DESCRIPTION

More Application Choice

OS/390 Automated UNIX System Option for VM, VSE and OS/390 Release 1 (Auto UNIX System): This easy-to-use Auto UNIX System option will be available as an additional OS/390 delivery vehicle in December 1998. This new delivery option provides an automated UNIX application platform that is easily installed and designed not to require OS/390 (MVS) skills for management or maintenance. It can provide a low total-cost-of-computing solution for VM and VSE customers wishing to exploit UNIX applications that are only available on OS/390, but do not want to invest in the skills required to install, tailor and maintain a native OS/390 system. It can also be a cost-effective solution for small, remote or departmental solutions in large enterprises.

To make Auto UNIX System even more effective for implementing these new applications, three optional features are provided. To order/activate these features, a basic license for each must be acquired.

  • Auto UNIX System C/C++ (C/C++ Compiler with Debugger) feature for porting, developing and testing UNIX applications

  • Auto UNIX System DB2 (IBM DATABASE 2 Server for OS/390 (DB2 for OS/390) Version 5) feature for relational database support

  • Auto UNIX System MQSeries (MQSeries for MVS/ESA Version 1 Release 2) feature provides an additional connectivity option
Typical OS/390 UNIX-based applications and enablers include:
  • Web content hosting

  • Secure network computing applications

  • e-business applications

  • Lotus Domino for S/390

  • Java (TM) Applications, servlets and applets

  • The ability to develop, port, and run generalized UNIX interactive applications and workloads that take advantage of the OS/390 UNIX Hierarchical File System (HFS) and DB2

  • Consolidation of alternate platform UNIX application workloads on S/390
Application Choice ... Ready to Run

This new OS/390 delivery option supports the industry trends of server consolidation, network computing, e-business, and application enablement.

  • Auto UNIX System and Web content serving

WebSphere Application Server for OS/390 (formerly "Domino Go Webserver"), shipped integrated with Auto UNIX System, provides a quick and easy way to use the Web for meeting your business objectives. In addition to HTTP services, the WebSphere Application Server for OS/390, consists of IBM's Java servlet-based Web application server that enables customers to deploy and manage Web-based applications. Java Servlet internal process support is enabled, based on the latest available JDK driver. Running the enhanced Java servlet engine, Servlet Express, inside the Webserver address space results in less data transfer for servlet execution and is a significant performance enhancement.

For secure Web serving, the 40 bit CDMF software encryption for the WebSphere Application Server is integrated into Auto UNIX System, delivering secure Web serving as part of the system. Auto UNIX System is subject to US export laws and regulations.

In conjunction with Web serving or simply as a cost effective network terminal, the IBM Network Station (TM) support in Auto UNIX System gives your organization the capability for "intranet" and "thin client" application support, quickly and easily.

  • OS/390 Auto UNIX System and Lotus Domino for S/390 Support

Auto UNIX System is pre-built and configured so that the Lotus Domino Server can be quickly and easily installed. Lotus Domino for S/390 combines the power of Lotus Notes (R) as an collaborative application platform with the strengths of S/390 as a server. Lotus Notes is a client/server environment that allows users to communicate securely over a local area network (LAN) or communications link. Lotus Notes combines an application development environment, a document database, and sophisticated messaging and calendar system for providing productive and powerful enterprise-wide capabilities.

Lotus Notes enables you to create OS/390 UNIX applications for improving the quality of everyday business practices in such areas as product development, customer service, sales, and account management. The OS/390 Auto UNIX System support for Lotus Domino for S/390 allows you to take advantage of this environment, within an automated and easily installed environment.

WebSphere Application Server for OS/390 also works with Lotus Domino for S/390, offering customers an opportunity to utilize applications that integrate commerce, business processes, and content capabilities.

