Overview

Five new Generation 5 S/390 (R) Parallel Enterprise Server model upgrade paths will assist customers in upgrading from prior 9672 servers to the G5, the world's most powerful S/390 server. Additional granularity makes the path into the G5 family much easier. These additional G5 upgrade options enable customers to take advantage of a modest performance and capacity boost from five prior CMOS 9672 models, to S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server (TM) Generation 5 models R26, RD6 and R56.

Vertical upgrades from the Y76 to the Y86, Y96, and YX6 are offered.

The introduction of models Y56 and Y66, offers the largest G5 engine and additional Turbo granularity. Models Y56 and Y66 both can be upgraded to the largest G5 server, the 10-way YX6. The Turbo Y56 is approximately the same capacity as the model R66. Due to the faster engine speed of the Turbo models, the Y66 has significantly more processor capacity than the R76. Both of the Y56 and Y66 models have significantly more processor capacity, capabilities, function and features than the largest water cooled 9021 processor, a 10-way 9X2 or even the largest Generation 4 Server -- the 10-way RY5. All Turbo models utilize 2 G5 Modular Cooling Units (MCUs) to chill the technology for added performance and reliability.

The MSU values for models RB6, RC6, RD6, RX6 and YX6 were revised on September 1, 1998. The final values replace preliminary values identified in July 1998.

The 9672 R06, a G5 model dedicated to coupling function, can be upgraded to models RA6-RD6, R36-RX6 and Y56-YX6. Coupling capacity can be maintained in most upgrades with G5 server models utilizing Internal Coupling Facilities (ICFs). R06 to G5 server model upgrades will be available March 1999. These upgrades add capacity in a flexible manner.

Capacity Back Up (CBU) function has been enhanced to include the ability to order a CBU test diskette, feature 0840, and CBU extension to Turbo models. The CBU diskette enables a customer to test the process of adding capacity to G5 servers.

Additional Upgrades to G5, the world's most powerful and capable S/390 Server, provide more flexibility for customers with G3 or G4 IBM CMOS Servers.

Five additional paths from 9672 R3, G3 and G4 servers have been added to G5 upgrade options. These upgrades will assist you in upgrading to a G5 server.

Additional Upgrades from Y76 add capacity to your business with minimal disruption.

The IBM S/390 Generation 5 leads the industry providing balanced I/O bandwidth, open system attachments, FICON channels, and memory flexibility, together with the most capable coupling nodes in any Parallel Sysplex (R). The new Turbo models, Y56 and Y66, give you an option of acquiring G5 capacity with the largest (approximately 152 MIPS) engine. You still have the option of acquiring capacity with a 127 MIPS engine in the aircooled R36-RX6 models. All G5 models, in this announcement, have at least one spare Processor Unit (PU). Spare PUs also can be configured as optional Systems Assist Processors (SAPs) or Internal Coupling Facilities (ICFs).

Models Y56 and Y66 are configured with two SAPs standard. Model Y56 can have four ICFs or four additional SAPs. Model Y66 can be ordered with up to three ICFs or three additional SAPs. Both models utilize the 12 PU Turbo module and can upgrade to more powerful Turbo models.

Models Y56 and Y66 have the same function and advanced features as previously announced G5 models. G5 features and function that require at least OS/390 (R) V1R3 to exploit include:

  • Integrated Cluster Bus (ICB)

  • FICON

  • Internal Coupling (IC) channels
IEEE Floating Point is enabled with OS/390 V2R6 or later.

MSU values for selected G5 models are:

Model MSUs

RB6 28 RC6 55 RD6 71 RX6 156 YX6 186 T16 22 (Capacity Back Up Model) Y16 26 (Turbo Capacity Back Up Model) T26 41 (Capacity Back Up Model) Y26 48 (Turbo Capacity Back Up Model) Y36 70 (Turbo Capacity Back Up Model) Y46 90 (Turbo Capacity Back Up Model) Y56 109 (New Turbo Model) Y66 128 (New Turbo Model)

Performance Advantages

The G5 servers provide excellent scalability in terms of additional performance benefit as the number of processors increase. In general, the performance of the G5 is approximately 1.8 to 2.4 times the performance of the corresponding G4 model. A 9672 model R16 is 1.75 to 1.9 times the performance of a model 9672 R15.

In general, the performance of the G5 is approximately 1.7 to 2.4 times the performance of the corresponding ES/9000 (R)-9021 711 based model.

The following summary of all S/390 Generation 5 servers announced to date is a performance comparison based upon the 9672 model R16:

The above performance comparisons are Internal Throughput Rate Ratios (ITRR) based on measurements and projections using standard IBM benchmarks in a controlled environment. The actual throughput that any user will experience will vary depending upon considerations such as the amount of multiprogramming in the user's job stream, the I/O configuration, and the workload processed. Therefore, no assurance can be given that an individual user will achieve throughput improvements equivalent to the performance ratios stated here. For more detailed performance information, consult the Large System Performance Reference (LSPR).

The LSPR will be available as follows:
