Description

Solid-performing server subsystems

This uniprocessor entry server delivers solid, economical performance by coupling a 2.8 or 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 800 MHz front-side-bus processor with high-speed, PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM UDIMM and SATA storage or Ultra320 SCSI subsystems. It is also offered with an economical Intel Celeron 2.4 GHz processor.

The xSeries 206 server uses the Intel Core chipsets (Canterwood-ES) to optimize throughput from processors to memory, and to the 64-bit PCI-X bus.

  • 340-watt worldwide, voltage-sensing power supply with auto restart — Supports maximum configurations and minimizes operator intervention after a temporary power outage
  • Two full-speed fans (three on hot-swap SCSI models) plus one variable fan in the power supply that cools:

Systems management and control

xSeries 206 servers comply with the 2000 ATX implementation guidelines. These guidelines offer better control and manageability of a network.

  • Wake on LAN for legacy LAN adapters to remotely turn the server on from an off state
  • Wake on LAN and ASF 2.0 supported on integrated Ethernet controller
  • ASF 2.0 support legacy LAN adapters with this function
  • ASF 2.0, with secure remote power on and off
  • Flash EPROM write protection
  • SMBus isolation isolates one bus section and required system components during system power-down from other buses and components to prevent current leakage into devices without power
  • PXE support

The xSeries 206 server also features IBM Director, a powerful, highly integrated systems management software solution built on industry standards and designed for ease of use. Exploit your existing enterprise or workgroup management environments and use rich security to access and manage physically dispersed IT assets more efficiently over the Internet. It can help reduce costs through:

IT administrators can view the hardware configuration of remote systems in detail and monitor the usage and performance of critical components such as processors, HDDs, and memory.

The ServeRAID 6i+ controller provides among the best performance and capacity for workgroup xSeries servers, where hardware RAID is needed at an entry-level price. The new ServeRAID 6i+ integrated RAID controller is an intelligent RAID controller offering hardware-based RAID for increased data protection and server availability. It provides investment protection by supporting Ultra320 and Ultra160 HDD mixed configurations.

ServeRAID 6i+ delivers unmatched, industry-proven IBM reliability and quality with 128 MB ECC write-back-cache with battery backup capability. It is a 133 MHz, PCI-X adapter that supports standard RAID 0, 1, 5, and RAID 1E and 5EE level for optimized storage capacity. Compatibility: The xSeries 206 systems contain licensed system programs that include set configuration, set features, and test programs. System BIOS (flash BIOS modified to IBM specifications) is loaded from a "flash" EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the server and to maintain compatibility with many current software programs.

Contact your IBM representative, IBM Business Partner, or refer to the IBM Sales Manual for information on the compatibility of hardware and software for xSeries servers. The Sales Manual is updated periodically as new features and options are announced that support these servers.

Limitations

  • The xSeries 206 server supports 4.0 GB of PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM UDIMM or PC3200 CL3 ECC DDR SDRAM UDIMM memory when you add a 1 GB PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM UDIMM or PC3200 CL3 ECC DDR SDRAM UDIMM in each of the four DIMM slots. All supported system memory is addressable through DMA. This server supports 256 MB, 512 MB, and 1 GB PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM UDIMM or PC3200 CL3 ECC DDR SDRAM UDIMM. All supported DIMMs can coexist in the same system but will operate at the lowest speed memory installed. Refer to the Planning information section or the compatibility Web page for supported memory options.
  • Wake on LAN® is not supported if systems are improperly shut down.
  • The open 5.25-inch bay supports removable media devices, such as tape backup devices. It does not support HDD options.
  • Use the version of ServerGuide that ships with the system, or a later version, to load software and drivers. Earlier versions of ServerGuide may not be compatible with the server.

Customer responsibilities

xSeries 206 customer setup

The xSeries 206 server is designated as customer setup. Customer setup instructions are shipped with systems.

Standard IDE configurations

xSeries 206 uses the IDE interface for the CD-ROM drive. A two-drop SATA cable is used to attach up to two SATA HDDs.

Standard SCSI configurations

xSeries 206 models with a SCSI adapter are cabled internally with a five-drop, 16-bit wide LVD SCSI cable with a built-in active terminator at one end of the cable. The other end of the cable is attached to the internal 68-pin connector of the standard Ultra320 SCSI adapter. SCSI devices can be connected to any of the five cable connectors.

Supported memory options: The following memory options are supported:

  • IBM 512 MB PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM UDIMM (06P4054)

Rack installations: The xSeries 206 server can be converted to a rack-mounted unit by installing a 4Ux24D Tower-to-Rack Kit. The 4 U xSeries 206 can be installed in a 19-inch industry-standard rack such as:

  • NetBAY42 ER Cabinet
  • NetBAY42 SR Cabinet
  • NetBAY25 SR Cabinet

    If using a non-IBM rack, the cabinet must meet the EIA™-310-D standards with a depth of at least 28 inches. Also, adequate space (approximately two inches for the front bezel and one inch for air flow) must be maintained from the slide assembly to the front door of the rack cabinet to allow sufficient space for the door to close and provide adequate air flow.

