OverviewIBM has dramatically enhanced the world-class performance, capacity, and attachability of the popular Magstar® 3590 Tape Subsystem by introducing new Model E11 and E1A Tape Drives (E Models). These enhanced models are intended to meet the growing needs of both new and existing customers across a broad range of computing environments including S/390®, AS/400®, RS/6000, Sun, and Windows NT® systems. This announcement fulfills the Product Preview included in the Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem Enhancements (refer to Hardware Announcement 199-038 , dated February 16, 1999). Key enhancements to the Magstar 3590 E Models will provide increased data transfer rate, greater cartridge capacity, and attachment flexibility. Improved technology allows the new models to read and write data at 14 MBps. The E Models employ a new high-technology design to increase the number of tracks on a tape cartridge from 128 to 256, increasing the cartridge capacity from 10 GB to 20 GB. These advancements can reduce the number of tape drives and cartridges required and the associated floor space. And the E Models allow a wide range of attachment options. Existing Magstar 3590 Model B11 and B1A Tape Drives (B Models) can be field upgraded to the new E Models, providing investment protection to the thousands of customers who have Magstar 3590 Tape Drives installed worldwide. Your investment in media is also protected. The new models will write on existing cartridges, and data written on cartridges with current 3590 Tape Drives can be read by the new models. IBM will continue to offer Magstar 3590 B Models with the recently enhanced Ultra SCSI support along with the new E Models. Product Preview: IBM intends to extend the connectivity of the new Magstar 3590 E Models by offering the following attachment options to take advantage of the new E Model capabilities:

DescriptionThe 3590 is a member of the IBM Seascape family of products. These products are part of a comprehensive foundation and blueprint for complete storage solutions that meet the needs of the networked world for application areas such as e-business and business intelligence. The Magstar 3590 is designed for high-performance tape applications, including:
IBM has dramatically enhanced the world-class performance, capacity, and attachability of the popular Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem by introducing new Model E11 and E1A Tape Drives (E Models). These enhanced models are intended to meet the growing needs of both new and existing customers across a wide number of environments. Key enhancements to the product will come in the form of increased data transfer rate, greater cartridge capacity, and additional attachment flexibility. Advantages of the new Magstar 3590 Tape Drive models include:
PerformanceThe new 3590 E Models leverage the use of new technology to offer a higher data transfer rate and greater cartridge capacity. The E Models read and write data more than 50% faster than existing models. The native transfer rate is 14 MBps, the sustained data rate reaches 33 MBps, and the maximum burst data rate is 40 MBps with the Ultra SCSI attachment, which is standard on the E Models. Higher data rate performance has the potential of reducing the number of tape drives required. CapacityThe new Magstar 3590 E Models employ a new fourth-generation magneto-resistive (MR) head design that provides a 100% native increase in the amount of data that can be stored on a 3590 High Performance Cartridge Tape. The number of tracks on the tape increases from 128 to 256, effectively doubling the amount of data that can be stored on a cartridge to 60 GB (at 3:1 compression). This can be very beneficial in space savings and economy of data storage since it halves the cost of storage per megabyte. For applications that fill current data cartridges this can dramatically reduce the number of tape cartridges required. The reduced number of cartridges can free up floor space for other requirements. ReliabilityThe 3590's outstanding reliability is further enhanced with:
This enhanced reliability can improve operations and reduce job reruns. Attachment OptionsThe Magstar 3590 E Models allow a wide range of attachment flexibility including SCSI, Ultra SCSI, and ESCON (using the 3590 Model A50 Controller). Supported high-performance systems include AS/400, RS/6000, S/390, Sun, and Windows NT. The new models will be supported in both stand-alone and automated environments. The new Magstar 3590 models provide exceptional value-add when supported in a Magstar 3494 Tape Library and in a StorageTek 4410 or 9310 Automated Cartridge System (ACS) environment. Investment ProtectionInvestment protection is another key benefit of the 3590 E Models. Your current Magstar 3590 Model B11 and B1A Tape Drives can be upgraded to the new 3590 Model E11 and E1A Tape Drives, allowing you to take advantage of the many benefits provided by the new E Models. In addition, as an accepted standard in the industry, there are millions of 3590 data cartridges in use by customers today, so your investment in media is also protected. The E Models will utilize the 3590 data cartridges in two ways:
Existing 3590 B Model tape drives will remain available after the general availability of the new models, and will continue to meet the needs of many customers. Product PreviewPreviewed product attachments would further extend the connectivity of the new Magstar 3590 E Models by offering the following attachment options to take advantage of the new E Model capabilities:
