OverviewTo protect your vital system data, Tivoli® Data Protection for SAP R/3, Version 2.7 with its feature, Administration Tools, works directly with Tivoli Storage Manager to provide data storage management, as well as data backup and recovery. This new release offers a new Operations Monitor, new functions to simplify startup configuration, and extends support to the Windows™ 2000 and Linux platforms. This powerful solution enables enterprises using SAP R/3 to more efficiently backup, protect, and manage the large volumes of enterprise and production data. Version 2.7 adds the power of adaptive sequencing and multiple thread processing to this product to provide enhanced performance. Self-healing capabilities provide enhanced availability. When your enterprise utilizes Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 as the intelligent interface to SAP R/3 and Tivoli Storage Manager for data management, you can automate storage management functions. Specifically, Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 uses Tivoli Storage Manager's data management capabilities and features to interface directly with SAP R/3's familiar utilities and interfaces for consistent and reliable storage management. In addition to data backup and recovery for one SAP R/3 server or multiple systems, Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 offers disaster recovery and data replication on an enterprise level. Tivoli's solution with Tivoli Storage Manager as the storage manager and Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 as the intelligent interface to SAP R/3, is the leading offering among "external backup utilities" for SAP R/3. It allows for lights-out production operation, with high performance, to minimize downtimes and improve adaptability to dynamic changes of requirements. The solution also supports cloning, disaster recovery, as well as standby and self-healing concepts for high availability. Key PrerequisitesA Tivoli Storage Manager Version 3.7 server running with AIX®, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Tru64 UNIX, Windows NT™, Windows 2000, or Linux and SAP R/3. Planned Availability DateDescriptionTivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 is an intelligent interface program which seamlessly connects the SAP R/3 database administration utilities SAP DBA (Oracle) with Tivoli Storage Manager. Tivoli Storage Manager and Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 provide a cost-effective, high-performance solution for backup/restore of SAP R/3 systems with an Oracle database. This solution enables SAP R/3 customers to meet the key business requirements for protecting their vital data on the basis of a reliable and SAP-certified, proven solution. Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 has an optional priced feature, Administration Tools , that provides the capability for customization and performance monitoring of Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3. It can be used free for 60 days during initial set-up. For production use beyond the 60 days, a registration string will be supplied on a CD-ROM, if the feature is licensed. Administration Tools consists of a "Tools Server" that collects data/files from multiple Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 instances, and "Tools Clients," that provide the administrator's interface. One license is required per Tools server. Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 with Tivoli Storage Manager provides reliable and reproducible operation procedures so that system administrators can manage large volumes of data more efficiently. It enables SAP R/3 administrators to backup or restore SAP R/3 through the accustomed interfaces and functions of SAP DBA while using all the professional automated data management capabilities of Tivoli Storage Manager. Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 is THE leading "external" solution for SAP R/3 data protection. Version 2.7 adds the following functions: Operations Monitor A new utility, the Operations Monitor, has been added to the Administration Tools. As single point of control, it collects data from all monitored SAP systems (locally or remote) and graphically displays their backup status to the database and system administrator in one comprehensive overview. Thus, system administrators get relieved from repetitive tasks and can concentrate on failure-free backups. Jeopardized systems are recognized immediately. The risk of non-detected backup failures is minimized. For individual systems, the Operations Monitor keeps the history of backup and restore jobs. This provides information for tracking of critical parameters and for planning purposes. New Configuration Startup Set The configurator now provides additional functions to easily initialize a configuration startup set. The user will be guided through a step by step procedure to set all necessary configuration parameters. Default values are proposed and the user may change these standard settings according to his environment. Enhanced Platform Support Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 now supports Windows 2000 and Red Hat Linux 6.1EE. Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3, V2.7 continues to offer these outstanding attributes: High Backup/Restore Data Rate Parallel Backup and Restore: Using native SAP utilities, Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 backs up and restores Oracle database objects that have been previously identified. These utilities pass the database objects, as a temporary list of files, to Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3. Then, Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 receives control with the parameters specified in its profile, sorts the files for optimum load balancing and throughput (comparable data rates for backup and restore), and initiates the specified number of multiple sessions. These sessions execute in parallel and transfer data between the SAP R/3 database and storage devices to maximize overall throughput. One storage device (tape drive) must be associated with each session based on the Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 return codes. The SAP DBA utilities BRBackup and BRArchive generate a log with all backed up files. This log is then used for the system-guided restore/recover process. Parallel Backup Paths: In order to reduce network-induced bottlenecks, Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 can simultaneously use multiple communication paths for data transfer with its Tivoli Storage Manager server. The number of sessions can be set individually for each path depending on its bandwidth. Parallel Backup Servers: Multiple Tivoli Storage Manager servers can also be used for backup and restore simultaneously to eliminate bottlenecks in server capacity. Each server is defined to Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 via a "server statement" in the profile. Availability Multiple Redo Log Copies: For availability reasons, you may wish to store multiple copies of the same Oracle redo log on different physical volumes. This feature is applicable only if there is more than one BRARCHIVE management class specified. Alternate Backup Paths: In order to improve the availability of the communication network between R/3 DB server and backup server, Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 can use alternate communication paths for data transfer with its Tivoli Storage Manager server. Alternate Backup Servers: If one server is down, backups/restores can be transferred to/from alternate backup servers with Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 V2. Disaster Recovery: Besides the Tivoli Storage Manager-specific functions for disaster recovery (copy storage pools), Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 V2 lets you electronically route disaster backups to a specific server at specified times. Retry: Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 can be set to do a predetermined number of retries in establishing a session with the Tivoli Storage Manager server. System/Storage Management Multiple Management Classes: The Tivoli Storage Manager manages storage using management classes. In order to direct specific backups to specific storage media and to take full advantage of the parallel backup and restore capabilities of Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3, one management class can be specified for each physical backup device (tape drive). Inquire: The inquire function enables queries to the Tivoli Storage Manager server for backup IDs and/or file names of backups currently stored within Tivoli Storage Manager server storage. This function is used by the SAP DBA utilities, but can also be invoked by the administrator from the Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 command line to list all backed up files. Backup by Version: This function lets you keep a specified number of database backup versions (table spaces and associated redo logs) in Tivoli Storage Manager backup storage independent of creation or expiration date. Password Handling: To protect the backup copies against unauthorized access, Tivoli Storage Manager provides password authentication. If the Tivoli Storage Manager administrator has activated authentication, the Tivoli Storage Manager client has to identify itself to the Tivoli Storage Manager server via a password. Only after successful password validation, can the client perform backup or restore operations. Front-end/Back-end Processing: Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 provides front-end and back-end processing capabilities. By using this feature, a program or command can be called prior to or after Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 execution. Network Management: Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 provides status information on the backup/restore process via SNMP traps. It is also enabled to send messages to the Tivoli Storage Manager server (Version 3) that in turn can pass status to a network management tool like Tivoli. Reporting: For statistical purposes, Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 provides information about the data volume transferred and the associated elapsed time. In addition, Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 reports which file is currently processed and calculates an estimated end time for the current backup or restore process. Seamless Integration With SAP R/3 Tivoli Data Protection for SAP R/3 supports all the functions of the BACKINT interface (SAP DBA to external storage management tool) specified by SAP, including the most current ones:
