Overview

The TotalStorage™ Enterprise Storage Server™ (ESS), IBM's premier storage solution for use in Storage Area Networks (SANs), has just become even better! The ESS is now more flexible with the ability to support mixed drive sizes. With drive capacity intermix, a vast number of configuration options are now available, so price, performance, and capacity can be optimized to meet specific server and applications requirements — all within a single ESS.

For IBM e(logo)server zSeries 900 and S/390® environments, the ESS has been enhanced to support control-unit-initiated reconfiguration (CUIR) and a new 32,760 cylinder 3390 volume. CUIR helps improve availability by automating channel path quiesce/resume actions and reducing the manual actions required during selected ESS service actions. The 32,760 cylinder 3390 volume helps relieve address constraints, and improves disk resource utilization and storage administrator productivity by providing the ability to consolidate multiple disk volumes into a single address.

For the open systems environment, the ESS continues IBM's leadership and commitment to open standards with attachment support to Intel servers running Linux. Additionally:

  • Subsystem Device Driver (SDD) support for Windows® 2000 cluster configurations and AIX® 5L V5.1 is also now available.

Description

Disk Drive Intermix Provides Configuration Flexibility

The Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) has been enhanced with the ability to support mixed drive sizes (intermix). With drive intermix, a vast number of configuration options are available, so price and performance can be optimized to meet specific server and applications requirements — all within a single ESS.

Intermix support is available on all ESS models. Any type and quantity of available Disk Eight-Pack features (#212x) can be intermixed as long as the features are purchased in increments of two and supported on a given ESS model. This support is also available in Step Ahead configurations.

Intermix support requires the new Flexible Capacity Option features (#9500 and #9600). These new features replace the Standard Configuration features previously used when specifying ESS capacity and drive type. With the Flexible Capacity Option, capacity is now ordered by explicitly selecting the type and quantity of disk eight-pack features desired.

Expanded Capacity Configuration Options

Capacity configuration options have been enhanced and expanded with the Flexible Capacity Option (#9600). This feature, which replaces the Standard Configuration features, offers the ability to purchase:

  • Any type and quantity of available Disk Eight-Pack features (#212x) as long as the features are purchased in increments of two (and supported on a given ESS model). Previously, all disk eight-packs within an ESS needed to be of the same type (capacity).
  • An empty Expansion Enclosure (#2100) to be populated with disk eight-packs at a later date. Previously, an Expansion Enclosure could only be purchased when the number of disk eight-pack features exceeded 16.
  • Capacity within the Expansion Enclosure in increments of two disk eight-packs. Previously, capacity for the Expansion Enclosure could only be purchased in increments of four disk eight-packs.

With this feature, the following enhancements are available to existing machines with 9.1 GB Standard Configurations (#9601 and #9602):

  • Enhanced flexibility: Additional capacity can be added using any available disk eight-pack types supported by a given ESS model.
  • Increased scalability: An Expansion Enclosure can be added to the configuration.
  • Improved granularity: Additional capacity can be purchased in increments of two disk eight-packs, even within the Expansion Enclosure.

The following enhancements are available to existing machines with 18.2 GB Standard Configurations (#962x and #963x):

  • Enhanced flexibility: Additional capacity can be added using any available disk eight-pack types supported by a given ESS model.
  • Improved granularity: Additional capacity can be purchased in increments of two disk eight-packs within the Expansion Enclosure.

The following enhancements are available to existing machines with 36.4 GB Standard Configurations (#964x and #965x):

  • Enhanced flexibility: Additional capacity can be added using any available disk eight-pack types supported by a given ESS model.
  • Improved granularity: Additional capacity can be purchased in increments of two disk eight-packs within the Expansion Enclosure.

Step Ahead Program Enhancements

The Step Ahead program and capacity configuration options have been enhanced with the Step Ahead Flexible Capacity Option (#9500). This feature, which replaces the Step Ahead Standard Configuration features, offers the ability to:

  • Purchase Step Ahead Disk Eight-Packs (#213x) of any type, independent of the type of Disk Eight-Packs (#212x) installed in the ESS. Previously, the Step Ahead Disk Eight-Packs needed to be of the same type (capacity) as the disk eight-packs.
  • Purchase new Step Ahead Disk Eight-Packs of a different type (capacity) than the previous Step Ahead Disk Eight-Packs.