Previews provide insight into IBM plans and directions. Availability dates, prices, ordering information, and terms and conditions will be provided when the products and features are announced. Year 2000These products do not have date dependencies and are, therefore, Year 2000 ready. Product PositioningThe Magstar 3590, IBM's highest-performance tape subsystem, provides high capacity and reliability for S/390, AS/400, RS/6000, and a variety of IBM and non-IBM UNIX® and Windows NT systems. ES/3090, ES/9000, or S/390 Systems The 3590 Model E11 and E1A Tape Drives are supported for attachment to ESCON channels on ES/3090, ES/9000, and S/390 systems through the 3590 Model A50 Controller. Up to four E1A or E11 drives may be attached to the 3590 Model A50 Controller, and the subsystem will operate in either 3590 or 3490E drive emulation mode. The 3590 E Models are added to the host system's I/O configuration as if they were device type 3590 or 3490E. OS/390 (MVS/ESA) Support for 3590 E Model tape drives is provided in PTFs for the following software levels (earlier levels are not supported, and later releases will include support):
For 3590 Model E1A Tape Drives in an SMS-managed 3494 Tape Library, the 3590 E Model device support adds 256-track recording technology as a new data class attribute, allowing both 3590 B Model and 3590 E Model subsystems to coexist in the same library. The appropriate drive technology is allocated based on user preference during automatic class selection, downward read compatibility of 128-track-recorded tapes on 256-track 3590 E Model drives is exploited, and use of a common media pool by both 3590 B and E Models is supported. In a 3494 library, the 3590 E Model drives are set up as type 3590 (not type 3490E). These software enhancements are required even if the 3494 library contains only 3590 E Model subsystems. For other 3590 Model E1A or Model E11 drives (non-library drives or drives located in silo-compatible frames), unit allocation for intermixing emulation-mode 3590 E Models with other drive models having the same device type must be managed through local procedures or software products, such as Basic Tape Library Support (BTLS) or StorageTek's Host Software Component (HSC). Although the device support PTFs do not manage allocation issues, this maintenance should be applied to realize capacity exploitation benefits with applications such as HSM, OAM Object support, and DFSORT and to enhance EREP reporting. VM/ESA and VSE/ESA No new or enhanced software is required. The 3590 Model E1A and E11 Tape Drives operate transparently as either device type 3590 or 3490E. The application program or tape management system manages device selection and recording format relationships. Release levels of operating system and application software with 3590 or 3490E device support are required. Note: OS/390, VM, and VSE system software and service updates are distributed on 3480/3490 format tape cartridges. In situations where Magstar 3590 Tape Drives are sold into new accounts, it will be necessary to ensure the installation has at least one system-attached 3490 tape drive to read the system installation tapes. Compatibility: Magstar 3590 Tape Drives with the Ultra SCSI attachment are rack and frame install compatible with existing 3590 tape drives and use existing IBM supplied cables. They are also cartridge and data compatible with existing 3590 tape drives. The Magstar 3590 E Model tape drives can read cartridges created by the B Models. However, the E Models write data in a new 256-track format that cannot be read by the B Model tape drives. Limitations: The SCSI interface supports a maximum 2 MB block size. The SCSI differential interface is a 2-byte wide Ultra SCSI interface. When attaching to a 1-byte SCSI interface, such as the RS/6000 SCSI-2 Differential High-Performance Controller (#2420), a 1-byte to 2-byte interposer is employed. The 3590 must be located physically at one end of the bus when attached to a 1-byte SCSI interface. If multiple tape drives are attached to an RS/6000 bus, only one of them must be at the end of the bus. Although multiple systems may be attached to a 3590 tape drive, the systems cannot use the drive simultaneously. The 3590 can only be varied online to one system at a time. Only two AS/400 systems may be attached to the 3590 tape drive, one to each of the two 3590 SCSI ports. Magstar 3590 Model E11 or E1A Tape Drives cannot be attached to the same 3590 Model A50 Controller or 3494 Model B18 Virtual Tape Server with Magstar 3590 Model B11 or B1A Tape Drives. The E Model tape drives are not supported for attachment to a 3591 Model A01 Control Unit, a 3590 Model A00 Controller, a 3494 Model B16 Virtual Tape Server, or a 3495 Tape Library. Planning InformationCustomer Responsibilities: Physical planning is a customer responsibility. The 3590 Model A50 Controller and 3494 Model B18 Virtual Tape Server may require subsystem microcode updates by the IBM service representative for the proper installation and operation of attached 3590 Model E11 or E1A Tape Drives with the Ultra SCSI Attachment. Inform your IBM representative to refer to 3590 maintenance information for information on these requirements so they may be incorporated into your installation planning. Detailed physical planning information for the Magstar 3590 Tape Drives is in the IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0329). Cable Orders: The appropriate length SCSI cables for your installation environment should be selected from features #5106, #5112, #5118, #5125, #5128, #5129, #5134, #5138, or #5145 available on the Magstar 3590 Tape Drives.
