OverviewWhen it comes to your tape cartridge capacity, more is definitely better. So you'll be glad to know that the IBM Magstar® 3590 Tape Drive now supports the new 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape (Extended Length Cartridge). This new tape has a native capacity of 40 GB on the 3590 Model E11 and E1A Tape Drives (E Models) and 20 GB on the 3590 Model B11 and B1A Tape Drives (B Models). All 3590 B Models and E Models shipped on or after March 3, 2000, will support the Extended Length Cartridge. The 3590 Extended Media Support is also available as an MES upgrade feature on currently installed Magstar 3590 B Model and E Model Tape Drives, thus protecting your current investment. But IBM protects your investment in tape cartridges, too. All models of the Magstar 3590 Tape Drive will continue to support the 3590 High Performance Cartridge Tape (Standard Length Cartridge). High performance, reliability, data integrity and cartridge capacity are recognized hallmarks of IBM's Magstar Tape Subsystem. Support for this new tape cartridge takes those qualities to the next level, delivering increased price performance for 3590 customers. Key PrerequisitesThe IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem with 3590 Extended High Performance Tape Cartridge support continues to be supported on selected S/390®, AS/400®, RS/6000®, Sun, Hewlett Packard, and Windows NT systems. It also continues to be supported in both stand-alone and automation solutions. The appropriate attachment adapter and software are required. The Extended Length Cartridge is not supported for use in the 3495 Tape Library or the 3494 Model B16 or B18 Virtual Tape Server. It is also not supported on 3590 Tape Drives attached to the 3591 Model A01 Tape Control Unit.
DescriptionThe IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem with 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape support now provides:
The new 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape (Extended Length Cartridge) is distinctly labeled with green labels, a green leader block, and two green inserts with identification notches. All 3590 Model B11, B1A, E11, and E1A Tape Drives shipped on or after March 3, 2000, will support the 3590 Extended Length Cartridge. Features are available to add support of the Extended Length Cartridge to all 3590 Tape Drives installed prior to March 3, 2000. When doing a model conversion of a 3590 B Model to an E Model, the Extended Media Support must now also be added to that conversion. Features are also available to add support of the Extended Length Cartridge to the 3590 Tape Subsystem or 3494 Tape Library, for any tape subsystem that will contain the new Extended Length Cartridges. These features will provide the subsystem maintenance information and microcode updates required to support the new cartridges.
The Extended Length Cartridge is not supported for use in the 3495 Tape
Library or the 3494 Model B16 or B18 Virtual Tape Server. It is
also not supported on 3590 Tape Drives attached to the 3591

Product PositioningThe Magstar 3590, IBM's highest performance tape subsystem, provides high capacity and reliability for the S/390, AS/400, RS/6000, and a variety of IBM and non-IBM UNIX® and Windows NT systems. It offers significant enhancements in performance, capacity, data integrity, reliability, and availability over IBM 3480, 3490, or 3490E tape drives. The Magstar 3590 may also relieve backup time and space constraints and provide the increased capacity needed to support today's growing disk backup requirements. (Although the 3590 provides the capability of very high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved.) IBM provides the Magstar 3590 in a wide range of product offerings to meet a diverse set of customer requirements. A single investment in Magstar technology can extend capacity as well as provide performance benefits to a broad array of storage solutions:
Magstar 3590 in a 3494 The Magstar 3590 offers the greatest performance and capacity for use in the IBM Magstar 3494 Tape Library. The tape drives and cartridge slots of the 3494 can be shared between multiple heterogeneous platforms, giving you greater flexibility. StorageTek Libraries The Magstar 3590 can be used with the StorageTek 4410 and 9310 Automated Cartridge Systems (ACS) in a SCSI or S/390 environment using Magstar 3590 Tape Drives in Magstar 3590 Model C12/14 Frames and 3590 ESCON® Controllers. This provides the Magstar benefits of increased capacity, reliability, and performance over 18-/36-track technology or StorageTek drive alternatives. Moving Magstar 3590 to Different Storage Solutions Magstar 3590 offers configuration flexibility and long range investment protection in its unique ability to be used, and re-used, in multiple storage solutions. Capitalizing on IBM's Seascape architecture, 3590 Magstar Tape Drives are storage assets that can be moved from storage solution to storage solution. By adding features and doing model conversions, Magstar tape drives can be transformed to fit into stand-alone subsystems, StorageTek silos, or IBM 3494 automated solutions (including the Magstar Virtual Tape Server). An initial investment can now grow with your ever-changing business requirements. Reference InformationRefer to Hardware Announcement 100-048 , dated February 29, 2000.

