| Description |
IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data
IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data is designed to provide a comprehensive storage resource management (SRM) solution for storage resources across the enterprise. It can enable administrators to identify, manage, control, and predict storage usage. IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data can provide a set of tools that address multiple aspects of the storage infrastructure, including capacity, asset, event, and availability management.
Architected for efficiency and ease-of-use, IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data uses a single agent per server to provide detailed information without high consumption of network bandwidth or CPU cycles. IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data supports the most popular operating systems, including Windows, Solaris, AIX®, HP-UX, NetWare, and Linux, and also supports the metadata repository in your choice of databases: Oracle, MS SQL Server, DB2®/UDB, and Sybase. Refer to the Hardware and software requirements section for more specific information on supported versions.
Reporting
IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data provides over 300 reports that can enable you to have a detailed or summary view of your networked storage assets enterprise-wide or by age, operating system, computer, file system, computer, computer group, and/or user. You can easily forecast based on actual usage. Whether you're viewing usage information enterprise-wide, by computer, by instance, or by user, you can graph usage trends and forecast future usage based on historical data. IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data can enable you to generate reports and graphs, in batch mode, selecting specific reports to run enterprise-wide, or by computer. Report output can also be exported into many other applications. IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data provides historical trending information of enterprise-wide storage information. Through reporting, a user can identify and reclaim wasted space by identifying files that may not be needed, such as duplicate files, obsolete files, or orphan files. IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data can provide the information needed to understand and optimize storage usage throughout an organization, so that the organization is effectively using the storage it has.
Policy-based management
IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data can enable you to define and enforce storage policies through user-defined alerts, quotas, and constraints, notifying the user via e-mail, pager, or the event log, or a systems management console for events such as when a quota has been exceeded or a constraint violated. However, we know that finding a problem is not enough. You need a way to find and fix problems or potential problems as they are discovered. IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data can provide automated solutions through event management. Alerts, quotas that have been exceeded, or constraints that have been violated can result in notification or action, enabling the user to fix or even prevent storage outages. For example, if IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data discovers data that has not been accessed in more than a year, it can trigger Tivoli Storage Manager or another archive utility.
Sample policy-based triggers:
- Free space falls below a user-defined value
- Discovery of a file that isn't backed up
- Storage usage exceeds a user-defined value
- A file that has not been accessed in a user-defined length of time has been discovered
- A storage resource is added or removed from the network
Archive, backup, or provision using any tools
IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data can enable organizations to use many third-party tools for actions such as archiving, backup, or provisioning helping to make the tools the enterprise already has more effective. Actions are defined in scripts that are passed relevant parameters (such as computer name, user name, usage violation) by IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data at execution time. The user chooses the trigger and defines the corresponding action. For example, the user can also define actions to backup critical data. If IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data finds a file that has not been backed up, it can trigger a back up job, using Tivoli Storage Manager or a third-party backup tool the user already has. If the user has chosen Tivoli Storage Manager as the backup-archive application, the user can use IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data to create backup-archive related reports and invoke Tivoli Storage Manager functions directly to execute the backup-archive process. For example, if a user no longer works for your area, you can archive their files by simply creating a report filtering on the user name and invoking the Tivoli Storage Manager archive function.
Automatic file system extension
IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data automated file system extension capability can allow the user to specify a policy to automatically extend a file system when a threshold has been reached. For example, if a file system's threshold is set at 78% and, through monitoring, IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data identifies that this threshold has been exceeded, it can automatically initiate a file system extension to reduce the possibility of a storage-related outage. The feature supports both manual and automated initiated extension. Once you are comfortable with the manual process, you can turn over all the steps to IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data. The policy is set through a File System Extension Policy Panel. A probe will run on Agents and send file system statistics to the server. The server will compare the current file system stats against the policy, and invoke provisioning and extension as necessary.
