Overview

The AS/400e™ SB2 and SB3 servers are customized versions of the Models 830 and 840.

They are tuned to deliver processing power focused on dedicated CPU-intensive serving for the middle-tier of a multiplier environment.

The large SMP and base memory configurations (up to 24 GB) can satisfy these specialized computing requirements.

DASD space is limited (in relation to database servers or other multipurpose servers offered by IBM) to minimize the overuse of CPU cycles for tasks unrelated to "pure" application serving.

When a single AS/400e middle-tier server is not enough, employ multiple SB2 and SB3 models to push an AS/400e backend database server to its full potential.

The AS/400e SB2 , with an 8-way processor complex, offers:

  • 12 GB of main storage
  • Four 8.58 GB disk units

Additional disk space can be configured by using larger 17.5 GB disk drives.

The AS/400e SB3 gives you two processor options:

  • 12-way processor complex with 16 GB of main storage and up to 6 arms of disk storage
  • 24-way processor complex with 24 GB of main storage and up to 8 arms of disk storage

The minimum disk storage for the AS/400e SB3 consists of four 8.58 GB disk units. Additional disk space can be configured by using larger 17.5 GB disk drives and/or adding additional DASD units.

For more information on Models 830 and 840, refer to Hardware Announcement 100-174 , dated June 12, 2000.

A minimum functional SB2 server consists of the base server unit and selected priced features. Included in the base server are the physical package and power elements, 12 GB of main storage, a DASD controller, and an I/O controller.

Features that must be purchased include a processor, minimum DASD, a CD-ROM unit, and a system console/communications adapter.

  • Processor: #2315 Model SB2 8-Way Processor

  • Integrated Disk Units

Device Parity Protection-All (#0041) is the default setting for disk data protection; however, it may be removed. Four of the following disk units (of equal capacity) must be on the order. If four 17.54 GB disk units are on the order, RAID or mirroring is required (cannot exceed the usable DASD capacity for this model).

    • #4314 8.58 GB Disk Unit (Default)
    • #4317 8.58 GB 10,000 rpm Disk Unit
    • #4324 17.54 GB Disk Unit

  • Internal Battery Backup/Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

Models SB2 and SB3 include an internal battery automatically activated in the event of utility power loss. The battery provides full operating power for a short time to all components within the system unit, but not to any external components. This can allow the system to run uninterrupted if utility power is lost for a short time (less than 30 seconds). For longer power outages, the system will use the battery to attempt an orderly shutdown to avoid losing data in main storage that has not been written to disk. You benefit from faster recovery when the system is restarted after utility power returns. An external UPS is recommended to protect the system unit and any external components against longer utility power outages. A UPS can allow the system to run uninterrupted for longer than 30 seconds when power is lost, and can maintain power long enough to ensure that the system successfully completes a shutdown to avoid losing data.

Optional Features: To get full value and productivity from your server, a comprehensive selection of optional features is available for the AS/400e server SB2. Some are new. Others were previously available.

'-------------------------------------------------'

A Word on CPW Values

Processor CPW values are not valid representations of performance characteristics for AS/400e middle-tier servers due to the limited amount of disk attachability. Disk space is not a high priority for middle-tier servers performing CPU-intensive work because they are always connected to another computer acting as the database server in a multitier implementation.

Performance information related to the capabilities of AS/400e middle-tier servers can be found in the AS/400 Performance Capabilities Reference at:

Software vendor specific sizing information should be evaluated when considering the use of an AS/400e middle-tier server. Competency centers or vendor Web sites can provide general guidance related to the appropriate use of middle-tier (such as application) servers for various customer scenarios.

For example, performance measurements for an AS/400e middle-tier server when used to support the application server level of an SAP R/3 implementation can be obtained through the IBM/SAP International Center-of-Competence in Walldorf, Germany, at:

Additional performance data related to SAP defined benchmarks that demonstrate AS/400e server scalability in a multitier environment can also be obtained through IBM/SAP competence centers or the SAP Web page at:

Product Positioning

The AS/400e middle-tier servers provide significantly better price/performance over an equivalently configured Model 830 or 840 when used to satisfy the CPU-intensive requirements of a multitier implementation. Conversely, Models 830 and 840 provide the required balance of database processing capabilities coupled with CPU-intensive processing performance in a single server footprint.