Technical InformationSpecified Operating EnvironmentHardware RequirementsThe Magstar 3590 Model B11, B1A, E11, or E1A Tape Drives can now utilize either the new 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape (Extended Length Cartridge) or the 3590 High Performance Cartridge Tape (Standard Length Cartridge). The Extended Length Cartridge has a native capacity that is twice the capacity of the Standard Length Cartridge. Many solutions require that all 3590 drives in the subsystem have the Extended Media Support capability to optimize drive/media allocation. If Extended Length Cartridges are used, IBM recommends updating all tape drives, to allow flexibility to mount Extended Length Cartridges on any tape drive. However, if Extended Length Cartridges are to be used only on tape drives that are part of a defined subset, then all drives in that subset must be updated. Some examples are:
All 3590 Tape Drive shipments on or after March 3, 2000, will have the support for the Extended Length Cartridge. MES feature number 5780 (Extended Media Support BXX) is also available to add this support feature to existing Magstar 3590 Model B11 or B1A Tape Drives (B Models). MES feature number 5781 (Extended Media Support EXX) is also available to add this support feature to existing Magstar 3590 Model E11 or E1A Tape Drives (E Models). Feature number 9780 (Extended Media Support) must be added to the Magstar 3494 Model L10, L12, L14, D12, or D14 to provide the library manager support for any 3494 Tape Library that will contain the new Extended Length Cartridges. If 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape is used in the 3494 Tape Library, this feature must be on the 3494 Model D12 or D14 Drive Unit containing the 3590 Tape Drives with Extended Media Support, and also on the 3494 Model L10, L12, or L14 Control Unit frame. Feature number 9780 (Extended Media Support) must be added to the Magstar 3590 Model A14, C12, or C14 to provide the subsystem support for the new Extended Length Cartridges. If 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape is used in any 3590 Tape Drive installed in that 3590 Model A14, C12, or C14, then this feature must be installed on all the tape drives in that 3590 Model A14, C12, or C14 frame also. Unlabeled and uninitialized Extended Length Cartridges can be included with the order of a new 3590 Model B11 or E11 Tape Drive (by specifying #8140), Model C12 or C14 Silo Compatible Frame (by specifying #8240), or 3494 Tape Library frame (by specifying #8610). Labeled or initialized Extended Length Cartridges can be ordered using machine type 3599 or purchased through Priority Fulfillment Services. Refer to Hardware Announcement 100-048 , dated February 29, 2000. Also refer to the Supplies section. 3590 B Model to E Model Tape Drive Conversions
When a 3590 B Model Tape Drive is converted to a 3590 E Model,
feature number 5781 (Extended Media Support EXX) must be included in
the MES order for that model conversion.
Software RequirementsFor the OS/390® environment, support for the Extended Length Cartridge is provided in DFSMS/MVS® Version 1.3 and higher. For other system environments, the software requirements are the same as the minimum current software requirements for the 3590 Models B11 and B1A or Models E11 and E1A. An update of the open systems device drivers should be obtained to ensure the Extended Length Cartridge is supported. Compatibility: Magstar 3590 Tape Drives with the Extended Media Support can read or write on either the new 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape or the 3590 High Performance Cartridge Tape. Limitations: To use the new 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape, the following features must be installed:
Many solutions require that all 3590 drives in the subsystem have the Extended Media Support capability to optimize drive/media allocation. If Extended Length Cartridges are used, IBM recommends updating all tape drives, to allow flexibility to mount Extended Length Cartridges on any tape drive. However, if Extended Length Cartridges are to be used only on tape drives that are part of a defined subset, then all drives in that subset must be updated. Some examples are:
The Magstar 3590 Model E11 or E1A Tape Drives can only read either type of cartridge written in 128-track format by the B Models, but it can read or write on either type of cartridge in 256-track format. The tape search time with the Extended Length Cartridge could be up to two times longer than with the Standard Length Cartridge.
The 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape is not supported for
