The PC Server 500 System/390(R) (PC Server S/390(R)) is an integrated
hardware and software solution that combines:
- A powerful S/390 microprocessor for running most of your
VM/ESA(R), VSE/ESA(TM), or MVS/ESA(TM) applications without
modification
- A 90MHz Intel** Pentium** processor that provides you with all the
functions and application availability of the OS/2(R) environment
The PC Server S/390, an innovative, technologically advanced server,
exploits the reliability and high performance of the PC Server 500 --
running OS/2 Warp in a LAN environment -- and S/390 architecture.
This offers low-cost S/390 capability, plus the ability to use
PC-based development tools.
The PC Server S/390 enables you to utilize S/390 processing power
wherever you need it, independent of the host system. This allows
developers to arrive at a solution that breaks through programming
bottlenecks. Developers and programmers can develop, test, and
create prototype S/390 applications and client/server applications in
a stand-alone environment -- without interrupting production
applications running on the host system. By using the PC Server
S/390, you can take advantage of productivity tools such as graphical
user interfaces and multitasking capabilities.
If you need distributed S/390 processing capabilities, the PC Server
S/390 offers high-performance and scalable networking. In addition
to supporting S/390 applications, the server also supports OS/2
applications. The PC Server S/390 provides file, print, or
application serving, or can function as a client running LAN
requester software for coexistence in an established LAN. This makes
it easy for you to integrate the S/390 into a network.
For System/370(TM) users, the PC Server/390 helps you make the
transition to next-generation S/390 computing, using the same
architecture, while building on existing skills and dramatically
reducing costs. Total computing costs are reduced in many areas
including maintenance, power, cooling, and floor space.
Attractive purchase prices for VM/ESA, VSE/ESA, and MVS/ESA operating
systems and the associated S/390 software are available for license
to the PC Server S/390. Product and price information is available
through IBMLink(TM) or by contacting your IBM representative.

S/390 Microprocessor Complex with SynchroStream technology for
unmatched data streaming and Advanced Micro Channel(R). The key
features are:
PC Server System/390 optional features:
- S/370 Channel Emulator/A Adapter
A Micro Channel adapter, which emulates the operation of an S/370
and S/390 channel. This adapter can be used to attach most S/390
I/O devices and/or controllers, except DASD, to the PC Server
System/390.
- 32MB P390 Memory Daughter Card
A 32MB daughter card that plugs onto the existing PC Server S/390
Microprocessor Complex to increase the S/390 memory to 64MB.
- 96MB P390 Memory Daughter Card
A 96MB daughter card that plugs onto the existing PC Server S/390
Microprocessor Complex and extends into the adjacent Micro Channel
slot, expanding the S/390 memory to 128MB.
The value that the PC Server System/390 delivers to customers results
from the combination of OS/2 and System/390 capabilities, operating
singularly or concurrently, in this new server:
- Ability to support two unique operating systems concurrently:
- System/390 and OS/2 applications both run unmodified
- Broad range of applications are available
- Ability to participate in LANs as the server, a client, or a
dedicated S/390 processor
- Minimize skills transfer/training costs
- Capitalize on existing skills base
- Minimal skill transfer/training costs
- Reduce migration/conversion costs
- Minimal risk
The PC Server System/390 offers the following possibilities:
- IBM PC Server System/390: Development Workbench
Using the PC Server System/390 should help developers and
programmers develop, test, and maintain mainframe software while
prioritizing S/390 resources between development and production.
OS/2 tools and 3GL and 4GL S/390 tools can be used to assist with
system analysis, application design and re-engineering, and
coding. Prototyping and testing of applications can be
accomplished on the PC Server System/390 without interruption to
host production systems. In an isolated, minimal-risk test
environment, the software developer utilizes the PC Server
System/390's capabilities to maximize host compatibility while
using both the OS/2 and S/390 tools for increased productivity.
The increased productivity of a departmental development workbench
should result in quicker implementation and make the PC Server
System/390 a viable business choice.
The PC Server System/390 as a development workbench provides the
opportunity to use S/390 3GL and 4GL software tools and
OS/2 within a single platform to develop and test both mainframe
and client/server applications with processing distributed over a
range of PCs and mainframes. IBM software is also available for
developing graphical user interfaces for existing host
applications, adding ease of use without changing the host
application.
