Overview

The ADSMConnect Agent for Microsoft (R) Exchange Server, Version 1.1, referred to from now on as ADSMConnect Exchange Agent, helps you protect your Microsoft (MS) Exchange Server databases using the storage management capabilities of any of the ADSTAR (R) Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM) Version 2 or Version 3 server platforms.

The ADSMConnect Exchange Agent acts as the interface between a Microsoft Exchange Server and an ADSM server. Using the ADSMConnect Exchange Agent, you can perform online backup of MS Exchange databases and transaction logs (for both the directory and information store) to an ADSM server. The ADSM server applies its storage management functions to the data, which can be carried on while you are working, with minimal disruption. These functions include migration through a storage hierarchy, management of tape media space, and disaster recovery support. MS Exchange database restores take place while the MS Exchange server is offline.

The benefits provided by the highly automated, centrally scheduled, policy managed backup and restore facilities of ADSM are utilized by the ADSMConnect Exchange Agent for the protection of data. The data may be stored on a wide variety of storage devices. Together, the ADSMConnect Exchange Agent and ADSM can help manage the costs associated with distributed storage management by leveraging storage resources and automating management tasks.

To let you experience the powerful functions of ADSMConnect Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server, IBM plans to offer a free 60-day evaluation (try and buy). Accessible from the ADSM Web site, the try and buy lets you evaluate the code and documentation for 60 days. After the 60-day evaluation period expires, the try and buy cannot be extended. To continue using the ADSMConnect Exchange Agent, you must order the product. In addition to this Agent, you may download other ADSMConnect Agent try and buys from the ADSM Web site. The ADSM Web site is located at:

The ADSMConnect Exchange Agent is another in a series of agents to provide the storage management capabilities of ADSM for a variety of data formats. The ADSMConnect Exchange Agent requires an ADSM server at Version 2 or Version 3. The ADSM server platforms that are currently supported at the Version 2 level are AIX (R), OS/2 (R), Windows NT (TM), VM, MVS (R) or OS/390 (TM), AS/400 (R), Hewlett-Packard HP-UX, and Sun Solaris. The ADSM server platforms that are currently supported at the Version 3 level are AIX, Windows NT, MVS or OS/390, HP-UX, and Sun Solaris.

DESCRIPTION

The ADSMConnect Exchange Agent helps you protect your MS Exchange Server databases by using the backup and recovery services of ADSM. The ADSMConnect Exchange Agent acts as an interface between MS Exchange Server and ADSM by using the Exchange backup and restore Application Program Interfaces (API) to communicate with MS Exchange Server, and the ADSM API to communicate with any ADSM Version 2 or Version 3 server.

The ADSMConnect Exchange Agent performs backups and restores of MS Exchange Server databases running on the local machine. The ADSMConnect Exchange Agent includes a command line and Graphical User Interface (GUI).

The ADSMConnect Exchange Agent's capabilities include:

  • Online backup of the Directory and Information Store

  • Support for Full, Copy, Incremental and Differential backups

  • Ability to restore public and private sections of the Information Store separately

  • Easy access to multiple ADSM servers through the GUI (if multiple ADSM servers exist in your network)

  • Use of the ADSM scheduler to initiate the Agent so that Exchange database backups can be done automatically and at a convenient (low usage) time
Once data has been stored on an ADSM server, the ADSM server can apply its storage management functions to this data.

The ADSM server's capabilities include:

  • Access to a storage hierarchy

  • Migration (server Hierarchical Storage Management or HSM) through the storage hierarchy

  • Management of tape media space

  • Central scheduling and automation of your environment

  • Disaster recovery support including off-site management of tapes

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the 20th and 21st centuries, provided all other products (for example, software, hardware, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

ADSMConnect Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server enables customers with MS Exchange Server databases to take advantage of the key storage management functions of ADSM. MS Exchange Server administrators can also take advantage of ADSM's best of breed scalability, server hierarchical storage management and powerful disaster recovery functions without disrupting the daily user activities.
