Overview

If you are using DLTtape or a mix of LTO Ultrium and DLTtape Tape media, you can now access all your media with a single IBM 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library. The IBM 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library now:

  • Supports DLTtape drives, in addition to LTO Ultrium tape drives, for improved data access
  • Provides DLT 8000 tape drives and IBM LTO Ultrium tape drives for improved performance

Improved Data Capacity

A new Model D42 has been designed to take advantage of DLT 8000 Digital Linear Tape Drives and Cartridges. The Model D42 can have up to 12 DLT 8000 drives and can be partitioned into a maximum of six logical libraries. The D42 or D32 models can be intermixed with new or existing Model L32 frames, providing access to LTO or DLTtape media within the same library.

Easy to Attach

You can attach the Model D42 by using Fast/Wide Low Voltage Differential (LVD) or Fast/Wide High Voltage Differential (HVD) SCSI interfaces. The new Model D42 also supports Multipath architecture, allowing multiple homogeneous or heterogeneous applications to share the library.

Expanded Input/Output (I/O) and Improved Availability

An expanded I/O feature is available for the Model L32 providing 20 additional LTO Ultrium or 18 DLTtape I/O slots.

All drives in the 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library are now packaged to support redundant, hot-swappable drive power. Drives within the libraries can now be hot-swapped without unplugging SCSI cables or power cables.

Remote Library Access

The new StorWatch™ Specialist feature for the Model L32 allows use of popular Web browsers to provide remote library administration.

The new Remote Support feature for the Model L32 provides Call Home capability for improved service and support.

Description

Scalable Automation

The IBM 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library can be an excellent choice if you are:

  • Experiencing growth in online storage requirements
  • Considering a tape automation solution for your data storage needs
  • Considering an LTO Ultrium, Digital Linear Tape, or mixed LTO/DLTtape solution

Each 3584 Model D42 expansion frame contains from 1 to 12 DLT 8000 tape drives, each having a native data transfer rate of 6 MB/sec and a cartridge capacity of 40 GB. Using data compression, the DLT 8000 drives have an effective data rate of up to 12 MB/sec and a cartridge capacity of up to 80 GB (with 2:1 compression) on DLTtape IV media. The 3584 library with five Model D32 frames features cartridge slot storage capacities up to 2481 cartridges, providing total capacities of 248.1 TB of native data. With compression, a six-frame 3584 Tape Library with one Model L32 frame and five Model D32 frames, can store 496.2 TB of data. A 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library with five D42 frames has a capacity of up to 1784 DLTtape slots and 229 LTO Ultrium slots, resulting in a maximum native data capacity of 22.9 TB on LTO Ultrium media and 71.4 TB on DLTtape.

Note: Although the LTO Ultrium and DLT 8000 tape drives in the 3584 provide the capability for high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved. The compression technology used in the tape drive can typically double the amount of data that can be stored on the media; however, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed.

Each 3584 Model D42 can be partitioned into six logical libraries. Multipath architecture allows system sharing with multiple homogeneous or heterogeneous hosts. The optional StorWatch Specialist allows Internet access and control using popular Web browsers. The 3584 Model D42 can be combined with existing Models L32 and D32 to provide mixed media support and host sharing.

The DLT 8000 drive supports the new DLTtape IV cartridges, designed for increased tape speeds and high-density data recording. Native data rates are 6 MB/sec (native) and 12 MB/sec (compressed) with cartridge capacities of 40 GB native and 80 GB using 2:1 compression. The DLT 8000 drive is also backward compatible with previous DLTtape cartridges, providing backward read and write compatibility for customers with existing DLTtape inventories.

Refer to the Sales Manual for specific feature descriptions and requirements.

A terminator is included with each feature number 1454, 1455, 1458, and 1459 tape drive. Fibre Channel or SCSI cables and appropriate interposers, as required, should be ordered for attachment to a server. Refer to the Cables section for detailed descriptions of these Fibre Channel and SCSI cable features. A power cord feature number, if applicable, should also be specified.

The capacity of the Model L32 can be expanded by enabling an additional four columns in that frame with the addition of the Capacity Expansion feature numbers 1603 (Field) or 1653 (Plant).