File sweep
With this feature, IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data can automatically invoke Tivoli Storage Manager to archive and delete files. This can free up space in a file system and can allow you to more effectively manage storage utilization. For example, a policy can be created to archive all files over 365 days old to tape via IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, and then delete the files to free up the disk space.
Subsystem reporting
IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data gathers and reports on disk subsystems. Information includes physical characteristics such as the drive's manufacturer, model, serial number, capacity, and rotational speed. Also included is how that drive's storage is allocated to logical volumes, snapshot copy volumes, and free space. This feature will allow users to perform the following (subject to vendor's implementation of Storage Management Initiative Specification [SMI-S]):
- Display the physical disks behind what the host sees as a disk drive
- Show the allocated and free capacity of subsystems on the network
- List subsystem volumes that have been allocated but aren't in use
- Show which hosts have access to a given subsystem volume
- Show which hosts have access to a given disk drive (within the subsystem)
- Show which subsystem volumes (and disks) a host has access to
IBM SAN Volume Controller reporting
IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data's general subsystem reporting is extended to provide support for IBM SAN Volume Controller reporting:
- Provides a subsystem view of allocated and free space
- Provides a view of storage from host perspective
- Maintains a view of logical and physical drives
- Maintains a historical view of allocated and free capacity
- Allows grouping of subsystems
Reporting for IBM SAN File System implementation
IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data can help identify environments where IBM TotalStorage SAN File System implementation may be appropriate. It does this by utilizing network-wide statistics to show metrics including, but not limited to, temp space, duplicate file data, and storage utilization by disk and/or file systems, to help plan for IBM SAN File System implementation. IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data can help create an inventory of assets, offers suggestions for policies, and helps you plan for implementation.
NAS support
According to industry analysts, demand for network-attached Storage (NAS) appliances is expected to grow rapidly over the next several years. As the demand for network storage increases, the need for an effective way to manage that storage and its related costs increases. IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data can enable storage administrators to monitor, report on, and manage NAS resources. IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data is designed to provide organizations with a universal view of direct-attached and network-attached storage, from a filesystem or application perspective. For Network Appliance filers, IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data will monitor, report on, and manage physical disk information such as total disk capacity and disk usage information. By providing this information as part of a universal view of enterprise storage, storage administrators can manage storage from a logical (filesystem) perspective as well as a physical (disk) perspective. Administrators can also view information for a single filer, a group of filers, a user or group of users, or all filers enterprise-wide, enabling them to manage all enterprise storage resources from a single Web-based interface, to help them reduce costs and increase availability by pinpointing and solving problems more effectively.
Tivoli TEC integration
Representing integration with Tivoli Systems Management solutions, IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data can use the Event Integration Facility (EIF) to send messages to the Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC). This can allow TEC to consider IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data alerts in causal analysis for problems. TEC will be added as a destination for alerts, in addition to SNMP Trap, Windows Event Log, and so forth.
What's new in V2.1
Files by type reporting This feature collects information on and reports on files by the file type (extension) so that you can see what kind of capacity is being utilized by files of each type (that is, .JPEG, .GIF, .HTML, .MPEG). The reports will be very similar to the existing User Space Usage reports. If users choose to gather file type information with history, they will be able to produce graphs showing the space used (and number of files) by each file type.
Push button integration with Tivoli Storage Manager This feature includes two points of integration between Productivity Center for Data and Tivoli Storage Manager.
- The definition of a constraint is extended to allow users to request a Tivoli Storage Manager archive or backup of the N largest violating files. A constraint lets users define acceptable and unacceptable uses of storage. For example, a constraint might be defined to prohibit the storage of MP3 files on a file server. Productivity Center for Data currently reports on the N largest of the files which violate the constraint (where N is configured by the user). This integration point lets users configure the constraint to automatically perform a Tivoli Storage Manager archive or backup of these violating files.
- The file reports are modified to allow users to archive or back up selected files directly from the reports. These file reports can identify, for example, a filesystem's largest files, orphaned files, and duplicate files. A storage administrator might use this feature to quickly free up storage by archiving and deleting selected files.
