Overview

The IBM Magstar® 3590 Tape Subsystem now has additional performance and connectivity benefits through support of native FICON™ short wavelength attachments. Now, the Magstar 3590 Model A60 Controller can attach to native FIbre CONnections (FICON) short wavelength channels on IBM Enterprise Class systems such as the IBM 9672 Enterprise G5, G6, or the IBM e(logo)server zSeries 900 Server. Up to two FICON short wavelength attachments are supported on each Magstar 3590 Model A60 Controller in stand-alone, Magstar 3494 Tape Library, and StorageTek Silo solutions. In addition, the Model A60 will support the intermix of FICON short wavelength, FICON long wavelength, and ESCON® attachments, allowing a customer to share drives among environments.

The channel link speed for FICON is 100 MB per second full duplex compared with 17 MB per second simplex with ESCON links. A single FICON channel on a Model A60 with four attached Magstar 3590 E Model Tape Drives provides performance up to 60 MB/sec with blocksizes greater than 32 KB. FICON short wavelength support is available for Magstar 3590 B or E Models attached to new 3590 Model A60 Controllers or via a field upgrade on currently installed Model A60 controllers, protecting your tape hardware investment.

The Magstar 3590 Model A60 can now attach Magstar 3590 E Model Tape Drives with Fibre Channel Attachment. When attached to a Model A60 with native FICON attachment, a single 3590 Model E Tape Drive using a Fibre Channel attachment is capable of up to a 70% improvement in data rate for blocksizes greater than 64 KB as compared to a single 3590 Model E Tape Drive using SCSI attachments. With Fibre Channel Attachment, up to 12 drives can now be attached to a Model A60 in stand-alone rack, frame, or Silo solutions.

Enhancements are also available for customers who utilize the Magstar 3590 Model A60 with SCSI attached tape drives. Up to eight 3590 drives with SCSI attachments can now be attached to a Model A60 in stand-alone racks or frames. • FICON short wavelength channel attachment of a Model A60 to host systems or a FICON/FC switch
  • Fibre Channel tape drive attachment to a Model A60 in a stand-alone rack, frame, or automated solution
  • Multiframe SCSI tape drive attachment to a Model A60 of Magstar 3590 Tape Drives in two Model A14s or racks
  • Feature conversion to convert installed feature number 3412 (Dual ESCON Attachment) to feature number 3433 (FICON Attachment — Short Wavelength)
  • Model conversion to convert an installed 3590 Model C14 Silo Compatible Frame to a Model C12

FICON Short Wavelength Channel Attachment

The Magstar 3590 A60 Controller now supports both native FIbre CONnections (FICON) short wavelength as well as FICON long wavelength attachments. While both have the same high performance characteristics, lower infrastructure costs can be realized when using FICON short wavelength attachments. FICON also enables easier server consolidation, new application growth, large business intelligence queries, and exploitation of network computing.

The IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem now has additional performance and connectivity benefits with support for native FICON short wavelength. The Magstar 3590 A60 Tape Controller can attach to native FICON short wavelength channels on IBM Enterprise Class systems such as the IBM 9672 Enterprise G5, G6, or zSeries 900 Server. The Model A60 with native FICON can also attach to the IBM 2032 McDATA ED-5000 Enterprise Fibre Channel Director and the IBM 2042 INRANGE FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director. Up to two FICON short wavelength attachments are supported on each Magstar 3590 A60 Controller in stand-alone, Magstar 3494 Tape Library, and StorageTek Silo solutions. The Model A60 will support up to two FICON attachments. These FICON attachments can be two long wavelength, two short wavelengh, or one long wavelength with one short wavelength.

In addition, the Model A60 Controller will support the intermix of FICON short wavelength, FICON long wavelength, and ESCON attachments, allowing a customer to share drives among environments. The channel link speed for FICON is 100 MB per second full duplex compared with 17 MB per second simplex with ESCON links. Four 3590 E Model Tape Drives attached to an Model A60 with a single FICON channel provide performance up to 60 MB per second with blocksizes greater than 32 KB. FICON short wavelength support is available for Magstar 3590 B or E Models attached to new 3590 Model A60 Tape Controllers, or via a field upgrade on currently installed Model A60 controllers, protecting your tape hardware investment.