Cable orders: The Gigabit full-duplex, Ethernet PCI controller, standard with the server, is connected directly to an RJ-45 connector. The RJ-45 connector provides a 10/100/1000Base-T interface for connecting twisted-pair cable to the Ethernet network. Cabling is not included with the server. To connect the Ethernet controller to a repeater or switch, use an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends. For 100/1000 Mbps operation, Category 5 cabling must be used. For 10 Mbps operation, Category 3, or better, cabling must be used.

There are no additional cabling requirements, other than for system power, keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections.

Installability: The xSeries 206 system requires about 30 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install an operating system, additional adapters, or features.

The xSeries 206 system is shipped as a single package. The country kit carton is contained inside the top portion of the system unit carton.

Security, auditability, and control

Security and auditability features include:

  • Power-on password (secured boot).
  • A mechanical lock allows the user to lock the system cover to prevent unauthorized personnel access to internal components of the server.
  • Selectable boot sequence prevents unauthorized installation of software or removal of data from the diskette drive.
  • Tie-down capability is available by using a common U bolt attached to the back frame.
  • Operation without a keyboard and display is supported after the server is configured with the appropriate network operating system. This minimizes the risk of unauthorized people tampering with the system software and configuration.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.

Warranty period: One year

Optional IBM features initially installed in an IBM system carry the same warranty period as the system. If installed after the initial system installation, they carry the balance of the system warranty or the optional feature warranty, whichever is greater.

Warranty service: If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the type of warranty service specified below for the machine. An IBM technician will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone. You must follow IBM's problem determination and resolution procedures. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. Service levels are response time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Customer replaceable unit (CRU) (for example, keyboard, mouse, speaker, memory, HDD, and other easily replaceable parts) service and on-site for other selected parts.

CRU service: IBM will ship CRU parts to you for your replacement. If IBM instructs you to return the replaced CRU, you are responsible for returning it to IBM in accordance with IBM's instructions. If you do not return the defective CRU, if IBM so instructs, within 30 days of your receipt of the replacement CRU, IBM may charge you for the replacement.

On-site service: IBM on-site repair (IOR), 9 hours per day, Monday through Friday excluding holidays, NBD response. IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well-lit, and suitable for the purpose. On-site service is not available in all countries, and some countries have kilometer or mileage limitations from an IBM service center. In those locations where on-site service is not available, the normal in-country service delivery is used.

Call IBM at 800-IBM-SERV (426-7378), to assist with problem isolation for hardware to determine if warranty service is required. Telephone support may be subject to additional charges, even during the limited warranty period.

International Warranty Service (IWS): IWS is available during the warranty period to customers who travel or relocate to countries where their computer is sold and serviced by IBM or IBM resellers authorized to perform warranty service. Eligible IBM computers are identified by their four-digit machine type.

You can obtain IWS through the method of service, such as CRU, depot, carry-in, or on-site, provided in the servicing country. Service methods and procedures vary by country, and some service or parts may not be available in all countries. Service centers in certain countries may not be able to service all models of a particular machine type. In addition, some countries may have fees and restrictions that apply at the time of service.

Maintenance services — ServiceElect and ServiceSuite™

ServiceElect and ServiceSuite provide hardware warranty service upgrades, maintenance, and selected annuity support services in one agreement.

Warranty service upgrade: During the warranty period, warranty service upgrade provides an enhanced level of on-site service for an additional charge. A warranty service upgrade must be purchased during the warranty period and is for a fixed term (duration). It is not refundable or transferable and may not be prorated. If required, IBM will provide the warranty service upgrade enhanced level of on-site service acquired by the customer. Service levels are response time objectives and are not guaranteed.

An IBM technician will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone. You must follow IBM's problem determination and resolution procedures. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. If applicable, parts that are considered CRUs will be provided as part of the machine's standard warranty CRU service.

IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well-lit, and suitable for the purpose.

Non-IBM parts support

Warranty service: IBM is now shipping machines with selected non-IBM parts that contain an IBM FRU part number label. These parts are to be serviced during the IBM machine warranty period. IBM is covering the service on these selected non-IBM parts as an accommodation to their customers, and normal warranty service procedures for the IBM machine apply.

Warranty service upgrades and maintenance services: Under certain conditions, IBM Integrated Technology Services repairs selected non-IBM parts at no additional charge for machines that are covered under a warranty service upgrade or maintenance services.

IBM Service provides hardware problem determination on non-IBM parts (adapter cards, PCMCIA cards, disk drives, memory, and so forth) installed within IBM systems covered under warranty service upgrade or maintenance services and provides the labor to replace the failing parts at no additional charge. If IBM has Technical Service Agreements with the manufacturers of the failing part, or if the failing part is an accommodations part (a part with an IBM FRU label), IBM may also source and replace the failing parts at no additional charge. For all other non-IBM parts, customers are responsible for sourcing the parts. Installation labor is provided at no additional charge, if the machine is covered under a warranty service upgrade or maintenance services.
