Configure-To-Order Ordering - Ordering Part Numbers:

To place a valid SAP order for a configured xSeries 306 three part numbers must be ordered for the standard rack models 1MX,2MX and four part numbers for models 1SX and 2SX These part numbers are for the basic Model designation and country specific packs. These are listed under the Required to Order section.

There are two option designations. The first designation is a REQUIRED designation to initiate a valid order, and the second is an OPTIONAL designation for further configurability of a Model.

    ORDERING OPTIONS TO BE INSTALLED

The following structure allows Customers/Business Partners to customise a xSeries 306 model to their needed configuration by ordering system memory, RAID adapter, hard disks(s), communications adapter, for installation during the manufacturing process.

    Compatibility

The xSeries 306 systems contain licensed system programs that include set configuration, set features, and test programs. System BIOS (BIOS modified to IBM specifications) is loaded from a "flash" EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the server and to maintain compatibility with many current software programs.

For detailed information about IBM and non-IBM devices, adapters, software, and network operating systems supported with xSeries servers, visit:

    http://www.ibm.com/pc/us/compat

Contact your IBM representative or Business Partner, or refer to the IBM Sales Manual for information on the compatibility of hardware and software for xSeries servers. The Sales Manual is updated periodically as new features and options are announced that support these servers.

    Limitations

    • The xSeries 306 servers support a maximum of 4 GB of system memory when you remove the original DIMMs and add a 1GB PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR UDIMM in each of the four DIMM slots. All supported system memory is addressable through DMA. These servers support 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB 333 MHz 72-bit DDR PC2700 ECC SDRAM registered DIMMs or PC3200 CL3 ECC DDR DDR UDIMM memory. All supported DIMMs can coexist in the same system but will operate at the speed of the slowest memory installed.

Refer to the Planning Information section or the IBM compatibility Web page for supported memory options.

    • To ensure proper air flow for cooling, the xSeries 306 server requires a rack with a perforated door.

    • Processor upgrades are not supported.

    • Use the version of ServerGuide shipped with the system, or a later version, to load software and drivers. Earlier versions of ServerGuide may not be compatible with the server.

Refer to the Software Requirements section for operating system limitations.

    Planning Information

    Customer Responsibilities

The xSeries 306 server is designated as customer setup. Customer setup instructions are shipped with system.

    Bay configuration

The xSeries 306 server contains four drive bays. Two bays contains the standard 1.44 MB, 3.5-inch slim-high diskette drive, and the slim-line standard CD-ROM drive. Two 3.5-inch, slim-high bays located side-by-side on the lower front section of the server support various SATA or SCSI HDD installation.

    Cabling

    • The xSeries 306 server contains an integrated IDE controller. It is cabled directly to the 24x-10x IDE CD-ROM.
    • xSeries 306 SATA models contain a two-drop SATA cable to support two SATA HDDs
    • xSeries 306 SCSI models contain a single-channel, Ultra320 SCSI adapter. A two-drop, 16-bit LVD SCSI cable is attached to the internal connector of this adapter to support one Ultra320 HDD. The second drop can be used to attach a second SCSI HDD.

    Rack installations

xSeries 306 1 U, rack-drawer models can be installed in a 19-inch rack cabinet designed for 26-inch deep devices, such as the NetBAY42 ER and NetBAY42 SR or NetBAY25 SR.

If using a non-IBM rack, the cabinet must meet the EIA-310-D standards with a depth of at least 28 inches. Also, adequate space (approximately two inches for the front bezel and one inch for air flow) must be maintained from the slide assembly to the front door of the rack cabinet to allow sufficient space for the door to close and provide adequate air flow.

    Power considerations

The xSeries 306 server includes a standard 300 W power supply. This power supply provides sufficient power to run the server fully configured with supported devices.

    Cable Orders

The dual 10/100/1000 Mbps, full-duplex Ethernet PCI controllers, standard with the xSeries 306 server, are connected directly to independent RJ-45 connectors. The RJ-45 connectors provide a 10BaseT, 100Base-TX or 1000Base-TX interface for connecting twisted-pair cable to the Ethernet network. Cabling is not included with the server. To connect the Ethernet controller to a repeater or switch, use an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends. For 100 Mbps operation, Category 5 cabling must be used. For 10 Mbps operation, Category 3, or better, cabling must be used.

There are no additional cabling requirements, other than for system power, keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections.

    Installability

The xSeries 306 server requires about 20 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install an operating system, additional adapters, or features.

    Packaging

    The system unit carton contains:

    Security, Auditability and Control

    Security and auditability features include:

    • Power-on and privileged access password functions provide controls who has access to the data and server setup program on the server.

    • Selectable boot sequence can prevent unauthorized installation of software or removal of data from the diskette drive.

These servers are intended to be installed and secured in a rack. It is a customer's responsibility to ensure that the server and rack installation are secure to prevent sensitive data from being removed.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