There are over 95 applications for Lotus Domino for S/390, that are available from over 65 independent software vendors (ISVs). For more information about Lotus Domino for S/390, it's capabilities, applications and services, explore the Internet site:

In addition, for customers wanting to move from OfficeVision (R) VM (OV/VM) to Lotus Domino for S/390, IBM Global Services offers two "SmoothStart (TM) Services" that can be used with Auto UNIX System to help customers become productive quickly.
    • IBM Installation Service for OfficeVision Migration Tool

    • IBM Installation Service for Lotus Calendar Connector for OfficeVision
System Environment

The Auto UNIX System requires no OS/390 (MVS) systems programmer or operator skills to install, maintain, or use. Auto UNIX System not only is a UNIX system -- it is tailored to provide UNIX and GUI interfaces for system functions, giving the "look and feel" of a UNIX system. Many of the system's administration tasks, such as system install, system refresh, and TCP/IP configuration, are accomplished using a new GUI. The other tasks, such as user and password administration, PTF maintenance, and file system maintenance, will only require some basic UNIX administration skills.

This additional OS/390 delivery vehicle option is pre-built and configured by IBM utilizing OS/390 Application Enabling Technology (OS/390 AET) which is a base element of OS/390.

For more information about OS/390 AET consult:

Whereas OS/390 AET has the flexibility for you to customize the system for your own environment, with Auto UNIX System all required system programming and set-up has been done by IBM and is included in this delivery option. Because it is a pre-built and configured system, many features are already defined. For example, many standard daemons ("task processor") are predefined and certain daemons are activated at system startup. This makes the Auto UNIX System fully operational when it is started. It is delivered in an easy-to-install dump restore (DDR) format and runs either stand-alone, in an LPAR, or as a VM/ESA guest system.

TCP/IP (part of the eNetwork (TM) Communications Server) is the most often used communication vehicle for UNIX applications, making a working TCP/IP configuration critical for UNIX application availability. Often, maintaining the TCP/IP configuration involves editing multiple files with little or no guidance for available options and their meanings. Auto UNIX System provides an intuitive, Web-based, GUI for TCP/IP configuration. It hides the complexity of configuring TCP/IP, and helps avoid definition errors by value checking and cross checking.

Auto UNIX System is supported in an LPAR or native mode on the 9672-Rn2/Rn3, G3, G4 or G5 using the HMC or SA-SE for the Auto UNIX System Control Center. On the Multiprise (TM) 2000 it is supported in an LPAR or native mode using an optional HMC for the Auto UNIX System Control Center. In addition, Auto UNIX System is supported on any processor supporting OS/390 Version 2 Release 6 (refer to the following exceptions) when OS/390 is running as a guest of VM/ESA Version 2 Release 2.0 or later with an OS/2 (R)-based PC for the Auto UNIX System Control Center. Auto UNIX System is not supported in any environment on P/390, R/390 or S/390 Integrated Server.

This additional OS/390 delivery option is not meant to replace existing S/390 systems. It is an additional choice for VM and VSE customers to run UNIX applications with Auto UNIX System, without requiring the OS/390 skills to install, tailor and operate OS/390 in native mode. It is also being offered as another option for medium and large enterprise customers who have departmental or remote non-S/390 systems, but require the security, scalability, availability, and robustness "Qualities of Service" -- (QoS) that have long been the hallmark of S/390. This is a particularly valuable option where the necessary OS/390 skills to install, run, and support the desired OS/390 UNIX-based applications do not physically exist at the departmental or remote site where the OS/390 solutions are to be installed and run.

S/390 New Application License Charge

The S/390 New Application License Charge provides a new opportunity to make it even more cost effective to port/test and run production on UNIX applications Auto UNIX System or OS/390. This new license charge is aimed to help customers reduce the total cost of computing associated with the development and initial implementation of these new applications. With Auto UNIX System, this offering is especially well suited for e-business solutions such as Lotus Domino for S/390 and Web content serving. When a separate processor is more attractive than an LPAR or VM guest solution, the S/390 New Application License Charge is an attractive new software price for Auto UNIX System, OS/390 and DB2 for customers dedicating a S/390 CMOS processor to qualifying new applications or server consolidation. The S/390 New Application License Charge is available for Auto UNIX System, OS/390 and DB2 and selected optional features of these products. Refer to Software Announcement 298-371 dated September 29, 1998.

