Description

DB2 Universal Database (DB2 UDB) provides you with the database power you need for your e-business solutions. Leverage your existing applications and extend them to the Web. Use DB2 scalability and flexibility to create new ways to make your business competitive. DB2 UDB Version 6.1 offers significant enhancements to application development, and extending the value of Information to the mobile worker.

Enhanced Application Development

Linux Support

DB2 introduces full database support on the Linux operating system for DB2 Personal Edition, DB2 Workgroup Edition, DB2 Enterprise Edition, and both Developer's Editions. This Linux support is available worldwide with major Linux distributors, and includes full DB2 UDB Web support with JDBC, SQLJ, Net.Data, and the DB2 Control Center.

New Stored Procedure Builder for Java

IBM introduces the Stored Procedure Builder, a graphical application on Windows NT that supports the rapid development of DB2 stored procedures written in Java in servers on the Windows NT, OS/2®, AIX, and Solaris operating environments.

This new builder can be launched as a separate application from the DB2 program group, or from the following integrated development environment products:

  • IBM VisualAge® for Java, Version 3.0
  • MS Visual C++ Version 5.0 or 6.0
  • MS Visual Basic Version 5.0 or 6.0

Using Stored Procedure Builder you can:

  • Create new stored procedures
  • Build stored procedures on local and remote DB2 servers
  • Modify and rebuild existing stored procedures
  • Test the execution of installed stored procedures
  • Debug the execution of installed stored procedures, with the VisualAge for Java, Version 3.0  Distributed Debugger

For more information on VisualAge for Java, Version 3.0, visit the VisualAge Developer's Domain at:

Other application development improvements include:

  • Support for JDBC 2.0 for data access from Win32 clients
  • Compatibility with the "SQLJ Routines" specification for creating Java stored procedures
  • Compatibility with the OS/390® parameter types for DB2 stored procedures
  • Plus more, such as scrollable cursors, which are detailed in the What's New manual provided with the DB2 product

Manageability — LDAP Directory Services

To ease your client administration workload, DB2 Universal Database Version 6 offers support for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory services. LDAP directory services store and provide an access method for detailed information about resources such as users, printers, computers, file servers, and application servers. If you take advantage of LDAP by publishing database and server location and configuration in the LDAP directory, you do not have to manually catalog database and node entries on client machines.

DB2 supports the eNetwork™ LDAP Directory Version 2.1 and SecureWay™ Directory Version 3.1 servers and IBM SecureWay Directory Version 3.1 client. The eNetwork Directory server is available for the AIX, Solaris, and Windows™ NT operating systems and the SecureWay Directory server is available on Windows NT. SecureWay Directory clients are for the Windows 32-bit operating systems.

Data Warehousing Enhancements

Customers utilizing previous DB2 automatic summary tables (ASTs) capability will enjoy our newly automated triggers. These automated triggers can greatly enhance the speed of queries and overall system response time. As well, Multipartition ASTs and Multitable ASTs are introduced. Additional performance gains can be realized through star join, and optimizer costing enhancements. Index maintenance during load, Online re-org for indexes, and Point In Time (PIT) drop table (providing the ability to recover a dropped table) are new features that will increase the availability of the database for end-user queries.

Data warehouse customers can now replicate LOBs through IBM's data replication solutions. Also, data warehouse customers gain greater control over replicated data through the new replication option of capturing and applying only registered columns. This is also a performance enhancement, allowing customers to reduce the number of columns captured, thus reducing the amount of data moved through the enterprise.

DB2 Connect Support Enhancements

DB2 Connect support, an installation option of DB2 Enterprise Edition or DB2 Enterprise — Extended Edition providing full DB2 Connect functionality for your Universal Database servers, introduces the following improvements:

  • Large Scale Deployment, which is eased with a smaller disk and memory footprint, and file server install, which requires no code on the client workstation, allows hundreds or thousands of Windows workstations to connect, with maintenance only on the file server installation.
  • Host Connection Configuration to host systems is simplified in DB2 CEE environments through a Configuration Assistant and Add Database SmartGuide. Expanded import and export facilities have been added.
  • Multisite Update is made easier with a new SmartGuide.
  • Administration of DB2 for OS/390 servers through the DB2 Control Center.
  • Password encryption support between clients, DB2 CEE, and the host.
  • Integration with the Windows NT Performance Monitor.

Connection pooling is also introduced so that a pool of continuous connections to the host is maintained. When a client disconnects from the host, the host connection is reused by another client. This not only speeds up connections, but reduces overhead on gateway and networking resources and is especially useful in an OnLine Transaction Processing (OLTP) environment.

For more information on the improvements to DB2 Connect Version 6.1, refer to Software Announcement 299-125 , dated May 18, 1999.

