The way payments are processed by banks is undergoing significant change. Because payments are increasingly processed instantly, there is a dramatic payment-processing shift from batch to real time. These instant payment approaches require

  • Fast, predictable response time
  • Seamless scalability to accommodate unpredictable spikes in demand
  • Continuous availability
  • Highest levels of security.

IBM® Z hardware and the IBM z™/OS operating system are built to satisfy these client demands. To provide pricing flexibility for payments workloads on z/OS®, IBM intends to deliver a new Payments Solution that will provide a per-payment pricing option for IBM Financial Transaction Manager for z/OS deployments. This new offering directly ties operational cost to business value by basing the price of the solution on the number of production payments that are processed, rather than capacity that is used to process them.

This commercial offering will provide cloud-like pricing for a mission-critical payments application in an on-premise deployment or environment. It does not replace the existing pricing for IBM Financial Transaction Manager for z/OS and associated software products, but provides an additional commercial model to be utilized.

Two variants of the Payments Solution are planned:

  • A software-only option

The software-only variant requires an upfront client commitment in the form of IBM Financial Transaction Manager for z/OS licensing. Clients will then be invoiced monthly for the number of production payments that are processed. The price per payment will cover the cost of the following software stack. There is no, or negligible impact to the cost of existing workloads:

    • z/OS
    • IBM MQ for z/OS
    • IBM DB2® for z/OS
    • IBM Operational Decision Manager for z/OS

  • A software and hardware option

With this option, clients will be able to utilize IBM Z hardware provisioned by IBM for use only by the Payments Solution. The software and hardware variant will require the same upfront client commitment as the software-only variant, and also IBM Z hardware, if required. Clients will then be invoiced monthly for the number of production payments that are processed. The price per payment will cover the cost of the z/OS software stack that is described above and also the IBM Z hardware capacity, which will include high availability and disaster recovery capabilities. To determine the amount of hardware capacity that will be eligible for this option, an agreement between clients and IBM is required on the maximum number of concurrent payments to be processed.