Auto UNIX System Support Terms and Conditions

The Front End Support Team (FEST)

A new approach to support for Auto UNIX System will be provided by the IBM Front End Support Team. This team has been created to provide defect support to Auto UNIX System customers, while not requiring the Auto UNIX System customers to build OS/390 system programming skills. As long as you have not altered or modified the pre-built Auto UNIX System (as determined by IBM Support), you are entitled to this new level of support. User volumes and data may be modified; however, the integrity of the Auto UNIX System volumes must be maintained. Auto UNIX System customers, who may have OS/390 system programmer skills, may elect to modify the system, but then they are no longer entitled to FEST level of support (refer to "Transitioning out of Auto UNIX System").

Access to the FEST is obtained through your normal IBM S/390 support contacts (voice or electronic, as appropriate). Normal, over the phone, S/390 support assistance is provided by the IBM Support team. In addition, the FEST will assist you with PD/PSI (Problem Determination/Problem Source Identification) and problem work-arounds (where appropriate). If PD/PSI requires OS/390 system programmer skills, the FEST can remotely access the customers' Auto UNIX System to perform PD/PSI on the customers' behalf. Remote access to the system may be necessary to provide complete and timely diagnostics and service.

Service Criteria

S/390 service criteria applies to the Auto UNIX System service. This level of service includes:

  • 24 x 7 availability to the IBM Support team

  • S/390 problem callback criteria:
    • Severity 1 within 2 business hours

    • Severity 2 within 4 business hours

    • Severity 3 and 4 by the end of the next business day
  • Corrective service delivered by:
    • Corrective service tapes (PTFs)
The Auto UNIX System provides corrective service for all severity 1 and severity 2 problems through the normal IBM PTF process. Severity 3 and severity 4 calls will be taken, and problem records opened, but resolution to these problems may not be provided until a future release or refresh level of the Auto UNIX System.

The Auto UNIX System contains SMP/E and all the control information and libraries needed to maintain the current service level for all SMP/E managed components. Auto UNIX System commands are provided, as an interface to SMP/E, for service install. Therefore, the Auto UNIX System administrator is not required to have any knowledge of SMP/E.

In addition, the Auto UNIX System will also make a new release or system refresh available at least every six months. This involves a standalone restore of the system residence pack and a logical restore of other base system code and SMP/E data/libraries. You can perform this refresh without affecting any installation-unique or user defined data. At times it may be necessary for customers to install system refreshes in order to resolve a problem. This allows for more complex problem resolution while eliminating the need for OS/390 system programmer skills. System refreshes can be easily installed using the Auto UNIX System Control Center.

Preview: Auto UNIX System future releases

It is intended that Auto UNIX System will be enhanced every six months and will become available 3 months after an OS/390 release.

Specific planned enhancements include:

  • Providing support for Baan ERP applications on the Auto UNIX System, so that Baan ERP applications can be installed, operated and run without OS/390 (MVS) skill.

  • Providing support for MQSeries/VM connectivity.
With these enhancements to Auto UNIX System, you will be able to implement cost effective automated UNIX application servers for stand-alone Baan ERP applications, providing a quick and easy implementation on S/390 hardware that does not require OS/390 system programmer skills to operate or use. Together with other Auto UNIX System enhancements, you can exploit UNIX applications such as Baan ERP, Lotus Domino for S/390 and Web content serving easily, bringing these applications into production even faster to enable their cost and productivity benefits.

Support for Baan ERP applications and MQSeries/VM connectivity is planned to be available to selected customers in second half of 1999.

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the 20th and 21st centuries, provided all other products (for example, software, hardware, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

S/390 continues to rapidly evolve in anticipation of the ever-changing demands of enterprise computing to offer more applications that are at the heart of successful global enterprises. This current evolution is based upon over thirty years experience in enterprise computing and a long standing reputation for reliability, scalability, availability, security, and manageability.

One key ingredient in this software transformation is OS/390 Automated UNIX System Option for VM, VSE and OS/390 Release 1 (Auto UNIX System). The integration of OS/390 UNIX System Services (OS/390 UNIX) and the systems management capabilities of Auto UNIX System provide a fast, easy and cost-effective way to install, maintain and operate network computing, server consolidation and ERP applications that are UNIX based.

