Performance Improvements in DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 5
Useability and Application Growth with DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 5
Reference: Software Announcement 298-176 , dated June 2, 1998. Key PrerequisitesRefer to the Technical Information section for details. Planned Availability DateDescriptionDFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 5 provides new functions and improvements in the following areas:
Improved Performance Dramatic improvements have been made in HFS performance to approach the performance provided by UNIX file servers on high-end systems. This requires the functions provided by OS/390 R5. DFSMS 1.5 users who need UNIX System Services functions must run with OS/390 R5 or above. HFS performance improvements: For files that are 512 Kbytes or less:
And additionally:
Shared Catalog Performance in a Sysplex Performance of shared ICF catalogs is enhanced in a sysplex environment with usage of the S/390® Coupling Facility cache structure instead of DASD for the catalog control record. All of the sharing systems must be at DFSMS/MVS V1R5 level and have access to the coupling facility to avail themselves of this capability. To ensure data integrity, PTFs must be applied on lower systems in a mixed environment before using this capability. DFSMShsm Volume Backup Performance Improvement Performance of incremental backup has been improved by overlapping input/output operations with catalog and HSM control data set update operations. DFSMSdss DEFRAG RVA Enhancement DFSMSdss DEFRAG has been enhanced by utilizing its SnapShot capability to avoid I/O to the host for track relocation on RVA DASD. Enhanced Sysplex Exploitation Single GRSplex Serialization (allowing multiple DFSMShsm HSMplexes) This function will permit different HSMplexes to coexist in a single GRSplex. Previously, if an installation had more than one HSMplex in a sysplex environment, each HSMplex would block the others when updating the DFSMShsm control data sets in non-RLS mode or when performing such functions as L1 to L2 migration. DFSMShsm will now use serialization unique to an HSMplex, thus eliminating contention between HSMplexes for these resources. Secondary Host Promotion (when the DFSMShsm operation on the primary host fails) In a multiple host DFSMShsm environment, one host is identified as a "primary host" while the other DFSMShsm hosts are identified as "secondary hosts". In a DFSMShsm multi-host configuration, the "primary host" is the only host that performs the following DFSMShsm functions:
DFSMShsm will enable "secondary hosts" to take over "primary host" functions, when a primary host failure occurs. Also, support will be provided to enable DFSMShsm hosts to take over Secondary Space Management (SSM) from a failed primary or secondary host. This function is available in both Basic and Parallel Sysplex environments. Access to OAM Objects From Any System in the Sysplex OAM now supports the parallel sysplex environment for object access. Any OAM data object may be accessed from any system that belongs to the same OAM XCF group in a parallel sysplex regardless of which system owns the data object or which media (DASD, optical or tape) the data object resides on. The 3995 optical library dataservers continue to be controlled and managed by a single OAM running on a single system. OAM now supports multiple system logical connections for 3995 optical libraries attached via ESCON® hardware. This lets you take an optical library offline on one system and brought online on another system in the same OAM XCF group in a parallel sysplex. Requests to read data from or write data to 3995 optical volumes that reside in a 3995 optical library being managed by a different OAM on another system are serviced by sending the request (and associated data) via XCF to the OAM running on the system that is managing and controlling the 3995 optical library dataserver. In the event of a system failure, the management and control of the 3995 optical library dataserver can be switched from an owning system to another OAM running on another system belonging to the same XCF group. OAM sysplex support requires the use of DB2 Version 4 Data Sharing and the XCF component of the base operating system. Sysplex sharing is not supported for object data residing on Filenet 9246 libraries. Greater Than 100 Object SGs & User-defined Object SG HLQs OAM no longer restricts users to 100 object storage groups with high level qualifiers of GROUP00-GROUP99. OAM uses the DB2 package sets to allow more than 100 object storage groups in an OAM configuration. This allows users to specify the high-level qualifiers for the object storage and object directory databases when creating or altering object storage group definitions using ISMF panels. Integrity of HFS Mounts in a Shared Environment Improvements have been made to reduce integrity problems experienced with the file system due to inadvertent mount for R/W access from multiple systems. This will help reduce potential file system integrity problems, when the serialization across the sharing systems is compromised due to instances like improper use of conversion lists, all of the sharing systems are not part of the same GRS serialization mechanism (ring or star), and so on. Enhanced DFSMSrmm Removable Media Management Providing an API for Read/Write Access The following service enhancements have been integrated into this release.
