(Corrected on October 7, 2002)

Warranty information was revised.

Overview

The IBM TotalStorage™ Enterprise Storage Server™ (ESS) Advanced Functions enhance the capabilities of the ESS Model 800:

  • Parallel Access Volumes (PAV) offer significant performance enhancements in the IBM eServer zSeries and S/390® environments by enabling simultaneous processing for multiple I/O operations to the same logical volume.
  • Extended Remote Copy (XRC) is a combined hardware and software business continuance solution for the zSeries and S/390 environments providing asynchronous mirroring between two ESSs at global distances.
  • Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy (PPRC) is a hardware-based business continuance solution designed to provide synchronous mirroring between two ESSs that can be located up to 103 km from each other.
  • FlashCopy™ is designed to provide a point-in-time copy capability for logical volumes.

The ESS Function Authorization feature numbers introduce a new set of pricing tiers for the ESS Advanced Functions. These tiers provide increased granularity (as compared to earlier models) with pricing matched to the physical capacity of the ESS Model 800.

The ESS Function Authorization feature numbers are for billing purposes only and authorize the use of ESS advanced functions at a given capacity level on a specific ESS Model 800.

Refer to Hardware Announcement 102-201 , dated July 15, 2002, IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server Model  800, for additional information on the ESS and the advanced functions.

Description

The ESS Function Authorization feature numbers are for billing purposes only and authorize use of ESS advanced functions at a given capacity level on a specific ESS Model 800.

ESS advanced functions require the selection of 2105 Model 800 feature numbers and purchase of the Model 800 matching 2240 ESS Function Authorization feature numbers:

  • The ESS Model 800 feature number enables a given function on the ESS at a given capacity level.
  • The ESS Function Authorization feature number authorizes use of the given advanced function at the given capacity level on the ESS machine for which it was purchased.
The ESS Model 800 #8xxx feature numbers and the ESS Function Authorization #8xxx feature numbers are corequisites and must always correspond to each other.

Technical Information

Hardware and Software Requirements: The ESS Function Authorization feature numbers authorize the use of ESS advanced functions at a given capacity level on a specific ESS (IBM 2105 Model 800).

ESS Function Authorizations are applicable only for the serial numbered ESS on which they were initially purchased; they are not transferable to another serial numbered ESS.

Planning Information

Customer Responsibilities: ESS advanced functions are enabled and authorized based on the physical capacity of the ESS:

  • PAV and XRC: Enablement and authorization must be equal to or greater than the physical capacity within the ESS that will be logically configured as Count Key Data (CKD) volumes for use with zSeries and S/390 servers.
  • PPRC and FlashCopy: Enablement and authorization must be equal to or greater than the total physical capacity of the ESS.

To calculate physical capacity, multiply each Disk Eight-Pack (ESS Model 800 feature numbers 212x, 213x, 214x, and 215x) by its respective "physical capacity" value shown in the table below and sum the totals. Step Ahead Disk Eight-Packs must be included in the capacity calculation.

Disk Disk Eight-Pack
Size Physical Capacity

18.2 GB 145.6 GB
36.4 GB 291.2 GB