Auto UNIX System builds on the enhanced industry standard function for UNIX and TCP/IP with certain IBM systems automation functions, so that critical enterprise computing applications can continue to exploit the power of the OS/390 system without the requirement to have OS/390 (MVS) skill. Auto UNIX System provides a new level of coexistence for VM and VSE customers looking for easy to install and use UNIX applications that are only available on OS/390. The addition of Auto UNIX System enhances the platform for all S/390 customers by providing an automated and "ready-to-use" UNIX application porting, deployment and execution environment.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

AUTO UNIX SYSTEM

Ready-to-Run System -- No System Programming Required

Auto UNIX (R) System provides all the system programming required for running an OS/390 (R) UNIX environment on OS/390. All the required setup tasks have already been performed. This includes customization of base operating system components, like APPC, WLM, JES, SMF, the definition of a Hierarchical File System (HFS) for OS/390 UNIX and a default customization of the OS/390 UNIX shell. In addition, a extensive security structure is set-up. All user IDs and groups for internal processing, like started tasks, are defined. Several user IDs for "real" users with different access profiles are provided. After Auto UNIX System is installed, it can be used immediately.

No OS/390 (MVS (TM)) Skill Needed -- Administer the System from Auto UNIX System

All required system administration can be done in Auto UNIX System, so that there is no need for OS/390 (MVS) skill. Auto UNIX System provides a whole suite of administration commands that are implemented for the OS/390 UNIX shell. The syntax of the commands is in a UNIX-like style, making their use intuitive for a UNIX-skilled person. The commands allow:

  • Management of users and security
  • Management of file systems
  • Operation of Auto UNIX System
  • Management of the network
  • Execution of service and diagnosis
Running Auto UNIX System Unattended

Auto UNIX System contains powerful automation policies and housekeeping capabilities. Automation policies help ensure not only that the subsystems are started in the appropriate sequence during IPL, but also that subsystems and UNIX daemons are automatically restarted when they fail. For each of the subsystems, automation watches for messages indicates problems and provides for appropriate recovery or restart operations. Housekeeping helps ensure that data sets that are periodically filled by the system, like log data sets, are regularly trimmed by removing old data, so that they do not overflow.

The Auto UNIX System Control Center -- Hiding the OS/390 System Console

Automation and housekeeping already reduce the need to use the OS/390 system console. To completely shield the user from the console, the Auto UNIX System comes with the "Control Center." The Control Center is an application that can run on:

  • Hardware Management Console (HMC)
  • Stand-alone support element (SA-SE)
  • Workstation with OS/2 (R)
The Control Center allows you to determine the system status and perform functions, like IPLing or shutting down the system, restarting access to certain functions of TCP/IP, recovering the system or taking a stand-alone dump. In addition, it monitors the state of the system, and if the system goes into a disabled wait state, it automatically re-IPLs the system.

Application Support -- the Auto UNIX System Application Server

Applications running in an Auto UNIX System environment can make use of all APIs that are accessible from OS/390 UNIX. This includes OS/390 UNIX functions, SQL calls to DB2 (R), client functions to access a directory server using the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), and Lotus (R) Domino (TM) APIs, if Lotus Domino is installed. APIs are also included for Auto UNIX System administration commands, so that user-written programs can take advantage of these functions. All applications using these interfaces can run and be administered from the OS/390 UNIX shell. UNIX applications on OS/390 often require for performance reasons that modules/DLLs are put in the Dynamic Link Pack Area (LPA). Auto UNIX System provides a command to perform this task from the OS/390 UNIX shell.