The Step Ahead Flexible Capacity Option also offers the ability to purchase:

  • Any type and quantity of available Disk Eight-Pack (#212x) features as long as the features are purchased in increments of two (and supported on a given ESS model).

The following additional changes are being made to the Step Ahead program:

  • The maximum number of Step Ahead Disk-Eight Pack features per machine is limited to two.
  • The Step Ahead Disk Eight-Packs are now priced to include the Step Ahead fee. Previously, the Step Ahead fee was priced with the Step Ahead Standard Configuration features; these features are replaced with the Step Ahead Flexible Capacity Option, a no-charge (NC) feature.
  • Additional Disk Eight-Packs (#212x) can be purchased without a new Step Ahead fee charge. Previously, a new Step Ahead fee was charged when additional disk eight-packs were added into the Step Ahead configuration (that is, an upgrade to a larger Step Ahead Standard Configuration).
  • If the Step Ahead storage is not purchased within one year, but additional Disk Eight-Packs (#212x) have been purchased within the last year, then customers can remain in the Step Ahead program with the Step Ahead Annual Renewal features (#216x). Previously, an option was not available to remain in the Step Ahead program when Step Ahead storage was not purchased within one year.

Channel Path Quiesce/Resume Actions Automated with Control-Unit-Initiated Reconfiguration (CUIR)

With CUIR, users in IBM e(logo)server zSeries 900 and S/390 environments no longer need to be concerned with manually determining path status and taking the actions to cause the needed status changes.

CUIR promotes high availability in complex customer environments by automating the channel path quiesce/resume actions that are necessary for selected ESS service actions.

New High Capacity 3390 Volumes Simplify Storage Management

The 32,760 cylinder 3390 volume can help relieve address constraints, and improve disk resource utilization and storage administrator productivity by providing the ability to consolidate multiple disk volumes into a single address.

High capacity volumes can simplify the storage management process because managing fewer high capacity volumes is easier than managing many low capacity volumes. Furthermore, the occurrences of multivolumes data sets are reduced, along with the management complexities in working with these structures.

Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy (PPRC) Performance Improvements with INRANGE 9801 Storage Network System (SNS)

Enhancements to the INRANGE 9801 SNS exploit the PPRC Establish Copy design, allowing data to now stream across the network without unnecessary intermediate messages (protocols) for data transmission which previously affected performance (time to establish the copy) when data is transferred over long distances.

These enhancements enable new ESS solutions with the INRANGE 9801 for data movement and migration at distances much greater than previously possible.

Linux Support Extended to Intel Servers

IBM's leadership and commitment to open standards continues with ESS expanded support for Linux. The ESS currently supports Linux for S/390 in the zSeries and S/390 environments. The Linux support is now extended to Intel server environments running industry-leading Linux distributions from Red Hat and SuSE.

The ESS copy services for rapid backup and disaster recovery (FlashCopy and PPRC) are supported in the Intel server environment running Linux. These functions can be managed via the ESS Web Copy Services interface within the ESS Specialist or through ESS Command Line Interface (CLI) to invoke and manage FlashCopy and PPRC functions through batch processes and scripts.

Subsystem Device Driver (SDD) Support Extended to Windows® 2000 Cluster Configurations and for AIX 5L

SDD can now be used with the AIX 5L V5.1 operating system and in Windows 2000 Advanced Server cluster configuration with up to two nodes. SDD provides load balancing and enhanced data availability capability in configurations with more than one I/O path between the host server and the ESS.

Load balancing can reduce or eliminate I/O bottlenecks that occur when many I/O operations are directed to common devices via the same I/O path. SDD also helps eliminate a potential single point of failure by automatically rerouting I/O operations when a path failure occurs, thereby supporting enhanced data availability capability.

Note: SDD load balancing is not supported in Windows 2000 cluster configurations.

SDD is provided with the ESS at no additional charge and is supported on numerous other operating systems and levels. A complete and current list of supported operating systems and levels is available on the Web at:

CLI Support for Novell NetWare

Support for the ESS CLI is extended to the Novell NetWare operating system. The CLI enables open systems hosts to invoke and manage FlashCopy and PPRC functions through batch processes and scripts. The CLI provides commands to query the status of ESS volumes and to execute Copy Services tasks that were previously saved using the ESS Web Copy Services interface within the ESS Specialist. By integrating CLI commands into host scripts, FlashCopy and PPRC functions can be integrated into new or existing host automation processes.