Fibre Channel Drive Attachment

The attachment of 3590 Fibre Channel-attached tape drives to the Model A60 can increase single drive performance as well as allow the attachment of more 3590 drives to the controller in stand-alone rack, frame, and Silo solutions. Most significantly, this allows you to invest in newer technology Fibre Channel drives for both your enterprise class and open systems servers.

For a Silo-compatible environment, up to 12 Magstar 3590 E Model Tape Drives in three Magstar 3590 Model C12 Silo Compatible Frames can be attached to each Model A60 in a Magstar 3590 Model C10 Silo Compatible Frame. In addition, the Model C10 frame with the Model A60 is no longer subject to the 25 meter SCSI cable length restriction, and can be located up to 475 meters from the Model C12 frames that contain the 3590 Fibre Channel Tape Drives. If power sequencing is required, the distance between frames will be limited by the 28 meter length of the power sequencing cable to 25 meters between frames. Since the 3590 Model C14 Silo Compatible Frame does not support the installation of 3590 drives with the Fibre Channel Attachment feature, a model conversion is being offered to allow an installed 3590 Model C14 frame to be converted to a Model C12 frame.

For a Magstar 3590 Model A14 Frame environment, up to 12 drives with the Fibre Channel Attachment feature can now be attached to a single Model A60 Controller. The first Model A14 frame would contain a Model A60 with up to four drives, and up to two additional Model A14 frames with up to four drives each can be attached.

For a stand-alone rack configuration, up to 12 drives with the Fibre Channel Attachment feature can now be attached to a single Model A60 Controller when using a 1.8 meter or larger rack, such as the IBM 7014 RS/6000® Rack Models T00 and T42. A 1.8 meter rack can accommodate a Model A60 with up to four 3590 E Model Fibre Channel Tape Drives. Up to two additional racks with up to four tape drives each can be attached to the Model A60 in the first rack. A 1.6 meter rack, such as the IBM 9309 Model 002 or the IBM 7014 Model S00, will accommodate only two 3590 E Model Fibre Channel Tape Drives and a Model A60 Controller with a 2109 Model S16 SAN Fibre Channel Switch. Therefore, when using a three-rack multiframe configuration with 1.6 meter racks, you can attach only 10 drives to the Model A60 in the first rack.

There are no changes to the number of drives that can be attached to a 3590 Model A60 in a Magstar 3494 tape library when using Fibre Channel Attached drives. Up to four fibre channel drives can be attached to a Model A60 in a 3494 D14 frame, and up to ten fibre channel drives can be attached when using Adjacent Frame Fibre Drive support.

All configurations that attach Fibre Channel Drives to a Magstar 3590 Model A60 Controller require feature number 3463 (Fibre Drive Attachment) on the Model A60. This feature replaces the Ultra SCSI tape drive attachment with two Fibre Channel adapters, for attachment of Magstar 3590 E Model Tape Drives with Fibre Channel attachment capability. In addition, one IBM 2109 Model S16 SAN Fibre Channel Switch is required for each Model A60 that attaches 3590 Fibre Channel Drives. Additional features are required on the 3494 Tape Library frames, 3590 Model C12 frame, 3590 Model C10 frame, 3590 Model A14 Frame, and 3590 Model A60 (for stand-alone racks) for attaching fibre channel drives. Refer to Technical Information section for more details on prerequisite features.

SCSI Multiframe Support

Features are now available to allow up to eight Magstar 3590 SCSI Tape Drives in a 3590 Model A14 Frame or a stand-alone rack environment to attach to a 3590 A60 Controller. For a Model A14 environment, a Model A60 in a Model A14 Frame with four 3590 SCSI Tape Drives can attach to up to four additional 3590 SCSI drives in one additional Model A14 frame. For a stand-alone rack environment, a Model A60 in a rack with four 3590 SCSI drives can attach to up to four additional 3590 SCSI drives in a second rack. Features are available on the Model A14 frame and the 3590 Model A60 (for stand-alone racks) for this new support. Refer to Technical Information section for more details on prerequisite features.