Supporting Separate Retention and Vaulting Policies DFSMSrmm now supports separate definitions for retention and vaulting policies. This support makes it easier to convert from other products which have multiple sources for management policies. In addition, policies may override other sources of retention information such as JCL or the DFSMSrmm system default. Another feature supported is the ability to return a volume to scratch in a single inventory management execution. Supporting Environments with Shared and Non-shared Catalogs DFSMSrmm inventory management has been improved by dynamically tracking changes in the catalog status of tape data sets. This removes the need to check the catalog status of all recorded data sets other than on an exception basis. An option is provided to run expiration processing on each system for only the data sets created on that system. A utility is provided to synchronize DFSMSrmm with user catalogs. This utility supports both shared and non-shared catalog environments and can be run periodically as a safeguard or during recovery activities. Enabling Special Handling Instructions DFSMSrmm now supports use of a special DD statement to point to a data set containing special handling information needed by the tape operator. This DD statement can be used to identify tapes needed for further processing (for example, creating sticky labels containing data set and volume information) or for immediate removal to a disaster recovery site. Storage Administration Functions In DFSMS/MVS 1.3, the NaviQuest function in DFSMSdfp allowed you to test SMS ACS Routines in batch. You could also Define and Alter a management class, a Pool storage group, or a tape storage group and add/delete a volume to a Pool storage group. The interface allowed access from an application program or a REXX EXEC without requiring hands-on operation using ISMF. NaviQuest has been further enhanced in this release to:
Supporting Master Catalog Alias Resolution by System Symbolic substitution of alias names for user catalogs allows a different user catalog name to be resolved on each system. For example, it allows an alias name of IMSCAT to resolve to IMS.PRODCAT on system A and IMS.TESTCAT on system B. Symbolic substitution of alias names for non-VSAM data sets allows you to use a single alias name to refer to different data set names on different systems. For example, an alias name of SYS1.PLILIB can resolve to SYS1.R4PLILIB on SYSTEM A and SYS1.R5PLILIB on system B. The symbolic substitution is done at time of use for non-VSAM data sets and at ipl, catalog address space restart, or when the master catalog is updated on another shared system for user catalog names. The names for symbolic substitution are defined on the SYMDEF parameter in the LOADXX member of SYS1.PARMLIB. This enhancement removes some of the problems related to usage of a single catalog as a master catalog by more than one system in a sysplex. Specification of the keyword, STORGRP, with one or more Storage Group names causes DFSMSdss to use as its input volume filter all the online volumes in the named Storage Group(s) during logical data set dump, data set copy, and logical release. The function provided by the STORGRP keyword is equivalent to that provided by LOGINDY (for dump and copy) or LOGDYNAM (for release), when all the volumes in a storage group are included in the volume list. DFSMShsm Volume Backup by Storage Group The BACKVOL command can be specified with a new STORGRP parameter which allows all volumes in the named storage group(s) to be processed for incremental backup or full volume dump operations. Application Growth Enablement The single volume restriction has been removed for HFS data sets. HFS data sets can now span up to 59 volumes, with up to 255 total extents for all volumes, and up to 123 extents per volume. Pre-DFSMS 1.5 systems are able to access HFS data sets as long as they are not multivolume data sets and not indicated as multivolume candidates in the catalog. PTFs must be applied on pre-DFSMS 1.5 systems before allowing read or write access to DFSMS 1.5 systems to ensure integrity of the file system. Allowing a Large Number of Open Data Sets for IMS and CICS TS Subsystems This release allows you to fully exploit the IMS 6.1 and CICS Transaction Server 10,000 DD limit support. It allows IMS (for OSAM or VSAM) and CICS (for VSAM) to allocate and open a large number of data sets. Prior releases allowed up to 8191 open Data Extent Blocks (DEBs) or data sets. DFSMSdfp now allows more than 10,000 DEBs to be opened in an address space at any one time. Allowing HSM Control Data Sets to be Larger Than 4 GB Per Cluster The DFSMShsm control data sets can now be allocated as VSAM EA data sets when the CDSs are accessed in RLS mode. This improvement will lift the 4 GB restriction that applies to each DFSMShsm control data set cluster. Expanded Data Management Capabilities Extended format support for all remaining VSAM data set organizations (ESDS, RRDS, LDS, VRRDS) is provided, including support for the following:
EA for VSAM LDS supports DB2 Version 6 table spaces larger than 1 TB. DB2 support for extended addressability linear data sets requires DB2 Version 6. Improved Interoperability Supporting ISO/ANSI Version 4 Tapes ANSI and ISO Version 4 tapes are now supported for data interchange with non-S/390 platforms. As with Version 3 tapes, the labels must be in seven-bit ASCII. Unlike Version 3, data can be in any code page. The 2K blocksize limit for data has been removed for Version 4 tapes. Customers can choose ISO/ANSI Version 4 support while labeling with a system-wide parameter. The default will continue to be Version 3 but can be overridden by labelling utilities IEHINITT and EDGINERS. For ease of migration to DFSMS 1.5, the data written to Version 4 tapes will continue to be translated to 7-bit ASCII just like Version 3 tapes. However, customers can choose to convert the data to any of the supported code pages. The data is converted from a system default CCSID (Coded Character Set Identifier or Code Page) of 500 (International EBCDIC) to the CCSID specified on the DD statement. An application can convert data from a CCSID other than 500 by specifying the CCSID on the EXEC and/or JOB statements. Conversion is only supported when BSAM or QSAM is used and when conversion does not result in a change to the length of user data. CCSID of 65535 has a special meaning and results in bypassing conversion. The CCSID is recorded in the HDR2 label and is used for conversion on read operations. Note: MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 1.0 will not be supported by DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 5, as indicated earlier in Software Announcement 298-176 , dated June 2, 1998. Year 2000This product is Year 2000 ready.