The CLI is provided with the ESS at no additional charge and is also supported on the AIX, HP-UX, ptx®, Solaris, Windows NT®, and Windows 2000 operating systems. A complete and current list of operating systems and levels supported by the CLI is available on the Web at:

Host Adapter Feature Conversions

To facilitate the exchange of host adapters, host adapter feature conversions are now available. These conversions support the exchange of existing host adapters when purchasing new host adapters.

New Features for Ordering Replacement Power Cords

Power cords for the ESS are now available as optional features (#26xx) to simplify the ordering of replacement cords.

On new machine orders, power cords will continue to be selected using the no-charge specify features (#98xx and #998x).

  1. Effective capacity represents the approximate portion of the disk eight-pack that is usable for customer data. All available capacity may not get fully utilized due to overheads on logical devices and/or a loss of capacity due to a configured set of logical devices.
  2. RAID-5 configured array consisting of 7 data drives + 1 parity drive.
  3. RAID-5 configured array consisting of 6 data drives + 1 parity drive. The remaining drive is used as a spare.

Additional notes:

  • A gigabyte (GB) equals one billion bytes when referring to disk drive capacity; accessible capacity may be less.
  • With RAID-5, although the capacity of one disk is assigned for parity, the actual parity information is distributed on the disks allocated for data storage. When 7+P is used, there are eight disks used for the storage of the data and parity information. When 6+P is used, seven disks are used for data and parity.

RAID-5 Capacity Calculation for Non-Intermix Configurations

A spare pool consisting of two drives (created with two 6+P arrays) is created on every Serial Storage Architecture (SSA) loop. As a result, all disk eight-packs in the ESS base enclosure are configured as 6+P arrays, while all disk eight-packs in the Expansion Enclosure are configured as 7+P arrays.

The following table displays the RAID-5 effective capacity for the various configuration options now available. For convenience, the Standard Configuration feature number is shown in parenthesis. (Note that the Standard Configuration features will no longer be used for specifying capacity and disk eight-pack type.)

RAID-5 Capacity Calculation for Intermix Configurations

Multiple drive sizes (intermix of Disk Eight-Pack features) are supported within a SSA loop. A spare pool consisting of two drives (created with two 6+P arrays) is created for each drive size on a SSA loop.

For intermix configurations, all disk eight-packs in the ESS base enclosure are configured as 6+P arrays (same as for non-intermix configurations).

For configurations with an Expansion Enclosure, intermix may result in additional spares being created (additional 6+P arrays), as compared to non-intermix configurations. Two additional 6+P arrays will be created whenever a new drive size is added to a SSA loop.

For new machine or MES orders which include intermix, the disk eight-packs will be installed into the machine as follows:

  • Eight-packs will be installed in sequence from highest capacity to lowest capacity. If eight-packs are being installed which have the same capacity but different RPM speeds, the eight-packs with the higher RPM will be installed first.
  • The current eight-pack "plug order" and SSA cabling scheme will be used. Eight-packs are installed on an SSA loop in pairs, with the first pair of eight-packs installed on the A loop in device adapter (DA) pair number 1, the second pair of eight-packs installed on the A loop in DA pair number 2, and so on.
  • The existing, standard physical locations for disk eight-packs will be used. Eight-packs number 1 through 8, will be installed in the first Disk Eight-Pack Mounting Kit, eight-packs number 9 through 16, will be installed in the second Disk Eight-Pack Mounting Kit, and so on.

Your IBM storage specialist can help you calculate your RAID-5 effective capacity in intermix configurations.

Advanced Function License Capacity Calculation

For advanced functions (#18xx features), ESS capacity should be calculated using the effective capacity of a RAID-5 6+P array. All disk eight-packs, including Step Ahead Disk Eight-Packs (#213x), must be included in the capacity calculation.

Parallel Access Volumes (PAV) (#180x) and Extended Remote Copy (XRC) (#181x):

  • For the ESS Models E10 and E20, the license purchased must be equal to or greater than the total capacity of the ESS.
  • For the ESS Model F10 and F20, the license purchased must be equal to or greater than the capacity of the S/390-configured portion of the ESS.

PPRC (#182x) and FlashCopy (#183x):

  • For all ESS models, the license must be equal to or greater than the total capacity of the ESS.

The following table lists the ESS capacity (for advanced function license calculation purposes) using all 6+P arrays in a non-intermix configuration. Your IBM storage specialist can help you calculate your advanced function license requirements in an intermix configuration.