Both integration points can provide support for:
- Tivoli Storage Manager archive with the option of deleting the file after successful archive
- Tivoli Storage Manager incremental and selective backups
The results of the Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive commands are viewable thru the GUI. In the case of constraints configured to archive-backup violating files, the results are included in the agent scan job logs (scans are responsible for enforcing constraints). In the case of file report driven archive-backup operations, a new type of job (archive-backup job) is created. The results of the backup operations in this case are found in archive-backup job logs.
Batch reporting of charts The batch reporting facility is enhanced to support the generation of graphs. The batch reporting facility can allow users to generate reports unattended, on a regularly scheduled basis. This enhancement can allow users to configure a batch reporting job to optionally generate graphs in either HTML or PDF format.
Export agent list with status The feature creates a new report for "Agent status." The output will be a tabular report. The data can be exported using existing techniques.
Save chart customizations This feature provides an option for customizing charts. These customizations are saved on a per chart and per user basis. For each report type, there can be several charts, each of these charts allow for a different customization. Options include the type of chart to display (pie, bar, stacked bar, 100% stacked bar, plot); if data labels should be displayed always or only when the mouse is on the data point (dwell labels); and the number of data series to be displayed on a page (number of pie charts or number of sets of data on a bar chart).
Move agent to Common Endpoint (common agent) This feature ports the Productivity Center for Data agent to Common Endpoint services. When the Productivity Center for Data is installed, it will give the user a choice between using an existing Endpoint Manager or installing a new Endpoint Manager. Usage of only one Endpoint Manager will be supported. If Productivity Center for Data component agent is the first Tivoli product to be installed on a machine, it will prompt for the location of the Endpoint Manager, install the endpoint infrastructure, and then register itself as a subagent. If an instance of the common endpoint already exists, an option will be provided to the user to either register the Productivity Center for Data subagent with the existing instance or install a new instance.
Automated remote install This new feature supports a push install of agents to remote UNIX® machines.
Pkgadd install for UNIX agents On Solaris systems, the Data Component is installed using the Pkgadd facility. The package resides on the CD and can be copied and executed easily. There are parameters that are currently supplied to the command line install that customize the install (server name, ports, and other options). You can supply these parameters from outside of the package, without using an interactive script.
Additional platform support Additional server and agent platform support includes Red Hat Linux 3.0, SUSE Linux 9, AIX 5.3, and Windows 2003.
IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Fabric
IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Fabric can provide SAN management capabilities by performing a SAN topology discovery and rendering of the components and storage resources across the SAN. This discovery is done through a combination of both in-band (through the SAN network itself) and out-band (using Simple Network Management Protocol [SNMP] and Brocade API capabilities through TCP/IP discovery mechanisms), and then correlating the results. SAN management capabilities focus on:
-
Utilization of storage industry-standard discovery techniques including:
- SCSI commands
- SNMP FC Management Information Base (MIB)
-
Fiber channel management standards such as:
- Extended link services including Request Node Identification (RNID)
- Name server queries
- Management server queries
- Selected vendor-specific interfaces including Brocade's Application Program Interface (API)
These capabilities can allow support of vendor products that support legacy SCSI commands and the newer Fibre Channel SAN management industry standard.
SANs are used to connect systems to storage devices. It is imperative in this type of environment to confirm that the intended connections between systems and storage devices are established and unintended connections do not exist. IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Fabric allows you to easily view and monitor the physical connectivity of devices and the zone configurations that enable access over the physical network.
Predictive error detection (ED) and fault isolation (FI)
The ED and FI function in IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Fabric monitors the links in a fabric for indications that a failure is imminent and then analyzes the links in the related areas of the fabric to isolate the problem to a particular device. This helps the user to perform pre-emptive maintenance during a maintenance window as opposed to experiencing an outage that would cause downtime.