In addition, Auto UNIX System provides special support for DB2, MQSeries (R), Lotus Domino for S/390 (R), WebSphere Application Server, Network Station (TM) Manager, and TCP/IP:

  • Auto UNIX System IBM DATABASE 2 (TM) Server for OS/390, Version 5 (DB2)

Auto UNIX System DB2 can optionally be included in Auto UNIX System environment. When included, Auto UNIX System DB2 comes completely customized with one subsystem already setup and ready to use. SQL statements and DB2 commands can be entered and DB2 utilities can be invoked through the OS/390 UNIX shell, allowing DB2 administration to also be performed without OS/390 skill. The DB2 precompiler can be invoked from the OS/390 UNIX shell, enabling DB2 application programming. In addition, some DB2 subsystem parameters can be changed from the shell.

  • Auto UNIX System MQSeries for MVS/ESA (TM), Version 1 Release 2

Auto UNIX System MQSeries can be included as an option for additional connectivity. Auto UNIX System MQSeries is also completely set up and ready to use, including the definition of default queues. Only APPC connections are supported. Auto UNIX System MQSeries system commands and utilities can be invoked directly from the OS/390 UNIX shell.

  • Lotus Domino for S/390

Auto UNIX System is pre-built and configured to install Lotus Domino Server quickly and easily. The Lotus Domino 4.6.1 server, with Notes (TM) clients, is a leading software solution that combines messaging, groupware and the Internet. You can start with world-class messaging and Internet integration and easily add custom applications. With Domino and Notes, you can effectively store, manage and distribute information because it is the central access point for finding and sharing the information that you need, whether it is located in e-mail, relational databases, or host-based systems, in your favorite desk-top application or on the Internet. Lotus Notes (R) lets you communicate with colleagues, collaborate in teams and coordinate strategic business processes.

For more information on how to obtain on Lotus Domino for S/390, refer to the following World Wide Web URL:

  • WebSphere Application Server for OS/390 (formerly Domino Go Webserver)

WebSphere Application Server for OS/390 comes installed and ready-to-go in Auto UNIX System. Auto UNIX System has the complete infrastructure set up, such as, creating required HFS files, for serving Web pages as well as JAVA ServletExpress.

Java (TM) Servlet internal process support is enabled, based on the latest available JDK driver. Running the enhanced Java servlet engine, ServletExpress, inside the Webserver address space results in less data transfer for servlet execution. This a significant performance enhancement. Java servlets execute quickly, since the servlets are invoked as threads in a single process. They are similar to Java applets, but run on the server instead of the client providing faster execution. Applications previously developed in C or with CGI scripts can now take advantage of WebSphere ServletExpress to provide better service and flexibility for robust Web content sites.

  • Network Station Manager

Auto UNIX System provides the infrastructure on OS/390 to act as a boot server for networkstations and as a target server for applications running on the network station. The Network Station Manager code is included and ready to get a Network Station up and running "out of the box."

  • Making TCP/IP Definitions Easier

TCP/IP is the most often used communication vehicle for UNIX applications, making a working TCP/IP configuration critical for UNIX application availability. In normal OS/390 operations maintaining the TCP/IP configuration involves editing multiple OS/390 UNIX files, with little to no guidance for the available options and their meanings. Auto UNIX System provides a Web-based, intuitive GUI for TCP/IP configuration enabling customers to access TCP/IP functionality. It hides the complexity of configuring TCP/IP and helps to avoid definition errors by value checking and cross checking.

Communicating with Auto UNIX System

You can communicate with other systems from Auto UNIX System. This communication includes access to and movement of data between your VM or VSE systems and Auto UNIX System. Auto UNIX Systems supports APPC and TCP/IP as a communication vehicle. Additional support for MQSeries comes with the Auto UNIX System MQSeries feature. Auto UNIX System is already set up so that any of these communications protocols can easily be used. Required configuration is done by OS/390 UNIX shell commands, or in case of TCP/IP, by an intuitive, Web-based GUI. Auto UNIX System includes sample jobs and programs, for the Auto UNIX System side as well as for the VSE and VM side, to easily test a defined configuration and to serve as skeletons for user-written communication applications.

Auto UNIX System Service and Maintenance

Auto UNIX System comes with special service support; it eliminates the need for OS/390 skills for such things as in-depth problem determination and maintenance. Service is done via regular corrective and preventive PTFs for severity 1 and severity 2 problems. PTFs are installable from the OS/390 UNIX shell, refreshes can be installed using the Control Center. All HOLDDATA actions that would require using OS/390 (MVS) are automated and resolved with Auto UNIX System PTFs.