Unicode/UCS-2 Support

Fixed-width, 16-bit Unicode support is introduced. The repertoire of Unicode is large enough to encompass all characters used in general text exchange. UCS-2 is now supported along with UTF-8. These formats allow users the ability to create a database that stores/retrieves data using all the major languages of the world.

In addition, extension of VARCHAR and VARGRAPHIC scalar functions allow VARCHAR functions against Graphic datatypes, and vice versa.

Support for wchar_t data type application support:

  • Applications can be written using wchar_t host variable in C/C++ and used in all client environments supported by DB2 when connecting with an Unicode database.
  • The application using wchar_t host variable can be developed in a single-byte (for example, English) environment and then be used in other language environments (for example, Japanese) without changes.

Net.Data support of Unicode also improves Web access.

Mobile User Support

DB2 Universal Database Satellite Edition (DB2 SE) beta software on Windows 32-bit operating systems brings the power of DB2 Universal Database to occasionally connected remote systems. Whether mobile or stationary, DB2 Satellite Edition allows businesses to provide new ways of enabling their employees to conveniently access relevant corporate information and easily conduct business directly with the customer. The DB2 Satellite Solution provides:

  • A full-function, high-performance, satellite database system that can be completely hidden from the end user
  • Robust, bi-directional, update anywhere replication between satellite system and any DB2 server in your enterprise

Additional Improvements

Leveraging Business Intelligence in e-business

Statistical functions covariance, correlation, linear regression, rank, denserank, and rownumber are new. These functions enable direct support for deeper statistical analysis that can exploit DB2® query processing facilities, including parallelism, to give results that previously could only be computed at the application level.

In addition, support for 16 and 32 Kb pages, and Optimizer enhancements to account for multiple buffer pools increase performance.

The dynamic rules bind option allows the ability to grant execute privileges to a package user instead of granting access privileges to database objects while using dynamic SQL.

Faster integrity constraint (or AST refresh) processing, the ability to make more queries, use Star Join optimization, plus bi-directional indexes allow faster performance.

Control Center

In DB2 Version 6, the Control Center is now implemented exclusively in Java™. The latest release of the Web Control Center, introduced in DB2 Version 5.2, provides the administration interface, with enhancements such as:

  • A new Performance Monitor
  • A new License Control Center (for counting, tracking, and administering user connections)
  • Enhanced support for DB2 for OS/390® databases

Show SQL/command capability in Control Center is also introduced. This allows the Database Administrator (DBA) to generate SQL/commands in response to actions taken by the Control Center for subsequent capture, analysis, and scheduling. The DBA can track the Control Center actions and create similar scripts.

Planning Information

Customer Responsibilities: Customers are responsible for determining their license requirements with the DB2 product family. The DB2 license entitlements are by users, processors, and/or installations.

User Entitlement: There are two methods of counting users of the DB2 product and of determining the required user entitlements. Customers should plan on which of the two counting methods should be applied to the DB2 server products based on usage requirements and then obtain additional user entitlements to the extent required.

The definition of concurrent and registered users is as follows:

  1. Concurrent Users: A concurrent user is a person, application, or device that has established a connection to one or more databases on one server. A user with multiple connections to a single server counts as only one concurrent user. The one exception is where multiple connections are made by a multiplexing program, application server, or other program that connects to DB2 providing access on behalf of other users. When these configurations are in use, customers need to consider each concurrent user of that program as a concurrent DB2 user. In the concurrent user model, the customer must ensure that each server is licensed for the maximum number of users that will use that server product at any one time.

The concurrent user licensing model is the only choice in situations where the identity of users is unknown. The concurrent user model is also appropriate where users require only occasional access to a particular server. Registered users may be the appropriate choice where there are many users, for example, at client workstations, who need to access databases on multiple database servers, or who connect to databases for long periods of time. Determining required licensing and monitoring the licensing requirements is the responsibility of the customer.

  2. Registered Users: A registered user is a person, application or device entitled to establish one or more connections to any authorized server install of a DB2 Universal Database or DB2 Connect product in the customer's enterprise, either directly or through a multiplexing program or application server. Registered Users of DB2 Workgroup Edition (DB2 WE) are counted separately, and DB2 user entitlements are not transferable between products. Customers should compare the total number of users requiring access to the DB2 server product with the sum of user entitlements provided with each install license, and obtain additional user entitlements if required.

DB2 WE licenses include entitlement for one concurrent or registered user. Customers should plan on which of the two counting methods should be applied to the DB2 server products based on usage requirements and then obtain additional user entitlements to the extent required. Connections from DB2 Satellite Edition (DB2 SE), and DB2 Personal Edition (DB2 PE), need not be counted as DB2 users for the purposes of determining the licensing requirements for the server machine.

DB2 Enterprise Editions (EE) and DB2 Enterprise-Extended Edition (EEE) do not restrict access to local DB2 server data through user counting, although customers are required to obtain user entitlements for host connectivity with these two products.