The development workbench can be used by application programmers,
system programmers, database administrators, network specialists,
and Solution Developers to develop, maintain, and test S/390 and
PC software.
The PC Server System/390 can assist customers and solution
developers in developing applications. Solution developers should
be able to develop/test industry-specific and cross-industry S/390
applications, producing application solutions for the benefit of
their customers. This development workbench can help those
developers gain the productivity benefits of graphical user
interfaces, reduce development time using 3GL and 4GL tools,
exploit object-oriented technologies, and experiment with
state-of-the-art techniques.
- PC Server System/390: Distributed Server
- Remote Server
For those entry S/390 customers requiring total systems
management of multiple remote systems, the PC Server System/390
provides a distributed platform capable of running S/390
applications while providing additional OS/2 capabilities. The
remote locations may run their businesses autonomously, while
receiving consistent services from the host in the form of
business applications, regional and corporate data, system
skills, and transparent systems management. Overall, cost
savings can be achieved by the consolidation of skills at the
host, limited administrative skills at the remote sites, a
total lights-out operation at the remote sites, and reduced
telecommunication costs.
- LAN Client/Server
The PC Server System/390 can fully participate in a LAN
environment as the server or a client. As a LAN server, the PC
Server System/390 enables the integration of S/390 into the LAN
environment with single server management running OS/2 LAN
Server. The PC Server System/390 has a wide variety of uses
(for example, print server, and file server) at a
cost-effective price.
As a client, the PC Server System/390 can run LAN Requester
software. This coexistence allows for flexibility in choice of
LAN environments while providing a high-availability S/390
configuration for drop-in installation and flexible
implementation.
- Entry S/390 Server
For those S/390 enterprises requiring cost reductions and new
technology advantages in their older S/360 and S/370 environments,
the PC Server System/390 provides a possible replacement system
depending on the customer's configuration. (Refer to the Planning
Information section.) Substantial savings can be achieved in
lower maintenance costs on both the processor and DASD, lower
energy costs, lower connectivity costs, and environmental savings.
These potential benefits are derived from the PC Server System/390
packaging with internal disk storage, low power requirements, LAN
connectivity, and integrated CMOS technology.
SOFTWARE
Each PC Server System/390 is shipped with OS/2 and CM/2 software on
CD-ROM and enabling software for the PC Server System/390. Also
shipped with the product is ServerGuide, a package that contains
popular LAN server products on CD-ROMs that may or may not be
applicable to your needs. ServerGuide contains encrypted software
products for which activation keys can be ordered for a fee to unlock
and install the software product. NetFinity(TM) on ServerGuide is

All currently marketed VM/ESA, VSE/ESA, and MVS/ESA operating systems
and their associated S/390 products are available for the PC Server
System/390. The following are generic descriptions of the operating
systems.
- VM/ESA
The Virtual Machine/Enterprise System Architecture (VM/ESA)
operating system is IBM's S/390 environment for interactive and
distributed computing. VM/ESA supports a wide range of
applications such as office systems, LAN serving, engineering and
scientific applications, as well as application development.
VM/ESA also has the ability to run other operating systems (for
example, MVS/ESA, VSE/ESA) on the same hardware as a "guest" of
VM/ESA, allowing users the flexibility to create multiple test
and/or production systems. As an open operating system, VM/ESA
will provide the capability to port UNIX(1) applications to the
S/390 platforms.
- VSE/ESA
The Virtual Storage Extended/Enterprise System Architecture
(VSE/ESA) is a member of the System/390 strategic family of
operating systems. It offers cost-effective batch, transaction
processing, and client/server capabilities. VSE/ESA Version 2
Release 1 brings exciting new client/server capabilities to
traditional VSE strengths. Alone, or in combination with VM/ESA,
VSE/ESA is the primary S/390 offering for small and intermediate
data centers. VSE/ESA is also the strategic S/390 offering for
centrally managed, remote, unattended systems.
- MVS/ESA
The Multiple Virtual Storage/Enterprise System Architecture
(MVS/ESA) is IBM's premier S/390 operating system for users who
deal with commercial transaction processing (for example,
CICS(TM), IMS(TM) PM, TSO, and APPC), batch processing, and
large-scale data processing on a multitude of databases (such as
DB2(R), VSAM, and IMS DB). It is an operating system with
superior reliability, availability, data and system integrity,
security, and capability to scale to high levels of capacity. As
an open operating system, MVS/ESA provides the capability to port
UNIX applications to the S/390 platforms.
