Overview

You'll now have increased flexibility in attaching the Magstar® 3590 Tape Subsystem — which provides high performance, reliability, data integrity, and cartridge capacity — to your host system.

The features announced today provide increased flexibility for attaching the Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem in stand-alone and automated configurations. These features are evidence of our commitment to protect your investment in 3590 tape products. Feature numbers are now available to field merge the Magstar 3590 Model A60 Controller into a 3590 Model A14 Frame, 3590 Model C10 Silo Compatible Frame, or Magstar 3494 Tape Library Model D14 Drive Unit Frame. In addition, new feature numbers to field merge the Magstar 3590 Model A50 Controller into a 3590 Model A14 Frame or a 3590 Model C14 Silo Compatible Frame are now available. This allows you to replace a Model A50 Controller with the recently announced Model A60 Controller and reinstall the Model A50 in a new Model A14 or C14 frame.

Plus, we've changed the physical specifications of the Magstar 3590 Model A60 Controller from 10 EIA units to 8 EIA units. This allows up to four Magstar 3590 Model B11 or E11 Tape Drives, instead of only two, to now be installed with a Magstar 3590 Model A60 Controller in a standard 19-inch rack (such as the IBM 9309 Rack Enclosure Model 002, 7014 RS/6000® Rack Model S00, or 7015 RS/6000 System Rack Model R00).

Whether as a stand-alone tape subsystem or in an automated environment, the Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem provides a good technology base in your environment.

Key Prerequisites

The Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem is supported for attachment to AS/400®, RS/6000, S/390®, Sun, and Windows NT™ systems in stand-alone frames or in automated environments in a Magstar 3494 Tape Library and in a StorageTek 4410 or 9310 Automated Cartridge System (ACS). The appropriate attachment adapter and software are required, which may vary depending on the model of controller or tape drive attached.

Product Positioning

The Magstar 3590, IBM's highest-performance tape subsystem, provides high capacity and reliability for S/390, AS/400, RS/6000, and a variety of IBM and non-IBM UNIX® and Windows NT systems. It offers significant enhancements in performance, capacity, data integrity, reliability, and availability over IBM 3480, 3490, or 3490E tape drives. IBM provides the Magstar 3590 in a range of product offerings to meet a diverse set of customer requirements.

The Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem is designed for high-performance computing environments where high reliability, capacity, and performance are mandated. It should be considered in the following environments:

  • High-speed data save operations where backup windows are critical, and large amounts of data are archived to tape
  • Large-scale automated tape installations where performance, capacity, and reliability are requirements
  • Tape environments where:
    • Backup windows are growing and there is a need for higher-performance tape drives to back up larger amounts of data in less time
    • Space allocated to tape cartridges needs to be reduced within automation solutions or offline storage and you can utilize the cartridge capacity of the 3590
    • Read compatibility of existing 3590 data cartridges is critical
    • An IBM 3494 Tape Library is used
  • StorageTek ACS environments where higher capacity, performance, or reliability is needed

The Magstar 3590 offers configuration flexibility and long-range customer investment protection in its unique ability to be used, and re-used, in multiple storage solutions. Capitalizing on IBM's Seascape™ architecture, Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem components are storage assets that can be moved from storage solution to storage solution. Through features and model conversions, Magstar 3590 Tape Drives and Controllers can be transformed to fit into stand-alone subsystems (Model A14 or standard racks), StorageTek silos, or IBM 3494 automated solutions (including Magstar Virtual Tape Server). An initial investment in the Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem can grow with your ever-changing business requirements.

Hardware Requirements

Magstar 3590 Model A60 Controller

A new 3590 Model A60 from the plant can now be field merged into the following installed environments by specifying these feature numbers on the Model A60:

  • 9661 — Field merge a new 3590 Model A60 into an installed 3590 Model C10 Silo Compatible Frame
  • 9665 — Field merge a new 3590 Model A60 into an installed 3494 Model D14 Drive Unit Frame
  • 9668 — Field merge a new 3590 Model A60 into an installed 3590 Model A14 Frame

Magstar 3590 Model A14 Frame

A customer-supplied 3590 Model A50 or A60 Controller can now be field merged into a new 3590 Model A14 Frame from the plant by specifying these feature numbers on the Model A14:

  • 9658 — Field merge a customer-supplied 3590 Model A50 into a new 3590 Model A14 Frame
  • 9668 — Field merge a customer-supplied 3590 Model A60 into a new 3590 Model A14 Frame

Magstar 3590 Model C14 Silo Compatible Frame

A customer-supplied 3590 Model A50 Controller can now be field merged into a new 3590 Model C14 Frame from the plant by specifying these feature numbers on the Model C14:

  • 9651 — Field merge a customer-supplied 3590 Model A50 into a new 3590 Model C14 Silo Compatible Frame

Magstar 3494 Model D14 Drive Unit Frame

When installed in a 3494 Tape Library, the IBM 3590 Model A60 Controller can be attached to the library manager in the 3494 Model L10, L12, or L14, through an RS422 connection similar to the 3590 Model A50 Controller (by specifying #9061 on the 3494) or through the 3494 Attachment Concentrator feature number 5232 (by specifying #9060). When connected through the Attachment Concentrator, the Model A60 Controller does not require a tape control unit connection on the library manager. One of either feature number 9060 or 9061 must be specified on the 3494 Model D14 when a 3590 Model A60 is installed. One of feature number 9060 or 9061 must also be specified on the 3494 Model L10, L12, or L14 for each 3590 Model A60 installed in the 3494 Tape Library.

Note: If you are ordering an Attachment Concentrator feature number 5232 on a 3494 Model L10, L12, or L14 shipped prior to August 1998, one of the following must be installed on that Model L10, L12, or L14:

  • Feature number 9020 (3494 Model B18 VTS Attachment)
  • Feature number 9040 (High Availability Attachment)
  • Feature number 5045 (Enhanced Library Manager)

This will ensure that the 3494 library manager is at a level that will support the Attachment Concentrator feature number 5232.

Software Requirements: These features require no changes to the software support for Magstar 3590 Tape Drives attached through the 3590 Model A60 Controller to ESCON® channels on ES/3090™, ES/9000®, and S/390 systems that is provided in OS/390® (MVS/ESA™), VM/ESA®, VSE/ESA®, and TPF operating system environments.

Planning Information

Cable Orders: No additional cables are required for these features.
