Overview
The 3995 C-Series Optical Library AS/400 (R) models can now be attached to the AS/400e series models and other AS/400 models through AS/400 magnetic media controller features. Prior to this attachment capability, AS/400 customers had to either use a LAN-attached optical library or use one of the AS/400 models supporting the 2621 Removable Media Device Attachment Feature.
In addition to the attachment options that the AS/400 PCI Magnetic Media Controller (feature #2729) and the AS/400 Magnetic Media Controller (#6534) provide, customers ordering 3995 C-Series Models C46 and C48 can now utilize the power of six internal optical drives. The use of six drives can improve data retrieval rates and library performance.
Enhanced OS/400 (R) support makes it easy for you to integrate 3995 optical storage into your AS/400 environment. AS/400 Hierarchical File System (HFS), Integrated File System (IFS), and save/restore commands are available, depending on the operating system level. The IBM 3995 Optical Library easily attaches to the AS/400 with the AS/400 Removable Media Device Attachment Feature (#2621), PCI Magnetic Media Controller (#2729), and Magnetic Media Controller (#6534).
The new 3995 C-Series features offer these benefits:
- Attachment to AS/400 systems using PCI Magnetic Media Controller
(#2729)
- Attachment to AS/400 systems using Magnetic Media Controller
(#6534)
- Attachment to AS/400 systems using Removable Media Device
Attachment Feature (#2621)
- Enhanced performance and reliability by using two additional Extended Multifunction Drives on 3995 Models C46 and C48
Intended Customers
- New and existing 3995 Optical Library Model C46 or C48 customers
requiring more throughput than available with four drives
- New or existing customers who need to connect 3995 Optical Libraries to AS/400 adapters #2621, #2729, or #6534
Key Prerequisites
Models of the 3995 C-Series Optical Library Dataserver with four internal drives or less require a new or existing AS/400 system capable of supporting #2621 (Removable Media Device Attachment Feature), #2729 (PCI Magnetic Media Controller), or #6534 (Magnetic Media Controller).
Models of the 3995 C-Series Optical Library Dataserver with six internal drives require an AS/400 capable of supporting #2729 (PCI Magnetic Media Controller) or #6534 (Magnetic Media Controller) and OS/400 Version 4 Release 2.

Library Description
Each library has an autochanger that moves the optical cartridges among the optical drives, the storage cells, and the entry/exit slot. Models C44, C46, and C48 feature a dual-gripper picker on the autochanger to deliver enhanced performance during the exchange of optical cartridges.
Each library has a see-through side panel for viewing the autochanger and drives while in operation. Cartridges can be easily inserted into or removed from the library via the entry/exit slot.

Year 2000
This product does not have date dependencies and is therefore Year 2000 ready.
This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the 20th and 21st centuries, provided all other products (for example, software, hardware, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.
Low-Cost Online Storage
The 3995 Optical Library family offers low-cost, high-capacity, direct access storage. These characteristics make the 3995 ideally suited as a low-cost extension to the online storage capacity for storage-intensive applications, less frequently accessed data, or environments where online access is required but sub-second response time is not necessary. Introducing the 3995 into the existing storage hierarchy can be simple and easy.
Optical cartridges are durable, offer a long-term archive life, and can easily be removed from the library for shelf or off-site storage. The direct access features of the 3995 give customers access to files, as well as concurrent access to all data residing on the same cartridge. The 3995 has incremental write and update capabilities which means an entire cartridge can be filled at your convenience.
Positioning the 3995 C-Series AS/400-attached and 3995 LAN-attached
Optical Storage
The IBM AS/400 supports both the 3995 C-Series AS/400 Direct Attach Optical Libraries and IBM's 3995 Optical Library Dataservers for the LAN environment. Each optical storage attachment has its advantages.
3995 AS/400 Direct Attach
- Ease of implementation with AS/400 Removable Media Device
Attachment Feature
- Familiar AS/400 commands
- Enhanced OS/400 support, including Integrated File System (IFS)
support with OS/400 V3R6 and later, plus support for OS/400 save
and restore commands at V3R7 and later
- Lower price per megabyte
- Control unit functions provided by AS/400
- Library management provided by OS/400 software support
- Optical storage can be shared by multiple AS/400s (not data
sharing) and by other LAN hosts and intelligent workstations.
- OS/400 communicates with the 3995 LAN-attached Optical Library
using Advanced Program to Program Communications (APPC).
- LAN servers provide optical library management and HPOFS
functions, off-loading these functions from the AS/400 host.
- Full read and write support, including media space reclamation with rewritable media.
Functions and performance of certain applications can vary depending on whether the 3995 library is direct-attached or LAN-attached. Refer to the application documentation or your IBM application marketing specialist for additional information.
Bringing New Data into the Storage Hierarchy
The 3995 Optical Library family has a unique set of characteristics not offered by the traditional electronic storage mediums of magnetic disk and tape. These unmatched features, in combination with optical storage's low cost, high capacity, and direct access characteristics, make the 3995 the solution of choice for data currently stored on paper, microfiche, and microfilm. The 3995 delivers the following:
- Permanent WORM technology addresses the business process and legal
requirements for a permanent copy of the original data, continuous
composite WORM for a lower-cost, software-protected copy of the
original data, and magneto-optical rewritable technology for
accessing changeable data.
- Removable cartridges provide shelf storage as the data becomes
aged and access requirements become less frequent, giving
customers additional capacity at a very small incremental cost.
- Long-term media archive life satisfies business process and legal requirements for long-term data retention.
- The cost of an optical solution is often much less than the cost
of the raw materials, storage space, and labor associated with
paper or microfiche storage and retrieval.
- Productivity is enhanced through easier and faster access to data
because searches and retrievals are done at machine speed. Also,
multiple users can have access to the same data simultaneously,
eliminating the need to wait for data.
- Customer service is improved since inquiries can be resolved in a single phone call. With a few keystrokes, all the customer's data is quickly available to your customer service representative, eliminating the need for time-consuming and costly callbacks to the customer.
- Imaging and workflow management for business documents and
records, government documents and records, medical and patient
records, engineering drawings, product diagrams
- Computer Output to Laser Disk (COLD) as a replacement for
microfiche and microfilm copies of customer statements, billing
statements, transaction records
- Report management for any type of report including customer lists, payroll, and accounting reports
