Overview

The IBM TotalStorage™ Enterprise Storage Server™ (ESS), IBM's premier storage solution for use in Storage Area Networks (SANs), now supports 72.8 GB drives.

With the new option for 72.8 GB drives, the ESS offers configurations with increased scalability and improved price/performance that enable users to harness the vast terabytes of data required to help meet their business requirements. These higher capacity drives, in conjunction with drive intermix capability, provide exceptional scalability for fast growth and the ability to adapt to changing storage requirements.

Key Prerequisites

IBM 2105 ESS Models F10 or F20 with ESS Licensed Internal Code (LIC) level 1.5.0, or later.

Planned Availability Date

December 14, 2001, with the following exception:

January 25, 2002

  • New machine orders with intermix of Disk Eight-Pack — 72.8 GB features (#2124 and #2134) with other Disk Eight-Pack features (#2121, #2122, and #2123).

Description

72.8 GB Drives Increase Scalability and Offer New Price/Performance Options

With 72.8 GB drives, RAID-5 effective capacity of an Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) has increased to over 22 TB, providing exceptional scalability.

Furthermore, these new drives, in conjunction with drive intermix support, provide a vast number of ESS configuration options. As a result, price/performance can be optimized to meet specific server and application requirements — all within a single ESS.

72.8 GB Drives Offer Outstanding Performance

IBM's ESS customers have become accustomed to high levels of performance for their most demanding workloads. With the availability of the 72.8 GB drive support, the performance requirements of many of these demanding workloads can continue to be met — at a lower cost.

IBM recommends that all ESS customers consider using these new drives. The 72.8 GB drives provide superior seek and throughput characteristics (as compared to other drives offered within the ESS) thereby allowing each drive to satisfy more demand. Moreover, access densities (I/O operations per second per GB disk space) continue to decline, so workloads migrated to 72.8 GB drives will often not notice any material difference in performance.

Some customers have very high demand workloads that may be very cache-unfriendly or have a very high random write content. These workloads may still require lower capacity drives (more drives are required for a given capacity). For these workloads, customers may want to consider purchasing lower capacity drives or, for environments with mixed workloads with different characteristics, an intermix of drive capacities.

As always, IBM recommends asking your disk marketing specialist to model your workload migration with Disk Magic. This tool can help predict response times given the disk size and hardware configuration under consideration. For additional details, ask your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner for a copy of the performance flash that describes ESS performance with the new 72.8 GB drives.

Capacity Calculation

With the Flexible Capacity Option features (#9500 and #9600), capacity is ordered by explicitly selecting the type and quantity of Disk Eight-Pack features desired.

Table 1 should be used as the basis for determining the capacity of a given configuration.

Effective capacity represents the approximate portion of the disk eight-pack that is usable for customer data. All available capacity may not get fully utilized due to overheads on logical devices and/or a loss of capacity due to a configured set of logical devices.
2
RAID-5 configured array consisting of seven data drives + one parity drive.
3
RAID-5 configured array consisting of six data drives + one parity drive. The remaining drive is used as a spare.

Notes:

  • A gigabyte (GB) equals one billion bytes when referring to disk drive capacity; accessible capacity may be less.
  • With RAID-5, although the capacity of one disk is assigned for parity, the actual parity information is distributed on the disks allocated for data storage. When 7+P is used, there are eight disks used for the storage of the data and parity information. When 6+P is used, seven disks are used for data and parity.

RAID-5 Capacity Calculation for Non-Intermix Configurations

A spare pool consisting of two drives (created with two 6+P arrays) is created on every SSA loop. As a result, all disk eight-packs in the ESS base enclosure are configured as 6+P arrays, while all disk eight-packs in the Expansion Enclosure are configured as 7+P arrays. Table 2 displays the RAID-5 effective capacity for the various configuration options now available.

RAID-5 Capacity Calculation for Intermix Configurations

Multiple drive sizes (intermix of Disk Eight-Pack features) are supported within a SSA loop. The first two RAID-5 arrays configured on each loop for each drive size are configured as 6+P, providing up to two spares for each size.

For intermix configurations, all disk eight-packs in the ESS base enclosure are configured as 6+P arrays (same as for non-intermix configurations).

For configurations with an Expansion Enclosure, intermix may result in additional spares being created (additional 6+P arrays), as compared to non-intermix configurations. Two additional 6+P arrays will be created whenever a new drive size is added to a SSA loop.

For new machine or MES orders which include intermix, the disk eight-packs will be installed into the machine as follows:

  • Eight-packs will be installed in sequence from highest capacity to lowest capacity. If eight-packs are being installed which have the same capacity but different RPM speeds, the eight-packs with the higher RPM will be installed first.
  • The current eight-pack "plug order" and SSA cabling scheme will be used. Eight-packs are installed on an SSA loop in pairs, with the first pair of eight-packs installed on the A loop in device adapter (DA) pair number 1, the second pair of eight-packs installed on the A loop in DA pair number 2, and so on.
  • The current, standard physical locations for disk eight-packs will be used. Eight-packs number 1 through 8 will be installed in the first Disk Eight-Pack Mounting Kit, eight-packs number 9 through 16 will be installed in the second Disk Eight-Pack Mounting Kit, and so on.

Your IBM storage specialist can help you calculate your RAID-5 effective capacity in intermix configurations.

Advanced Function License Capacity Calculation

For advanced functions (#18xx features), ESS capacity should be calculated using the effective capacity of a RAID-5 6+P array. All disk eight-packs, including Step Ahead Disk Eight-Packs (#213x), must be included in the capacity calculation.

PAV (#180x) and XRC (#181x):

  • For the ESS Models E10 and E20, the license purchased must be equal to or greater than the total capacity of the ESS.
  • For the ESS Models F10 and F20, the license purchased must be equal to or greater than the capacity of the S/390®-configured portion of the ESS.

PPRC (#182x) and FlashCopy (#183x):

  • For all ESS models, the license must be equal to or greater than the total capacity of the ESS.

Table 3 lists the ESS capacity (for advanced function license calculation purposes) using all 6+P arrays in a non-intermix configuration. Your IBM storage specialist can help you calculate your advanced function license requirements in an intermix configuration.
