Overview

ADSMConnect Agent for Oracle Backup on Windows NT (R), Version 2.1, which runs on Windows NT 4.0, lets customers with Oracle Enterprise Backup Utility (EBU) for Oracle7 and Oracle7 Parallel Server, or Oracle8 Recovery Manager (RMAN) for Oracle8 and Oracle8 Parallel Server take advantage of the storage management capabilities of any of the ADSTAR (R) Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM) Version 2 or Version 3 server platforms. Oracle7 EBU or Oracle8 RMAN performs online and offline backup and restore of Oracle databases. After Oracle EBU or Oracle RMAN initiates a backup or restore, ADSMConnect Agent for Oracle Backup on Windows NT acts as the interface to ADSM. The ADSM server then applies its storage management functions to the data, which can be carried on while users are working, with minimal disruption.

ADSMConnect Agent for Oracle Backup on Windows NT benefits from the highly automated, centrally scheduled, policy-managed backup and restore facilities of ADSM to help protect data. The data may be stored on a wide variety of storage devices. Together, ADSMConnect Agent for Oracle Backup on Windows NT and ADSM can help manage the costs associated with distributed storage management by leveraging storage resources and automating management tasks.

To let you experience the powerful functions of ADSMConnect Agent for Oracle Backup on Windows NT, IBM plans to offer a free 60-day evaluation (try and buy). Accessible from the ADSM Web site, the try and buy lets you evaluate the code and documentation for 60 days. After the 60-day evaluation period expires, the try and buy cannot be extended. To continue using the ADSMConnect Agent for Oracle Backup on Windows NT, you must order the product. In addition to this Agent, you may download other ADSMConnect Agent try and buys from the ADSM Web site. The ADSM Web site is located at:

DESCRIPTION

ADSMConnect Agent for Oracle Backup on Windows NT is an application interface that enables the connection between Oracle7 Enterprise Backup Utility or Oracle8 Recovery Manager (RMAN) on Windows NT, and any ADSM Version 2 or Version 3 server. The application uses the ADSM API. Oracle8 is currently supported only with single threading.

Oracle EBU or Oracle RMAN on Windows NT can perform:

  • Full backup of a database while it is online or offline

  • Tablespace or data file backups while database is online

  • Backup of redo logs (simulated incremental) while online

  • Full database restore while it is offline

  • Tablespace or data file or archive log restores while online
In addition, Oracle RMAN provides true incremental backup while online.

After Oracle EBU or Oracle RMAN initiates the backup or restore, ADSMConnect Agent for Oracle Backup on Windows NT acts as the interface so that the ADSM server can apply its storage management functions to this data. The ADSM server's capabilities include:

  • Access to a storage hierarchy

  • Migration (server Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM)) through the storage hierarchy

  • Management of tape media space

  • Central scheduling and automation of your environment

  • Disaster recovery support including off-site management of tapes
During the operation of ADSMConnect Agent for Oracle Backup on Windows NT, the ADSM server manages the location of every object and manages the devices.