Zone control
The new zone control feature allows zones to be created and zone sets to be maintained on supported switches that adhere to the T11 FC-GS3/4 standard (Fibre Channel Generic Service). Brocade proprietary zoning is also supported. For more information on switch vendors' standards compliance, visit
iSCSI support
IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Fabric can provide basic support for iSCSI device discovery and monitoring via NetView®.
Integration with systems management solutions
This includes Tivoli Enterprise Console® (TEC) event filtering for the SAN administrator that can allow a simple mechanism to filter events that get issued by IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Fabric. SNMP alerts and TEC events are supported. In addition, further integration with Tivoli Data Warehouse enables Tivoli Service Level Advisor to incorporate LUN availability as part of their service level agreements.
Cisco MDS support
IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Fabric can allow viewing of Cisco's VSAN (Virtual SAN) concept by inserting a new level for VSANs in the topology viewing hierarchy.
What's new in V2.1
Event Driven Status Update This feature helps improve Productivity Center for Fabric's responsiveness to SAN events. With this new feature, Productivity Center for Fabric can perform an isolated rediscovery of only the SAN or SANs pertaining to SAN events as they come in. This isolated rediscovery can also update connection, switch and/or device status immediately in the SAN NetView topology.
Clear History Granularity This feature can allow finer, more granular control over the removal of missing devices by the Clear History function. The ability to remove missing devices from multiple screens can be accommodated with the Clear History menu item and a secondary dialog which can allow the user to identify which missing entities are removed. Delete can delete the corresponding "missing" entities under the object on the console.
Move agent to Common Endpoint (common agent) This feature can enable the Productivity Center for Fabric agent to leverage Common Endpoint services. When the Productivity Center for Fabric is installed, it will prompt the user to use an existing Endpoint Manager or install a new Endpoint Manager. Usage of only one Endpoint Manager will be supported. If Productivity Center for Fabric Component agent is the first Tivoli product to be installed on a machine, it will prompt for the location of the Endpoint Manager, install the endpoint infrastructure, and then register itself as a subagent. If an instance of the common endpoint already exists, an option will be provided to the user to either register the Productivity Center for Fabric subagent with the existing instance or install a new instance.
Autozoning Enablement and API enhancements Productivity Center for Fabric API's are enhanced in order to further support TotalStorage Productivity Center with advanced provisioning workflows (via Tivoli Provisioning Manager) for policy-based autozoning.
Enhanced Cisco Zone Control Support The feature can enable secure zoning of Cisco MDS 9000 devices with Cisco's unique zoning implementation.
Additional platform support Additional server and agent platform support includes support for Red Hat Linux 3 and AIX 5.3.

Software Maintenance
This software license includes Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical Support.
Order the program number, feature number, and quantity to extend coverage for your software licenses. If maintenance has expired, specify the after license feature number.
Software Maintenance has three forms:
- A No-Charge Registration feature number for one year of Software Maintenance, designated with each new license or additional order under the One-Year Software Maintenance program ID.
- A Renewal feature number, used to renew maintenance while coverage is still current. For continuous Software Maintenance, Renewal features must be ordered prior to expiration of the original registration term of the product purchased (prior to one year from original purchase).
- An After License feature number, which is used to reinstate maintenance, if necessary, after the original registered coverage has lapsed. This feature is designated under the After License program ID.
Software Maintenance registration
Software Maintenance for one year is provided with each order, through One-Year Software Maintenance Registration features in AAS, under the Software Maintenance program ID for the licensed program.
For IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Disk and IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Replication, order Software Maintenance Registration corresponding to the maximum Licensed terabyte capacity level purchased.
If you increase your capacity levels for Productivity Center for Disk or Productivity Center for Replication, your Software Maintenance capacity must be increased to correspond with the new capacity levels, at the time of the increase order.

Warranty: This program has warranty for a minimum of one year from acquisition from IBM or authorized IBM Business Partner. Program technical support: Technical support of a program product will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. Customers will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

This fee service enhances customer productivity by providing voice and/or electronic access into the IBM support organizations.
IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option.
While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center.