DB2 SE and DB2 PE are licensed for installation and use by an individual user at one workstation. Remote connections to DB2 SE and DB2 PE are allowed for Administration purposes only.

The DB2 Personal Developer's Edition (DB2 PDE) and DB2 Universal Developer's Edition (DB2 UDE) products are licensed for installation and use by an individual user, only for the purpose of evaluating, demonstrating, testing, and developing application programs. Multiple user entitlements are not available for either of these programs, although DB2 PDE, Version 6.1 is available at no charge.

Processor Entitlements: The DB2 program packages for DB2 EE, DB2 Query Patroller (DQP), DB2 Data Links Manager (DB2 DLM), and DB2 EEE include entitlement to install these programs on a machine having one processor. Where the customer requires the DB2 server to be installed on a machine with a greater number of processors, the customer must obtain additional processor server entitlements.

The DB2 WE product is entitled for installation on machines having up to four processors. Where the customer requires installation on a machine that has more than four processors, the customer must obtain a DB2 EE or DB2 EEE product along with the needed number of additional processor server entitlements.

Installation Entitlements: For DB2 PE, DB2 SE, and DB2 WE, customers must purchase an installation entitlement for each server installation.

For DB2 EE, DB2 EEE, DB2 DQP, and DB2 DLM, customers must purchase processor entitlements for each processor available to the DB2 system or cluster. Separate installation entitlements are not required.

Special Licensing Considerations

Licensing of Standby Servers: A DB2 WE server, when configured with high-availability software solely for use as an idle standby for one or more active DB2 WE licenses, customers need only obtain a base processor entitlement for the DB2 WE standby machine. A DB2 WE license installed and used as an active server and configured as a backup for one or more other DB2 WE servers must be licensed for users for its primary applications. Should failover occur, processor, Internet, and user entitlements from a failed DB2 WE machine are considered transferred to the backup machine. Customers must ensure that with this transfer of entitlement, the backup machine is fully licensed. When the failed machine recovers and resumes DB2 processing, these entitlements are returned to the recovered machine, and the backup machine entitlement returns to its original state.

When installing a DB2 EE server in a cluster environment, which is configured with high-availability software solely for use as an idle standby for one or more active DB2 EE licenses, customers need to obtain a one processor entitlement license for the DB2 EE standby machine. A DB2 EE license installed and used as an active server and configured as a backup for one or more other DB2 EE servers must be licensed for processors and host user connections for its primary applications. Should failover occur, processor and host user connection entitlements from a failed DB2 EE machine are considered transferred to the backup machine. Customers must ensure that with this transfer of entitlement, the backup machine is fully licensed for processors and host user connections. When the failed machine recovers and resumes DB2 processing, these processor and host user connection entitlements are returned to the recovered machine, and the backup machine entitlement returns to its original state. DB2 DLM, an option of DB2 EE, must be treated similarly.

A DB2 EEE server, which is configured with high-availability software solely for use as an idle standby for one or more active DB2 EEE licenses, must be licensed for the available processors to that hot standby machine. Processor Entitlements are not transferred from the failed server to the backup machine as they are with DB2 EE. Host User Connection entitlements are transferred. Should failover occur, user entitlements from a failed DB2 EEE machine are considered transferred to the backup machine, and customers must ensure that with this transfer of entitlement, the backup machine is fully licensed for host user connections. When the failed machine recovers and resumes DB2 processing, these host user connection entitlements are returned to the recovered machine, and the backup machine entitlement returns to its original state. DB2 DQP, an option of DB2 EEE, must be treated similarly.

Web Connections: Customers using DB2 EE and DB2 EEE have unlimited Web access to local DB2 data. Host User Connection entitlements must be obtained if accessing non-local DB2 data.

For customers using DB2 WE, Web access is available by obtaining a separate entitlement for each processor available to the program installation. (For example, if installed on a two-processor server, you must obtain two External Web Access Entitlements.) Web access to DB2 WE servers from internal connections must be counted as DB2 users of the product. You should note that this licensing makes a distinction between Web connections made from within your enterprise (intranet connections, "inside the fire-wall") and those made from outside your enterprise (Internet connections, "outside the fire-wall").

Complimentary Products: IBM provides licensed copies of complimentary products in our product boxes. Customers are responsible for independent product registration of these products, as well as obtaining any desired upgrades for these complimentary products.

Installability: To upgrade to DB2 Version 6.1 from DB2 Version 5, you need to obtain the DB2 Version 6 program code and perform a new installation. Following DB2 Version 6 installation, your catalogs, directories, and instances will need to be migrated.

Direct Customer Support: Installation and support for these products on all supported platforms is provided by IBM Global Services under the Personal System Support Family organization at 800-237-5511 for a fee. For information or prices related to a SupportLine Technical Support contact, call 800-426-4343. To speak to an IBM representative about personal systems software, call 800-IBM-4YOU (426-4968).
