infrastructure and saving significant operating and capital costs.

These new solutions provide a new reason to call on accounts with MySQL or memcached installed. Imagine being able to tell your customer that they can effectively consolidate MySQL or memcached servers on a scale of 8:1 and that there is no viable competitor to threaten your sale.

Warranty period

System unit:

Optional IBM features initially installed in an IBM machine carry the same warranty period as the machine. If installed after the initial machine installation, they carry the balance of the machine warranty or the optional feature warranty, whichever is greater.

The following have been designated as consumables or supply items and are, therefore, not covered by this warranty:

Warranty service

If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service, depending on the type of warranty service specified below for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone or electronically by access to an IBM Web site. Certain machines contain remote support capabilities for direct problem reporting, remote problem determination, and resolution with IBM. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Following problem determination, if IBM determines On-site Service is required, scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call, machine technology and redundancy, and availability of parts. Service levels are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country- and location-specific information.

The type of service is Customer Replaceable Unit (for example, keyboard, mouse, speaker, memory, or hard disk drive) Service and On-site Service.

Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) Service

IBM provides a replacement CRU to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available from IBM at any time on your request. A CRU is designated as being either a Tier 1 (mandatory) or a Tier 2 (optional) CRU. Installation of Tier 1 CRUs, as specified in this announcement, is your responsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU at your request, you will be charged for the installation. You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request IBM to install it, at no additional charge, under the type of warranty service specified below, On-site Service.

Based upon availability, a CRU will be shipped for next-business-day (NBD) delivery. IBM specifies in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required, return instructions and a container are shipped with the replacement CRU, and you may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 15 days of your receipt of the replacement.

The following parts have been designated as Tier 1 CRUs:

On-site Service

This provides On-site Repair, 9 hours per day, Monday through Friday excluding holidays, NBD response. IBM or your reseller will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well lit, and suitable for the purpose. On-site Service is not available in all countries, and some countries have kilometer or mileage limitations from an IBM service center. In those locations where On-site Service is not available, the normal in-country service delivery is used.

Call IBM at 1-800-IBM-SERV (426-7378) to assist with problem isolation for hardware to determine if warranty service is required. Telephone support may be subject to additional charges, even during the limited warranty period.

Calls must be received by 5:00 p.m. local time in order to qualify for NBD service.

International Service and Support

Single-point-of-contact Service and Support is provided in Worldwide English (UK)

International Warranty Service

International Warranty Service (IWS) is not available for the Schooner Appliance.

The warranty service type and the service level provided in the servicing country may be different from that provided in the country in which the machine was purchased.

Under IWS, warranty service will be provided with the prevailing warranty service type and service level available for the IWS-eligible machine type in the servicing country, and the warranty period observed will be that of the country in which the machine was purchased.

To determine the eligibility of your machine and to view a list of countries where service is available, visit

http://www-304.ibm.com/jct01004c/systems/support/supportsite.wss/ warrantyform?brandind=5000008

For more information on IWS, refer to Services Announcement 601-034, dated September 25, 2001.

Licensing

Code included with this product are licensed under the terms and conditions of the License Agreements that are shipped with the system. The SOE is subject to the terms and conditions of a Schooner end-user license agreement.

Maintenance services

Warranty service upgrade

During the warranty period, a warranty service upgrade provides an enhanced level of On-site Service for an additional charge. A warranty service upgrade must be purchased during the warranty period and is for a fixed term (duration). It is not refundable or transferable and may not be prorated. If required, IBM will provide the warranty service upgrade enhanced level of On-site Service acquired by the customer. Service levels are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed.

CRUs will be provided as part of the machine's standard warranty CRU Service except that you may install a Tier 1 CRU yourself or request IBM installation, at no additional charge, under one of the On-site Service levels specified below.

IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well lit, and suitable for the purpose.