As part of the S/390 software order, customers can request a CD with
preconfigured S/390 system images that provide a "load and go"
system. Included in the preconfigured images on the CD are I/O
device maps to help the customer get started and a set of unique

PRODUCT POSITIONING
The announced product combines the high-performance Pentium PC Server
500 with the specialized PC Server S/390 Microprocessor Complex for
the Micro Channel-based PC Server. All I/O is handled by
OS/2 running on the Intel Pentium processor in the PC Server. This
I/O capability is provided through a collection of device managers
(where device drivers exist and the I/O device will be shared with
other OS/2 processes) and device drivers (where the device will be
dedicated to S/390 processing).
This unique server is targeted for the S/390 customers with
interactive workloads, batch workloads, and/or non-I/O-intensive
transaction processing. For this type of environment, the PC Server
System/390 provides a viable replace and/or distributed option. A
customer workload requiring intensive I/O will not realize the same
performance and throughput characteristics as S/390 machines with
multiple channels due to the PC Server System/390 having only a
single I/O channel. The PC Server System/390 may not be the platform
of choice for customers requiring extensive I/O support. Refer to
the Planning Information section in this document for customer fit.
The PC Server 500 System/390 systems with S/390 operating
compatibility offered in this announcement are comprised of component
products currently offered by IBM. For detailed information

- Maximum Altitude: 2133m (7,000 ft)
Hardware Requirements: For machine requirements information, refer
to the product announcement material of the currently offered
components of the solutions. The announcement material is identified
in the Product Positioning section of this announcement.
The PC Server 500 System/390 requires an analog display (6325, 6324,
9524, 9525, or equivalent) for system setup and service.
Programming Requirements: The following operating systems support
the PC Server 500 System/390:
- Currently marketed versions of VM/ESA, VSE/ESA, and MVS/ESA
- OS/2 Warp Version 3.0 with WIN-OS/2 and Communication Manager/2
Compatibility: For compatibility information, refer to the
individual product announcements. The announcements are identified
in the Product Positioning section.
The PC Server 500 System/390 contains licensed system programs that
include set configuration, set features, and test programs. Some of
these system programs are stored in the system ROM, while others are
contained on diskette. System BIOS is loaded from a "flash" EPROM on
the system board into system memory. This BIOS provides the hardware
instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features
of the PC Server 500 System/390 and to maintain compatibility with
many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the
Personal Computer XT(TM), Personal Computer AT(R), and the PS/2
family. Due to the higher speed of the processors in these models,
some timing-sensitive software may require modification.
Limitations: For information on limitations of the components of the
PC Server 500 System/390, refer to the individual product
announcements. The announcements are identified in the Product
Positioning section.
The PC Server System/390 is a combination of the System/390 and PC
Server architectures and provides access and use of both in a single
package. The implementation of the S/390 capability in the PC Server
System/390 is unique when compared to standard S/390 processors.
While the S/390 instructions execute natively on a dedicated CMOS
chip on the S/390 Microprocessor Complex, the execution of S/390 I/O
is handled by OS/2 Device Managers and Device Drivers. The PC Server
System/390 cannot support multiple "channels" attached to the same
physical device. This capability exists and is exploited in standard
S/390 systems. In this implementation, S/390 devices (tapes and
printers) are either channel attached (via S/370 Channel Emulator/A)
or emulated on PC devices transparent to the S/390. While this
creates an environment with many exciting options for I/O attachment
and support, use of the server's I/O resources requires workload
planning to achieve good results.
Other limiting factors:
- S/390 functions not supported: ESCON(R), PR/SM(TM), Parallel
Sysplex, Coupling Links, Integrated Coupling Migration Facility,
Sysplex, Sysplex Timer(R) (ETR), Concurrent PR/SM Maintenance,
Dynamic Reconfiguration Management, Vector Facility, Expanded VF
Instructions, SIE I/O Assist, Asynchronous Pageout Facility, ICRF,
Asynchronous Data Mover Facility.
