Overview
The ADSMConnect Agent for Microsoft (R) Structured Query Language (SQL) Server, Version 1.1, referred to from now on as ADSMConnect SQL Agent, lets you protect your Microsoft SQL Server databases using the storage management capabilities of any of the ADSTAR (R) Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM) Version 2 or Version 3 server platforms.
The ADSMConnect SQL Agent acts as the interface between a Microsoft (MS) SQL server and an ADSM server. Using the ADSMConnect SQL Agent, you can perform online full or incremental database backups to an ADSM server. The ADSM server then applies its storage management functions to the data, which can be carried on while you are working, with minimal disruption. These functions include migration through a storage hierarchy, management of tape media space, and disaster recovery support.
The benefits provided by the highly automated, centrally scheduled, policy managed backup and restore facilities of ADSM are utilized by the ADSMConnect SQL Agent for the protection of data. The data may be stored on a wide variety of storage devices. Together, the ADSMConnect SQL Agent and ADSM can help manage the costs associated with distributed storage management by leveraging storage resources and automating management tasks.
To let you experience the powerful functions of ADSMConnect Agent for Microsoft SQL Server, IBM plans to offer a 60-day Try and Buy program. Accessible from the ADSM Web site, the Try and Buy program lets you evaluate the code and documentation for 60 days. After the 60-day evaluation period expires, Try and Buy cannot be extended. To continue using the ADSMConnect Agent for Microsoft SQL Server, you must order the product. In addition to this Agent, you may download other ADSMConnect Agent Try and Buys from the ADSM Web site. The ADSM Web site is located at:
The ADSMConnect SQL Agent is another in a series of agents to provide the storage management capabilities of ADSM for a variety of formats of data. The ADSMConnect SQL Agent requires an ADSM server at Version 2 or Version 3. The ADSM server platforms that are currently supported at the Version 2 level are AIX (R), OS/2 (R), Windows NT (TM), VM, MVS (R), AS/400 (R), Hewlett-Packard HP-UX, and Sun Solaris. The ADSM server platforms that are currently supported at the Version 3 level are AIX, Windows NT and MVS.

The ADSMConnect SQL Agent helps you protect your MS SQL Server databases by using the backup and recovery services of ADSM. The ADSMConnect SQL Agent acts as an interface between MS SQL Server and ADSM by using the SQL DB-Library API to communicate with MS SQL Server, and the ADSM API to communicate with any ADSM Version 2 or Version 3 server.
The ADSMConnect SQL Agent performs backups and restores of MS SQL Server databases running on the local machine. The ADSMConnect SQL Agent includes a command line and Graphical User Interface (GUI). The ADSMConnect SQL Agent's capabilities:
- Multiple instances of the ADSMConnect SQL Agent can be run for
added performance when backing multiple MS SQL Server databases on
the same machine.
- The use of the ADSM scheduler to schedule the SQL database backup
at a time of low usage, minimizes the impact of the backup.
- The GUI displays all of the MS SQL Server databases on a given machine as well as ADSM servers to which the SQL Agent has access. To perform backup, the user chooses a database and an ADSM server and then initiates the operation. This means that you can easily select any MS SQL Server database to backup or restore with any ADSM server on your network.
- Access to a storage hierarchy
- Migration (server Hierarchical Storage Management or HSM) through
the storage hierarchy
- Management of tape media space
- Central scheduling and automation of your environment
- Disaster recovery support including off-site management of tapes