The AS/400e middle-tier servers are particularly suited for environments with the following characteristics:

  • Minimal database needs
  • Minimal disk storage needs
  • Large increments of base memory required
  • Minimal upgrade importance
  • Need for high-speed/reliable connectivity to other AS/400e servers
  • No LPAR requirements
  • Limited requirements for controllers (maximum three)

Features

Features can be added and removed from AS/400 models by ordering new features, removing existing features, or doing feature conversions, if available.

Feature conversions are used when it is necessary to physically change an installed feature. New parts will be shipped, and the removed or replaced parts become the property of IBM.

The addition of a new feature and removal of an installed feature does not involve any credit. Unless otherwise specified, a removed feature remains the property of the customer. Feature removals not associated with a model upgrade or feature conversion may be subject to a charge.

Processor features for the AS/400e™ SB2 and SB3 servers are IBM installable. AS/400e server to AS/400e server interchange of processor features is AS/400 system password protected. AS/400e server to AS/400e server interchange of processor features outside IBM standard practices and procedures may void SB2 and SB3 server warranty and/or service contracts.

System Configuration

All system units have locations for features including processors, main storage, power, expansion, disks, tapes, CD-ROM, and IOPs. Some restrictions may apply to certain combinations of features. The configurator contains the rules and performance considerations for placement of these features, and should be used to ensure a valid configuration. The use of performance tools may also help in optimizing a configuration to match a specific set of requirements.

Customer Setup (CSU) Features

Some features are designated CSU. On MES orders where all features are CSU, the customer installs all features. IBM installation is available for a charge, under normal service contracts. On MES orders that contain a mix of IBM and CSU features, the customer may choose to have the IBM service representative install all features (including those designated as CSU).

Internal Disk Unit Controllers: For Models SB2 and SB3 one disk unit controller (#9748) is required in the system unit. No other disk unit controllers are allowed in the system unit.

#9748 Base PCI Disk Unit Controller: The #9748 is an Ultra2 SCSI controller with a 26 MB write-cache that provides RAID-5 protection and compression for internal disk units and also supports internal tape units and CD-ROM units.

#9748 supports both compression and non-compression modes. The mode of operation is determined by a hardware jumper. #9748 is shipped in non-compression mode. By moving the hardware jumper, the controller will function in compression mode.

In addition to providing RAID-5 protection for disks, #9748 is also designed to work as a high performance controller for disks protected by system mirroring or disks with no protection. In the RAID-5 configuration, disk unit protection is provided at less cost than mirroring, and with greater performance than system checksums.

#9748 also supports #4331, 1.6 GB Read Cache Device, which provides increased performance. #4331 is supported only when #9748 is not in compression mode.

The #9748 controller supports a maximum of four disk units on the SB2 and eight disk units on the SB3. A minimum of four disk units of the same capacity are needed for a valid RAID 5 configuration. A maximum of four arrays are allowed per controller, with a maximum of 10 disk units allowed per array. All disk units in an array must be of the same capacity. Parity is spread across four disk units for arrays of four to seven disk units. Parity can be spread across either four or eight disk units for arrays of eight to ten disk units. For systems started with eight to ten disk units in an array, the parity for that array will be spread across eight disk units. For systems that are started with fewer than eight disk units in an array and later field upgraded to eight, nine, or ten disk units, the RAID function must be stopped and then started before the parity will be spread across eight disk units.

The #9748 controls up to two removable media devices (internal tape or CD-ROM).

Prerequisite: Available PCI slot in the base PCI Node IOP.

Magnetic Media Controllers

#2749 PCI Ultra Magnetic Media Controller: #2749 provides Ultra SCSI attachment capability for an external tape device or an external optical device. Refer to the Supported Devices section for a list of tape and optical devices supported by the #2749.

#2768 PCI Magnetic Media Controller: #2768 provides Ultra SCSI attachment capability for an external tape and/or an external CD-ROM device with a Single Ended SCSI interface. Refer to the Supported Devices section for a list of devices supported by the #2768.

Maximum Number of Magnetic Media Controllers per System

  • Controllers: #2749 + #2768
  • Systems:
    • SB2: 7
    • SB3: 9

#2744 PCI 100 Mbps Token-Ring IOA: The PCI 100 Mbps Token-Ring IOA provides a single attachment to a 100 Mbps, 16 Mbps, or 4 Mbps token-ring network. The feature consists of an IOA card and internal code that supplies IEEE 802.5 Media Access Control (MAC) and IEEE 802.2 Logical Link Control (LLC) functions. This IOA operates in half- or full-duplex mode.

