June 12, 2000 IBM AS/400e Middle-Tier Servers...For Extreme BusinessAt a GlanceDedicated CPU-intensive processing at a competitive price
For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: AE001). OverviewThe AS/400e SB2 and SB3 servers are customized versions of the Models 830 and 840. They are tuned to deliver processing power focused on dedicated CPU-intensive serving for the middle-tier of a multiplier environment. The large SMP and base memory configurations (up to 24 GB) can satisfy these specialized computing requirements. DASD space is limited (in relation to database servers or other multipurpose servers offered by IBM) to minimize the overuse of CPU cycles for tasks unrelated to "pure" application serving. When a single AS/400e middle-tier server is not enough, employ multiple SB2 and SB3 models to push an AS/400e backend database server to its full potential. The AS/400e SB2 , with an 8-way processor complex, offers:
Additional disk space can be configured by using larger 17.5 GB disk drives. The AS/400e SB3 gives you two processor options:
The minimum disk storage for the AS/400e SB3 consists of four 8.58 GB disk units. Additional disk space can be configured by using larger 17.5 GB disk drives and/or adding additional DASD units. For more information on Models 830 and 840, refer to Hardware Announcement 100-174 , dated June 12, 2000.

A Word on CPW ValuesProcessor CPW values are not valid representations of performance characteristics for AS/400e middle-tier servers due to the limited amount of disk attachability. Disk space is not a high priority for middle-tier servers performing CPU-intensive work because they are always connected to another computer acting as the database server in a multitier implementation. Performance information related to the capabilities of AS/400e middle-tier servers can be found in the AS/400 Performance Capabilities Reference at: Software vendor specific sizing information should be evaluated when considering the use of an AS/400e middle-tier server. Competency centers or vendor Web sites can provide general guidance related to the appropriate use of middle-tier (such as application) servers for various customer scenarios. For example, performance measurements for an AS/400e middle-tier server when used to support the application server level of an SAP R/3 implementation can be obtained through the IBM/SAP International Center-of-Competence in Walldorf, Germany, at: Additional performance data related to SAP defined benchmarks that demonstrate AS/400e server scalability in a multitier environment can also be obtained through IBM/SAP competence centers or the SAP Web page at:
Model SB3 Minimum Functional Server (V4R5)A minimum functional SB3 server consists of the base server unit and selected priced features. Included in the base server are the physical package and power elements, 16 GB or 24 GB of main storage, a DASD controller, and an I/O controller. Features that must be purchased include a processor, minimum DASD, a CD-ROM unit, and a system console/communications adapter.
Optional Features: To get full value and productivity from your server, a comprehensive selection of optional features is available for the AS/400e server SB3. Some are new. Others were previously available. Refer to the Features section for descriptions of new features and specify codes.
Year 2000These products are Year 2000 ready.
Euro CurrencyThese products are not impacted by euro currency. Product PositioningThe AS/400e middle-tier servers provide significantly better price/performance over an equivalently configured Model 830 or 840 when used to satisfy the CPU-intensive requirements of a multitier implementation. Conversely, Models 830 and 840 provide the required balance of database processing capabilities coupled with CPU-intensive processing performance in a single server footprint. The AS/400e middle-tier servers are particularly suited for environments with the following characteristics:

EZ-SetupEZ-Setup simplifies your AS/400® setup by providing a browser-like GUI interface and an easy-to-follow sequence of dialogs on a PC that is attached to an AS/400 using the Operations Console cable. The dialogs step you through the setup process and minimize decisions where possible. After you have completed your initial setup, you are given the opportunity to continue with The Next Step (see below), or to launch Operations Navigator. The Next Step resides on the same CD as EZ-Setup. EZ-Setup is delivered on a CD shipped with the AS/400 system hardware. The code runs on a PC under Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000, and requires the Operations Console cable connected to the host AS/400. There are two components to EZ-Setup.