Service Currency

Each release of Auto UNIX System will be supported for a period of 15 months, starting at General Availability of that release. Customers must install the most current release of Auto UNIX System in order to help ensure the most complete level of service and function. If the customer chooses to transition from Auto UNIX System to a standard OS/390 system, service currency will be based on the release of OS/390 that was the basis for your Auto UNIX System.

Remote Support

In order for IBM to provide PD/PSI assistance, all Auto UNIX System customers will be required to allow IBM electronic remote access to their Auto UNIX Systems.

Other Service Considerations

In order to provide high stability and reliability of the Auto UNIX System, IBM will fix all Severity 1 and Severity 2 problems in accordance with our standard support levels for Severity 1 and Severity 2 problems. This includes all base components and feature products. All Severity 3 and Severity 4 problems will be addressed and fixed as appropriate in future releases.

  • Severity 1 is defined as a problem resulting in critical business impact resulting from the customers' inability to use the Auto UNIX System.

  • Severity 2 is defined as a problem resulting in significant business impact resulting from the customers' severely restricted use of the Auto UNIX System.

  • Severity 3 is defined as a problem resulting in some business impact resulting from the customers' inability to use less significant features of Auto UNIX System (not critical to the customers operation).

  • Severity 4 is defined as a problem that causes little business impact on operations, or where a reasonable circumvention to the problem has been implemented.
Transitioning out of Auto UNIX System

In order to maintain the integrity of the pre-configured Auto UNIX System, customers may not alter the system volumes of the Auto UNIX System. User volumes, including user data, HFS areas and user applications may be modified. If the system has been modified, and the customer reports a problem with the system, IBM Support may require that the customer restore the system from the product tapes originally delivered by IBM, or from customer backup tapes (returning the system to its pre-configured state). The exception to this condition is where an Auto UNIX System customer has decided to transition to native OS/390. In this case the OS/390 customer no longer gets FEST level of support. Normal OS/390 Support terms and conditions will apply following transition.

To transition out of Auto UNIX System to native OS/390, customers must first contact IBM and advise them of their plans to do so. At this time, they request licensing for any systems management products and features they wish to use in the native OS/390 environment. For those products and features that they license, they will receive the installation tapes and documentation.

Prior to transitioning from Auto UNIX System to native OS/390, IBM needs to be contacted to determine the underlying systems management product licenses required on the native OS/390 system. Auto UNIX System provides jobs to delete the system management products used.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Specified Operating Environment

Hardware Requirements: Auto UNIX System is supported in an LPAR or native mode on the 9672-Rn2/Rn3, G3, G4 or G5 using the HMC or SA-SE for the Auto UNIX System Control Center. On the Multiprise (TM) 2000 it is supported in an LPAR or native mode using an optional HMC for the Auto UNIX System Control Center. In addition, Auto UNIX System is supported on any processor supporting OS/390 Version 2 Release 6 (refer to the following exceptions) when OS/390 is running as a guest of VM/ESA (R) Version 2 Release 2.0 or later with an OS/2-based PC for the Auto UNIX System Control Center. Auto UNIX System is not supported in any environment on P/390, R/390 or S/390 Integrated Server.

The Auto UNIX System requires the following hardware features:

  • S/390 ESA-capable processors or equivalent
  • DASD devices and volumes
  • Tape device
  • Network Connections
S/390 Processor: S/390 Processor for the Auto UNIX System requires a dedicated minimum of 128 MB of storage. S/390 processor with an HMC or SA-SE requires a service level of at least A0C to run the Control Center.

A Personal Computer is required to run the Control Center when Auto UNIX System is installed in a VM/ESA guest environment. If the hardware does not have an HMC or SA-SE you can only run Auto UNIX System as a guest system under VM/ESA.