Feature Conversion

A feature conversion is also available to convert up to two installed Dual ESCON Attachments (#3412) to FICON — Short Wavelength Attachments (#3433). This enables you to use an installed Model A60 Controller and replace your ESCON connections with a faster FICON connection. The FICON maximum channel link speed of 100 MB per second full duplex compared with 17 MB per second simplex with ESCON links may increase tape performance. Four Magstar 3590 E Model Tape Drives attached to a Model A60 with a single FICON channel provides performance up to 60 MB per second with blocksizes greater than 32 KB. This feature conversion provides the replacement hardware and includes one 31-meter (100 foot) multimode 50 micron fibre cable with SC Duplex connectors, unless you want to connect to an existing ESCON 62.5 micron fibre network using feature number 0109 (ESCON/62.5 Micron Multimode SC Duplex Jumper). A FICON connection can run over 50 micron multimode fibre cables up to a distance of 500 meters (1,640 feet) or 62.5 micron multimode fibre cables up to a distance of 250 meters (820 feet).

3590 Model C14 to C12 Conversion

A model conversion is now available to convert an installed 3590 Model C14 Silo Compatible Frame to a Model C12 Silo Compatible Frame. This will allow attachment of Fibre Channel attached 3590 Model E1A Tape Drives to those frames. The 3590 Model C14 only supports installation of Magstar 3590 Model B1A and E1A Tape Drives with SCSI attachment to a controller. The 3590 Model C12 supports installation of Magstar 3590 Model E1A Tape Drives with the Fibre Channel Attachment in addition to SCSI attachment.

Product Positioning

For enterprise class customers, the Magstar 3590 Model A60 Controller can provide both a stand-alone and automated attachment of the highest capacity, highest performance tape drive that IBM offers today. In combination with FICON-capable processors (such as the IBM 9672 Parallel Enterprise G5, G6, or zSeries 900 servers), the Model A60 with native FICON attachment enables improvements in tape performance and attachment distance. In addition, by utilizing the Model A60 with FICON, you can receive many of the FICON benefits, including relieving ESCON channel constraints, conserving processor I/O slots, and reducing infrastructure costs. By attaching 3590 Tape Drives with Fibre Channel attachment, improvements in single drive performance and attachment flexibility are possible because of the potential to attach more drives to the Model A60 in stand-alone rack, frame, and Silo environments.

The support for FICON short wavelength or long wavelength connection is the same. Refer to the following Web site for the most current information on FICON processor, FICON switch, and operating system levels supported with the Magstar 3590 Model A60 with native FICON:

Support is provided for the Magstar 3590 Model A60 Controller with attached Magstar 3590 B or E Model Tape Drives unless otherwise noted. Refer to the 3590 and processor (for example, 9672) PSP buckets for details.

Native FICON Support

The following minimum levels are supported for native FICON attachment:

  • OS/390® and z/OS
    • OS/390 Version 2 Release 6, or later, and the associated level of DFSMS. PTFs are required for all supported releases of OS/390.
    • z/OS Version 1 Release 1, or later, and the associated level of DFSMS. APAR OW47844 is recommended.
    • EREP Version 3.5 plus PTFs.

Support for the 3590 E Model Tape Drives provides controls to allow intermixing 3590 E Model and B Model subsystems in an SMS-managed 3494 Tape Library. Allocations provide a desired drive type that is managed through a data class attribute for the 256-track recording format. Downward read compatibility of 128-track-recorded tapes on 256-track 3590 E Model Tape Drives is exploited in libraries with both 128-track and 256-track subsystems. Shared common media pools are used for both 3590 B and E Models. In a 3494 library, the 3590 E Model drives are set up as type 3590 (not type 3490E). The 3590 E Model software enhancements are required even if you are not intermixing B Model and E Model subsystems in the 3494 library.

