NEW OR ENHANCED FOR VERSION 4 RELEASE 3 BASEPAK

Directory Services

Within OS/400, Directory Services supports LDAP. LDAP is a simple TCP/IP-based directory access protocol. An LDAP-accessible directory server and corresponding APIs communicate with other LDAP directory servers. LDAP-enabled applications, such as Internet mail clients, can access, update, and manage the AS/400 directory.

Digital Certificate Manager

The Digital Certificate Manager creates client certificates for Web browsers enabling Web sites to be accessed securely without a user ID and password. Digital Certificate Manager also manages all server certificates necessary to use SSL for encrypted TCP/IP sessions.

NetQuestion for AS/400

NetQuestion is a powerful, full-text search engine used to build a global WWW search service or a centralized intranet search service. It is designed and optimized to handle the large amounts of information typically stored on Web sites. NetQuestion features:

  • Full-text search
  • Support for free-text search and full-spectrum Boolean search logic, proximity search, and front-, middle-, and end-masking of search terms
  • Compact index of approximately 35% to 40% of the document size
  • Spellcheck and alternative word spelling

IBM HTTP Server for AS/400

IBM HTTP Server for AS/400 allows AS/400 systems attached to a TCP/IP network to provide objects at the request of any local or remote Web browser. Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) documents, index (directory) files, plain text, video, Java, graphics, and audio objects can be served from AS/400 file systems.

Euro Currency Sign Support

BasePak V4R3 supports euro.

Euro support will be provided on V4R1 and V4R2 by December 31, 1998. The euro function for these releases will require PTFs. Obtain the PTFs by contacting your IBM representative.

For the latest available information and a roadmap to euro currency sign support on the AS/400, access:

Security Wizard

Security Wizard, an Operations Navigator tool, asks high-level questions about your AS/400 system and then recommends how to configure base system security.

Management Central

Immediate and up-to-the-minute performance information about systems being managed. Administrators or operators with multiple systems and networks can easily gather, analyze, and react to this information. System groups let you control and monitor multiple AS/400 systems in your network from a central AS/400 server. You can monitor:

  • CPU utilization (average, interactive)
  • Interactive response time
  • Batch logical I/O
  • Transaction rates
  • Disk space utilization
  • Communications and disk IOPs
  • Communications lines
  • LANs
  • Disk arm utilization
  • Machine pool faulting rates (maximum only)
  • Base/user pool faulting rates
  • CPU utilization (Lite) (average only)
With real-time graphical performance monitoring you can:
  • Monitor multiple systems or groups
  • Establish thresholds for each monitor
  • Automatically execute programs/actions on threshold events
  • View threshold events

Operations Console

The AS/400 supports a new directly attached, full-function 5250 PC console that includes a graphical control panel application. The user interface of the control panel application resembles its hardware counterpart. The console and control panel applications can be used together or separately. Each requires direct cable attachment to an AS/400 system. Each six-meter cable must be purchased separately from IBM for the AS/400 model being used.

The direct-attach console can also serve as a gateway for a dial-in remote console. The remote console can also be configured to run the 5250 emulator application and/or the graphical control panel application. Both applications enable you to perform system operations tasks, for example, backup and recovery, with the AS/400 systems and the operations staff in physically separate locations. The connection between the remote and direct-attach console uses Windows dial-up networking (PPP) with the direct-attach console employing Windows NT (R) Remote Access Service (RAS) for access.

The applications are included on the Operations Navigator CD-ROM shipped with OS/400 V4R3. They are installed and used from PCs using the Windows NT Workstation 4.0 (required for the direct-attach console when it serves as a remote console gateway). OS/400 V4R3 is always required for direct/remote 5250 console attachment. The control panel application functions stand-alone with any AS/400 Advanced Series or e-Series system.

Client Access for Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0

The Client Access for Windows 95/NT client now supports running Microsoft (TM) Windows 98 operating system.

Full-function AFP (TM) Workbench Viewer Now Included

The 32-bit full-function AFP Workbench viewer is included with no additional purchase needed. The Viewer can display PC information stored in AS/400 spooled files. It can also be used to view image files on your PC.

Firewall for AS/400

IBM Firewall for AS/400 enables an Integrated PC Server to function as a firewall. It helps you protect your network:

  • Authorized users can move through the firewall to the unsecured network (Internet) while keeping unauthorized users from crossing the firewall into the secured network.

  • The outside world cannot see the structure of your network.

  • Mail flows in and out of your secure network while hiding the network address.
There are many ways to implement firewalls, dependent on your network structure and security requirements. IBM recommends that you develop firewall skills through IBM Education and Training courses or use the services of a qualified firewall installer. For information on IBM Firewall for AS/400 implementation, education, and services, visit: http://www.as400.ibm.com/firewall

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Specified Operating Environment

Hardware Requirements: AS/400e server 150

Refer to Hardware Announcement 198-024 dated February 10, 1998.

If you have a new V4R3 system, ensure the free DASD space is large enough to install all your application programs and data files and run your programs.

The preloaded functions of BasePak take 2.4 GB of DASD space. You can load the optional items of BasePak using the licensed program installation menu. These will require 0.4 GB of DASD space if all functions are loaded. When you do this, you must add the size of the added functions to the amount of DASD space occupied by BasePak so that you can calculate the remaining DASD space available for your applications and data.

At least 500 MB of free DASD space is required to upgrade AS/400 Licensed Internal Code and OS/400 from V3R7, V4R1. or V4R2 to V4R3. To upgrade to V4R3, check the amount of free space available using the Work with System Status command (WRKSYSSTS). If you have less than 500 MB of free space available, increase your free space to 500 MB by deleting unneeded programs and files (after saving them on tape) or by adding more DASD to your system, before upgrading.

For V4R3 sizing information, visit:

Software Requirements
  • V4R3 products require V4R3 BasePak (5649-EP4).

  • V4R3 BasePak (5649-EP4) will be preloaded and shipped when hardware feature #0391, #0392, #0393, or #0394 is ordered.

  • 5649-EP4 is not ordered with a preloaded system unless a DBCS NLV is selected.

  • For assistance in installing and using 5649-FW3 (Firewall for AS/400), access:
  • Application Program Driver
    • AS/400 Client Access Family for Windows
      • Enhanced Windows 3.1 Client
      • Windows 95/NT Client
      or
    • AS/400 Client Access Family
      • Windows 3.1 Client
      • Optimized OS/2 Client
Compatibility: To use the new Management Central capabilities, the other AS/400 systems in your network will require a PRPQ, if they are not running V4R3. The PRPQ is P84246 (5799-QGY) for systems running V3R2 and P84276 (5799-FRD) for systems running V3R6 through V4R2.