DASD Devices and Volumes: Auto UNIX System supports the following DASD device types:

  • IBM 3390
  • IBM 3380
  • IBM 9345
You specify the DASD device type of the system volumes when you place your order for Auto UNIX System. Two system volumes must be the same DASD device type as selected in the order.

For sample configurations consisting of DASDs of identical device types and capacities the required number of volumes are shown below.

Tape Device: Tapes are used for Auto UNIX System installation, service and recovery (backup/restore). Auto UNIX System is shipped on either 3480 or 4-mm DAT tapes.

Network Connections: When you install Auto UNIX System, you must define at least one TCP/IP configuration. You need a dedicated LAN attachment port configured for the TCP/IP Passthru mode.

You can have several kinds of connections to TCP/IP:

  • Channel-to-channel (CTC)
  • OSA-2 adapter card
  • 3172 control-unit
You can specify one or more of these connections, depending on your setup. Configure one port as either an OSA-2 adapter card or a 3172 control unit for the TCP/IP Passthru mode.

Auto UNIX System also comes pre-configured for a VTAM (R) (APPC) connection. You can use a VTAM (APPC) connection via CTC to VM or VSE.

Software Requirements: There are no additional host software requirements for Auto UNIX System. All software required to implement Auto UNIX System functions is included in your Auto UNIX System. An OS/390 base license is a prerequisite for ordering Auto UNIX System. (Customers may have the ability to replace OS/390 base functions with a commercially available product which provides similar functions. Contact an IBM representative for qualification and pricing information. All OS/390 integrated testing results and performance claims will be voided with such replacement.)

Control Center Requirements: The Auto UNIX System installation program runs on the Control Center, so you must set up the Control Center before you install Auto UNIX System.

The following sections show the requirements for running the Control Center on either:

  • The hardware management console (HMC)
  • A standalone support element (SA-SE)
  • An OS/2 workstation
HMC and SA-SE: An HMC or SA-SE can only be used for running the Control Center when Auto UNIX System is in an LPAR or standalone environment. An HMC or SA-SE is not supported for running the Control Center as a VM/ESA guest system. In the VM environment, Auto UNIX System requires an OS/2 workstation.

A service level of at least A0C is required to run the Control Center. Before using the Control Center on an HMC or SA-SE, you must perform some configuration and customization.

OS/2 Workstation: Using a Personal Computer to run the Control Center requires OS/2 Warp Release 4 or higher, Personal Communication/3270 4.1 or higher. To set up the Control Center on an OS/2 workstation for a standalone environment, you need to attach the workstation through a local non-SNA 3174 control unit, and configure a 3270 terminal emulation. The set up for a VM guest environment requires the configuration of 2 VM emulator sessions through Personal Communication/3270.

Limitations: Auto UNIX System provides an automated OS/390 UNIX Systems Services environment running native in an LPAR or as a VM/ESA Guest system. In this capacity, Auto UNIX System runs as an automated UNIX Systems Services server and not as a traditional OS/390 system. For instance, it will not run OS/390 Batch, IMS (TM), CICS (R), TSO, host print workloads or exploit Parallel Sysplex (R) technology. Tape Units accessible from Auto UNIX System are limited to one IBM 3480, 3490, or 4-mm DAT.

User Group Requirements: This announcement partially addresses five capabilities requested for VSE by providing a single platform S/390 solution for requirements from one or more of the worldwide user group communities, which include Australasian SHARE/GUIDE (ASG), COMMON, COMMON Europe, GUIDE International, G.U.I.D.E. Europe, Japan GUIDE/SHARE (JGS), Guide Latin American (LAG), SHARE EUROPE, and SHARE Incorporated. Requirements satisfied or partially satisfied include:

  • REQ00061969 -- Java support for VSE

  • REQ00066165 -- C++ support in VSE/ESA

  • CUST97009 -- Network Station support for standalone VSE

  • REQ00066159 -- VSE/ESA Open-Edition functionality

  • WV1997R001 -- Need VSE version of Open Edition

In some cases, where PD/PSI requires OS/390 system programmer skills, the FEST can remotely access the customers' Auto UNIX System to perform PD/PSI on the customers' behalf.