For 3590 E Model or B Model Tape Drives not inside 3494 libraries (non-library drives or drives located in Silo-compatible frames), the software support cannot manage allocation among multiple drive models that use the same emulation type (for example, 3590 E Model and B Model Tape Drives that are both defined in the I/O configuration as device type 3590). Allocation for different drive models having the same device type must be managed under SMS as a manual library (available on DFSMS Version 1 Release 5, or later, for stand-alone drives — refer to the 3590Device PSP bucket for PTFs), or through local procedures or software products, such as Basic Tape Library Support (BTLS) or StorageTek's Host Software Component (HSC). Although the 3590 E Model device support PTFs do not manage allocation issues for mixed B and E Models outside libraries, this maintenance should be applied to maximize capacity with applications such as HSM, OAM Object support, and DFSORT™, and to enable EREP reporting by true device type or model.

  • z/VM — Native
    • z/VM Version 3 Release 1, or later. APAR VM62710 is required (the RSU tape shipped with z/VM includes APAR VM62710).
    • EREP Version 3.5 plus PTFs.
  • z/VM — Guest
    • z/VM Version 3 Release 1, or later. The support enables a guest operating system with its own native support to use the FICON attachment; however, the guest operating environment (for example, z/OS) must have its own native support for FICON attachment to realize the performance advantage of FICON.
    • EREP Version 3.5 plus PTFs.
  • VM/ESA® — Native
    • VM/ESA Version 2 Release 3, or later. APAR VM62710 is required.
    • EREP Version 3.5 plus PTFs.
  • VM/ESA — Guest
    • VM/ESA Version 2 Release 2, or later. APAR VM62090 is required for VM/ESA Version 2.2.0 and 2.3.0. The support enables a guest operating system with its own native support to use the FICON attachment; however, the guest operating environment (for example, OS/390) must have its own native support for FICON attachment to realize the performance advantage of FICON.
    • EREP Version 3.5 plus PTFs.
  • VSE/ESA™
    • VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 3, or later, will operate transparently with no additional maintenance.
    • EREP Version 3.5 plus PTFs.
  • Transaction Processing Facility (TPF)
    • TPF Version 4 Release 1, or later, with 3590-support PTFs applied will operate transparently with no additional maintenance.
    • Support is provided for attachment of 3590 B Model Tape Drives only.

Note: OS/390, VM, and VSE system software and service updates are distributed on 3480/3490 format tape cartridges. In situations where Magstar 3590 Tape Drives are sold into new accounts, ensure that the installation has at least one system-attached 3490 tape drive to read the system installation tapes.

Fibre Channel Drive Attachment

Support for Fibre Channel attached 3590 Tape Drives on a Model A60 is through the same ESCON or FICON software levels. For ESCON support levels, refer to the 3590 Model A60 Controller sales manual.

Limitations

The following limitations apply to Fibre Channel 3590 Tape Drives attached to a 3590 Model A60 Controller:

  • The IBM 2109 Model S16 SAN Fibre Channel Switch is used exclusively by the Model A60 Controller.
  • The 2109 switch and attached 3590 E Model Tape Drives cannot be shared with open systems servers.
  • The 3590 Fibre Channel Tape Drives attached to the 2109 switch are for exclusive use by the Model A60 Controller and can be accessed only from ESCON and FICON host systems through the Model A60. The second Fibre Channel port on the 3590 Tape Drive cannot be attached to another 2109 or open systems server Fibre Channel adapter.
  • Magstar 3590 Tape Drives with Fibre Channel Attachment (#3510 or #9510) cannot be intermixed on the same 3590 Model A60 Controller with Magstar 3590 Tape Drives with Ultra SCSI attachments.
  • A 1.6 meter rack (such as the IBM 9309 Model 002, 7014 Model S00, or 7015 Model R00) will accommodate a 3590 Model A60 Controller with up to four SCSI attached 3590 Tape Drives. However, if 3590 E Model Fibre Channel Tape Drives are attached to a Model A60 Controller, a 1.6 meter rack will accommodate only up to two 3590 E Model Fibre Channel Tape Drives with a Model A60 Controller and a 2109 Model S16 SAN Fibre Channel Switch. An IBM 7014 Model T00 (1.8 meter rack) or Model T42 (2.0 meter rack) can accommodate up to four 3590 E Model Fibre Channel Tape Drives with a Model A60 Controller and a 2109 Model S16 SAN Fibre Channel Switch.