A 2.44 meter (8-ft) token-ring cable is included with this feature. As an alternative, you can attach a separately priced twisted-pair cable to the RJ45 connection on the IOA. IBM Cabling System patch cables, included with this feature, can increase the length as required.

Prerequisites: If #2744 is used on the #2790 PCI Integrated Netfinity Server, one #0223 (100 Mbps Token-Ring Specify) is required for each #2744.

PCI Card slots required: One

#4723 PCI 10 Mbps Ethernet IOA: The PCI 10 Mbps Ethernet IOA provides single attachment to one Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detect (CSMA/CD) LAN. The feature consists of an adapter card and internal code that supplies Ethernet version 2 and IEEE 802.3 Media Access Control (MAC) plus IEEE 802.2 Logical Link Control (LLC) functions. The Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 IOA is capable of operating in half- or full-duplex mode.

#4750/#4751 PCI ISDN BRI IOAs: #4750/#4751 are 4-port (8-channel) ISDN BRI (basic rate interface) PCI features. Using DSP technology, each BRI channel contains a fully integrated modem that supports both V.90 server and client functions. There are two options for connecting with #4750 or #4751: A remote analog modem may make a connection through the telephone network to a #4750/#4751 B-channel, or a remote ISDN device may make a digital ISDN connection to a #4750/#4751 B-channel. Each port consists of a 2B+D configuration. #4750, PCI ISDN BRI U IOA, is the U-bus (2-wire) version IOA used primarily within North America. #4751, PCI ISDN BRI S/T IOA, is the S/T-bus (4-wire) version IOA used primarily outside of North America. A wrap cable/plug and four 30-ft RJ-45 to RJ-45 network cables are shipped with the adapter.

The following protocols may run simultaneously on all eight B-channels and in any combination per port:

  • PPP — may connect to remote ISDN devices or to remote synchronous or asynchronous analog modems.
  • IDLC — may connect to remote ISDN devices over a digital connection.
  • G3 Fax Protocol — may connect to remote analog fax devices or ISDN devices that support G3 Fax. G3 Fax works with Facsimile Support/400 and AS/400 Fax for Domino. The ISDN BRI IOAs support:
    • Two-dimensional G3 images for minimum connect time
    • ECM Mode for guaranteed image integrity
    • AFP™ data streams with bar codes, overlays, signatures
    • Fax Banner with date and time stamps on a page basis
    • DTMF tone detection for inbound fax routing

#4761 PCI Integrated Analog Modem: Based on the latest DSP technology, #4761 allows the modem function to be integrated into the IOA and supports multiple analog modem ports (8-phone lines). Each port supports V.90 client functions and other modem standards such as V.34. #4761 will run the following protocols without an external modem:

  • PPP
  • SDLC
  • Fax

A wrap cable/plug and eight 30-ft phone cables are shipped with each #4761. An async line description is required for fax, and can only be used for fax.

#4801 PCI Cryptographic Coprocessor: The new PCI Cryptographic Coprocessor (#4801) provides a rich set of data encryption and authentication services for applications requiring high security. Cryptographic keys are stored in a tamper-resistant module on the coprocessor. This feature is ideally suited for banking and financial applications; however, with the tamper-resistant module, the coprocessor can be used to implement other advanced applications such as electronic postage metering.

Application services provided by the coprocessor include:

  • Data encryption using Tripe-DES (Data Encryption Standard)
  • Digital signature generation/verification using RSA public-key cryptography
  • Data integrity checking using MD5 and SHA-1 secure hash algorithms
  • Financial PIN support for Automatic Teller Machine networks
  • Basic SET (Secure Electronic Transaction) block operations
  • Secure storage of keys in a Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-1 Level 3 tamper-resistant module

The PCI Cryptographic Coprocessor is compatible with the IBM Common Cryptographic Architecture (CCA). OS/400® Option 35 CCA Cryptographic Service Provider is required along with one of the AS/400 Cryptographic Access Provider licensed program products (LPP) — both Option 35 and the LPP are no-charge.

#4801 can be installed in the SB2 and SB3 system units.

Security, Auditability, and Control

AS/400e servers use the security and auditability features of OS/400. Use of these facilities is optional. The security measures supplied by OS/400 are designed to reduce the risk of users changing or destroying data resources, but do not prevent it. The OS/400 security features include the use of passwords, a security option to limit a user to only those functions provided by customer-designed menus, and a security option to limit read/write access for files, libraries, and folders during normal operations. To achieve increased security, the OS/400 controls should be combined with physical security, division of duties and other appropriate measures.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