- The PC Server System/390 does not attach to S/390 DASD.
- VM/ESA provides guest support. However, there is no multiple
high-performance guest support provided. Only one guest can run
as V=R. Additional guests must run a V=V with some performance
degradation. V=F is not supported. This does not affect CMS
guests.
Planning Information
Customer Responsibilities: The announced products are designated as
customer setup. Customer setup instructions are shipped with the
system. Refer to the Related Services (fee-based planning services)
section.
Configuration Guidelines: Performance planning requires a knowledge
of the anticipated workloads for the PC Server System/390. The
requirements of the following critical areas need to be understood.
- Processor utilization
- Memory utilization
- DASD storage requirements
- Tape storage requirements
- Physical connectivity (number, type, speed)
- Communications protocols
- I/O rates
- Transaction rates
- Additional I/O requirements
- Adapters
A technical application brief (IBM PC Server 500 System/390 ... Is
it Right for You?) is available. Refer to the Publications section.
It is designed to provide performance information for the areas
listed above along with guidelines for evaluating your current
configurations in these areas. The objective of this document is to
provide assistance in evaluating the PC Server 500 System/390 to
determine if it will meet your processing needs. To order this
publication, contact your IBM representative or call 800-IBM-CALL
(426-2255).
Relevant Planning Information: Refer to the technical application
brief for details.
- Subject to availability of open slots, maximum four SCSI
controllers or RAID controllers are supported.
- Subject to availability of open slots, maximum two S/370 Channel
Emulator/A Adapter cards are supported for channel attached S/370
and S/390 devices.
- A monitor does not come with the PC Server System/390 and needs to
be ordered separately. The recommendation is to use a 15-inch
(maximum viewable area when measured diagonally) or 17-inch
(maximum viewable area when measured diagonally) monitor with at
least 1024 x 768 resolution and a fast non-interlaced refresh
rate, such as the IBM 9524 or 9525 displays. This will take full
advantage of the video capabilities provided by the system. Some
applications are less demanding than others, and IBM provides many
displays that can be used.
- A printer does not come with the PC Server System/390 and needs to
be ordered separately. A variety of printers is available. A
general guideline is to use a laser-type printer, since it will
often be serving as the system printer, with capacity and
capabilities appropriate for the intended workload.
- For MVS/ESA systems, it is recommended that the PC Server
System/390 be configured with 128MB of S/390 memory for
performance reasons. Even though an MVS/ESA system can run with
32MB of S/390 memory, performance will be affected by the memory
requirement of the operating system, the amount of data, and the
number of users. For certain workloads, paging can become a
significant component of I/O as the number of users is increased
for a given storage size. Additional users can be accommodated by
utilizing the additional S/390 storage. The capacity of the PC
Server System/390 can be limited by the inherent I/O rate of the
work being done and not by paging caused by adding users. Under
these conditions, the addition of memory in ESA mode can provide
additional capacity through the avoidance of I/O by locating
data-in-memory.
For a base MVS/ESA system, an array model with the standard five
hard drives (11.25GB of disk storage) is recommended. Using RAID
five on this configuration provides 9.0GB of usable disk storage,
which is enough space for a base MVS/ESA system. If additional
programs and large amounts of customer data are required, order
additional hard drives.
Based on the above information, the 8641-MYF array model is ideal
for base MVS/ESA systems.
- If using VM/ESA or running guests under VM/ESA, you may need an
additional 32MB of S/390 memory to alleviate paging. The more
users required on a VM/ESA systems, the more S/390 memory
required.
Cable Orders: For Cable Ordering information, refer to the
individual product announcements. The announcements are identified
in the Product Positioning section.
Installability: The PC Server System/390 requires about one to two
hours for installation and initial setup. Installation includes
unpacking, set-up, and powering on the system. Additional time is
required to install other adapters, features, and software. PC
software can take two to eight hours to install. Installation of a
base VM/ESA or VSE/ESA system using the preconfigured starter CD
takes about 30 minutes. To install a VM/ESA, VSE/ESA, or MVS/ESA
system using currently supported media can take eight hours or more.
A softcopy publication, IBM PC Server 500 System/390 Installation,
Configuration and User!s Guide, provides installation instructions
and is shipped with the system.
Refer to Related Services section for Installation Services.
