Overview

With a huge portfolio of business applications, unparalleled ease-of-use, and reliability that has become a standard for the industry, AS/400 (R) is a popular success story.

The range of models with IBM PowerPC AS (TM) microprocessors provides excellent scalability and growth. One of the four new models offers more than four times the performance of today's most powerful option. That kind of flexibility and growth can keep pace with your most demanding business tasks, including conferencing, accounting, database management, or managing networks of users as a file server.

A new, high-end design launches a high-function, commercially robust package that supports 8-way and 12-way symmetric multiprocessors, up to 20GB of main storage, and 996GB of disk storage. With this unprecedented growth comes the support you expect for the world of global computing: network and collaborative computing, support for capitalizing on Internet e-commerce opportunities, and high availability and recovery.

The new entry point design spans a broad range of performance. It provides lower cost for small configurations and the versatility to grow to large configurations with 2-way symmetric multiprocessors, 4GB of main storage, and 704GB of disk storage.

A new family of PowerPC (R)-based I/O processors deliver greater function, improved performance and cost reductions on common configurations. The new 100Mbps Ethernet adapter supports network serving with high-bandwidth, low-cost connection. Beginning with Version 4 Release 1, OS/400 (R) is included in the price of AS/400e (TM) systems. A software order is required to record the OS/400 V4R1 license included with these systems. Refer to Software Announcement %+%Start_Letter_Link%+%<297-308> 297-308, dated August 19, 1997.

Model Upgrades

Upgrades to the new 6XX models are available from many existing models. These upgrades require both a model upgrade and a processor conversion. In many cases they will also require an OS/400 upgrade or transition charge. Use the configurator to ensure a valid and supported configuration of new and existing features and components.

Most of these upgrades are planned to be available August 29, 1997. Some, however, are planned for February 27, 1998. The latter are noted with an @ symbol on the upgrade matrices.

Upgrading to new AS/400 systems with PowerPC AS microprocessors, requires planning by marketing, business partners, service, and customer personnel.

Services are available from IBM to help you upgrade. For CISC-to-RISC upgrades, System Transition Services are available. Additional upgrade information is provided in the AS/400 Roadmap for Changing to PowerPC Technology (SA41-5150). For RISC-to-RISC upgrades, Migration Services are available. Additional upgrade information is provided in the AS/400 System Upgrade Roadmap (SA41-5155).

Contact your IBM representative or Business Partner for details on these services.

In all upgrades, the machine type of the original machine will be maintained. System upgrades involve substantial change to an installed system. Accounting and tax implications may result and should be reviewed by a tax advisor.

Memory Exchanges

When conversions to 6XX models result in incompatible main storage features, exchanges to equal or greater capacity in megabytes of feature main storage will be offered from the following models:

Description Exchange Offered Until

9404/9406 F Models January 1, 1998

3XX Models January 1, 1998

4XX Models September 1, 1998

5XX Models September 1, 1998

Exchanges are not available when the from system is an e-system. 9402 CISC-to-RISC exchanges have been withdrawn. 9404 and 9406 CISC-to-RISC exchanges were previously announced as available until January 1, 1998. All RISC-to-RISC exchanges, including exchanges within the 5XX and 4XX models, will be withdrawn effective September 1, 1998.

All exchanges are on a priced megabyte-for-megabyte basis at 100%.

Only IBM-manufactured main storage memory cards are eligible for feature exchange.

Parts removed as part of an memory exchange transaction must be returned to IBM.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

The AS/400e series offers more function, higher performance, and dramatically better price/performance than previous models.

AS/400e systems are best for host-centric computing needs where data is stored and managed by a single system, application processing and screen processing are done by the same system, and screen information is sent to workstations to be displayed without further processing. The workstations can be non-programmable terminals, or PCs running emulation programs.

AS/400e servers are best for workstation-centric computing needs where data, processing, and presentation are done by programmable workstations.

Upgrade CISC (IMPI) and RISC systems horizontally to RISC/V4R1 if a model upgrade is needed.

Upgrade all CISC (non-RISC) systems to V3R2 if a model upgrade is not needed.

Upgrade all RISC systems to V4R1 if a model upgrade is not needed, but V4 function is.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

MODEL 600/620/640/650 FEATURES

Customer-Installable Features

On the Model 600, IBM will begin to deliver customer-installable features. This is in response to customer requests for more flexibility in system and MES installability. Future systems will be designed to further enable customer-installable features.

On the Model 600, DASD, PCI features, and external cables will be customer installable.

On MES orders where all features are customer installable, the customer will install all features. On MES orders that contain mix of customer engineer (CE) and customer-installable features, if you so choose, the CE will install all features (including those designated as customer installable). IBM installation of orders containing all customer-installable features will be available via normal service contracts.

PCI Card Packaging

With Models 600 and 620, an industry-standard form factor known as Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) is introduced. In the future, it will allow AS/400 (R) to choose from a wide range of devices that can be integrated into the system. The introduction of PCI technology to AS/400 packaging promotes the integration of new technologies for AS/400 applications.

Voltage: Model 600 systems units can operate at either low voltage (100 to 127 V AC) or high voltage (200 to 240 V AC). Models 620, 640, and 650 system units operate at high voltage. Expansion towers #5070, #5072, #5080, and #5082 can operate at either low voltage or high voltage. Expansion towers #9251, #5071, #5073, #5081, and #5083 operate at high voltage.

The appropriate system power cord is added automatically by the configurator based on the three-digit country code on the order. Refer to the AS/400 Physical Planning Reference (SA41-5109) for your default power cord, other power cord options, and additional technical planning information. For upgrades, it is important to consult SA41-5109 to make sure no changes to your power distribution system are required.

Hardware Requirements: The minimum operable and serviceable system configuration consists of a system unit and a system console.

The system requires AS/400 Licensed Internal Code. The Licensed Internal Code is preloaded on the system disk storage unit.

The system console may be any supported display or IBM-compatible PC emulating a supported display. The system console should be located within six meters (20 feet) of the operator's panel, and the operator's panel must be viewable from the display.

Although a printer is not required for service, IBM's ability to diagnose the system and perform upgrades is greatly enhanced when a printer is available.

Although not required for hardware service, IBM's ability to service the system is greatly enhanced when a voice telephone is available within view of the system. The telephone must not be connected to phone mail or an answering machine, since the ability to receive calls on this telephone is important in the event support personnel need to reach the IBM representative. This telephone line is in addition to the one needed for ECS.

A high-speed modem, IBM 7852, or equivalent, is required for ECS.

Software Requirements: AS/400e (TM) systems require OS/400 V4R1, or later. Refer to Software Announcement %+%Start_Letter_Link%+%<297-299> 297-299, dated August 19, 1997, for additional information.

Security, Auditability, and Control

This product uses the security and auditability features of the Operating System/400 (R). Use of these facilities is optional. The security measures supplied by OS/400 are designed to reduce the risk of users changing or destroying data resources, but do not prevent it. The OS/400 security features include the use of passwords, a security option to limit a user to only those functions provided by customer-designed menus, and a security option to limit read/write access for files, libraries, and folders during normal operations. To achieve increased security, the OS/400 controls should be combined with physical security, division of duties, and other appropriate measures.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
