Overview

The TotalStorage™ Enterprise Tape Controller 3590 Model A60 now offers improved application performance and capacity utilization for enterprise tape users.

Model A60 hardware enhancements:

  • Allow applications, operating in 3490E mode and writing small blocks, to fully exploit the 3590 E model and extended length cartridge capacity. This capacity enhancement is exploited by DFSMShsm™.
  • Support high-speed location to relative file position, enabling high-speed locate to any file number on a tape. This capability can significantly improve read performance for file-stacking applications that access by file number rather than block ID. These new file positioning capabilities of the hardware are exploited by OS/390® and z/OS™, and are transparent to the user application.
  • Offer significantly improved write performance for applications that stack multiple small files on a tape. Performance gain is achieved through elimination of costly redundant, rewritten tape marks, and associated backhitch. These new write performance capabilities of the hardware are exploited by OS/390 and z/OS, and are transparent to the user application.

New fibre cable options are also available for the 3590 Model A60 with FIbre CONnections (FICON™) channel attachment.

Description

Now, the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Controller 3590 Model A60 offers hardware enhancements that will allow enterprise-class tape customers to reap the slot benefits of high-capacity tape for additional applications without expanding, and possibly decreasing, their current processing window.

Capacity Utilization

3490E emulation is used by many customers with high-capacity tape products, since it allows compatibility with competitive automation hardware with minimal operational disruption. However, some applications that use smaller blocksizes with high-capacity offerings such as the 3590 E Models, or use extended length tape cartridges, cannot fill the entire tape due to limitations in the 3490E architecture. New Model A60 hardware enhancements allow applications operating in 3490E mode to fully exploit the 3590 E Model and extended length cartridge capacity. This new extended capacity option is application requested and established during OPEN. DFSMShsm can exploit this new capability. Refer to the closing text for APAR OW49829 for more details on DFSMS support. The expanded capacity capability for 3490E emulation mode can be exploited by other assembler-language programs for use with IBM 3590 Model A60 subsystems.

File Positioning

Certain applications that stack files on tape do not have a product control data set in which to store file block ID locations, and rely on file sequence number for access to data. Read and write performance can be unacceptable since current interfaces require OPEN to use repeated, time consuming, Forward Space File commands to access the data. The Model A60 has been enhanced to support new file-positioning commands to allow access to data based on file number at the same fast locate speed as with block IDs. This capability is exploited by OPEN and is transparent to the application. The benefits are received automatically without application changes. DFSMSrmm™ customers, running with z/OS or OS/390 Version 2 Release 10, already have the benefit of high-speed locate for applications that do not store block IDs.

Write Performance

Prior to the announced new capabilities, applications that stack many files on a single cartridge have experienced degraded performance due to the performance cost of inter-file processing. Such applications include file stacking products, as well as data management programs that migrate managed objects such as report images or backups of application-managed data to tape. New Model A60 hardware enhancements eliminate redundant, rewritten tape marks and the associated backhitch, giving such applications the possibility of running faster. These new capabilities are exploited in OPEN/CLOSE/EOV and are transparent to the application. They apply automatically to programs that write multiple tape files without de-mounting the tape. The Model A60 also offers additional options for write performance improvements that can be implemented on an application level by independent software vendors or by customers with small source code changes to assembler-language application programs.

FICON Fibre Cable Options

The 3590 Model A60 Controller supports both native FICON short wavelength and long wavelength attachments. Fibre cables features are now available to provide cables to attach to host systems with LC Duplex connectors such as the new FICON channel features for IBM e(logo)server zSeries servers (FICON Express LW 1.75, (#2319), or the FICON Express SW 1.75, (#2320)), or the IBM 2032 McData ED-6064 Enterprise Fibre Channel Director. When specified, these features replace the cables normally shipped with the Model A60 FICON Attachment — Long Wave feature (#3432) or FICON Attachment — Short Wave feature (#3433).