The EZ-Setup Wizard leads you through these tasks:
The Next Step is a set of HTML pages the user reads before performing additional setup tasks. The Next Step is used after the EZ-Setup wizard has completed. Topics include:
The Information Center is available:
When it comes to AS/400 technical reference and user information, IBM's goal is to provide a single interface through which you can search, retrieve, view, and print this AS/400 information. Whether you're looking for new or existing information, the first place to go for AS/400 technical reference and user information is the AS/400 Information Center.
Technical Studio: Access through the Information Center or visit: This is the place to go when you're looking for workshops, tools, and technical information to expand the strategic use of AS/400 in your enterprise. Solutions are shown for various business needs. For each solution, a very specific path is defined that applies to most customers (typically combining several AS/400 software technologies). Each path is a series of simple step-by-step procedures. Major categories in the Technical Studio include:
Individual topics recently added to the Technical Studio include:
FeaturesFeatures can be added and removed from AS/400 models by ordering new features, removing existing features, or doing feature conversions, if available. Feature conversions are used when it is necessary to physically change an installed feature. New parts will be shipped, and the removed or replaced parts become the property of IBM. The addition of a new feature and removal of an installed feature does not involve any credit. Unless otherwise specified, a removed feature remains the property of the customer. Feature removals not associated with a model upgrade or feature conversion may be subject to a charge. Processor features for the AS/400e SB2 and SB3 servers are IBM installable. AS/400e server to AS/400e server interchange of processor features is AS/400 system password protected. AS/400e server to AS/400e server interchange of processor features outside IBM standard practices and procedures may void SB2 and SB3 server warranty and/or service contracts. System Configuration All system units have locations for features including processors, main storage, power, expansion, disks, tapes, CD-ROM, and IOPs. Some restrictions may apply to certain combinations of features. The configurator contains the rules and performance considerations for placement of these features, and should be used to ensure a valid configuration. The use of performance tools may also help in optimizing a configuration to match a specific set of requirements. Customer Setup (CSU) Features Some features are designated CSU. On MES orders where all features are CSU, the customer installs all features. IBM installation is available for a charge, under normal service contracts. On MES orders that contain a mix of IBM and CSU features, the customer may choose to have the IBM service representative install all features (including those designated as CSU). Internal Disk Unit Controllers: For Models SB2 and SB3 one disk unit controller (#9748) is required in the system unit. No other disk unit controllers are allowed in the system unit. #9748 Base PCI Disk Unit Controller: The #9748 is an Ultra2 SCSI controller with a 26 MB write-cache that provides RAID-5 protection and compression for internal disk units and also supports internal tape units and CD-ROM units. #9748 supports both compression and non-compression modes. The mode of operation is determined by a hardware jumper. #9748 is shipped in non-compression mode. By moving the hardware jumper, the controller will function in compression mode. In addition to providing RAID-5 protection for disks, #9748 is also designed to work as a high performance controller for disks protected by system mirroring or disks with no protection. In the RAID-5 configuration, disk unit protection is provided at less cost than mirroring, and with greater performance than system checksums. #9748 also supports #4331, 1.6 GB Read Cache Device, which provides increased performance. #4331 is supported only when #9748 is not in compression mode. The #9748 controller supports a maximum of four disk units on the SB2 and eight disk units on the SB3. A minimum of four disk units of the same capacity are needed for a valid RAID 5 configuration. A maximum of four arrays are allowed per controller, with a maximum of 10 disk units allowed per array. All disk units in an array must be of the same capacity. Parity is spread across four disk units for arrays of four to seven disk units. Parity can be spread across either four or eight disk units for arrays of eight to ten disk units. For systems started with eight to ten disk units in an array, the parity for that array will be spread across eight disk units. For systems that are started with fewer than eight disk units in an array and later field upgraded to eight, nine, or ten disk units, the RAID function must be stopped and then started before the parity will be spread across eight disk units. The #9748 controls up to two removable media devices (internal tape or CD-ROM). Prerequisite: Available PCI slot in the base PCI Node IOP.
