The IBM® Print Transform from AFP to Accessible PDF feature for z/OS® delivers new functionality. It builds on the base AFP to PDF Print Transform and is designed to automatically produce PDF documents that comply with the ISO 14289-1 PDF/UA standard and WCAG 2.0 AA. The capabilities of this optional, priced feature include:

  • The use of specific and mandatory tagging techniques enhances the navigation of the document. Automating transactional documents using the AFP to PDF transform with the Accessible PDF feature combines business rules to add the necessary tags and descriptions required to convert a PDF to an accessible PDF/UA document.
  • They allow readers to skip sections of content that are not of immediate interest and to easily move forward and backward through the document.
  • Graphical elements are tagged as "figures" and permit users to enter appropriate descriptions about what each figure depicts.
  • The natural language of the document is defined as well as changes to language used within the document. This is important for multilingual documents and permits speak-aloud software to use proper pronunciations appropriate to the language being used as it changes throughout the document.

Overview
Bottom rule

Providing documents that are in compliance with the regulations governing the delivery of accessible documents to blind, partially sighted, and cognitively disabled individuals is becoming increasingly important. The new IBM Print Transform from AFP to Accessible PDF feature can automate the creation of accessible documents that comply with the ISO 14289-1 PDF/UA standard and WCAG 2.0 AA. This new optional, priced feature builds on the base IBM Print Transform from AFP to PDF product (5655-TF1).

The base AFP to PDF Print Transform, working together with Infoprint Server for z/OS, an optional feature of IBM z/OS (5650-ZOS), can transform your output transparently, without rewriting any applications. This helps you gain increased flexibility and efficiency for your production operations by utilizing a wider choice of technology, protocols, and formats. Infoprint Server is an operational prerequisite, but is not required to install the transform products.

The Print Transform from AFP products for Infoprint Server for z/OS are designed to be an integral part of your z/OS-based enterprise output management infrastructure and may give you the flexibility and delivery options you need for output management. They allow you to print z/OS Advanced Function Printing (AFP)-based output on network-attached printers that support PCL, PostScript™, or PDF for personal or departmental use, without moving data or resources off of the z/OS system.

Print Transform from AFP products for Infoprint Server for z/OS deliver data conversion flexibility for z/OS

The new AFP to Accessible PDF Transform feature is designed to automate the process of creating accessible documents. When this new feature is included in the AFP to PDF transform process, it will automatically convert the transactional AFP input into an accessible PDF document which can comply with WCAG 2.0 AA or PDF/UA, the ISO standard for Accessible PDFs.

The new AFP to Accessible PDF Transform requires a special business rules input file to identify the necessary tags and updates required to convert the AFP transaction input into an accessible PDF. The expectation is that the person who creates the business rules file has an understanding of the standards for accessible documents.

The three Print Transform from AFP products for Infoprint Server for z/OS are intended to provide the foundation for more efficient ways to deliver critical business information to your clients, employees, suppliers, and partners.

Clients who need a high-availability, scalable output management system on z/OS to support thousands of printers and electronic output delivery are encouraged to order and use the z/OS optional, priced feature of Infoprint Server for z/OS and the Print Transform from AFP products for Infoprint Server for z/OS.

Specified operating environment

Hardware requirements

The Print Transform from AFP to Accessible PDF feature for Infoprint Server for z/OS, V1.2.1 requires an IBM Z server.

Software requirements

The Print Transform from AFP to Accessible PDF feature for Infoprint Server for z/OS, V1.2.1 requires:

  • z/OS V2.1 (5650-ZOS), or later.
  • Infoprint Server for z/OS, an optional, priced feature of z/OS, V2.1, or later. Infoprint Server is an operational prerequisite, but is not required to install the transform products.
  • Adobe™ Acrobat Viewer for viewing output transformed from AFP to PDF.

Performance considerations

Transforming print jobs from the data stream in which they were created to another data stream will use more system resources than printing the same job to a printer that supports the native data stream. The print file resulting from the transforms may be larger than the original input print file. The impact on system and network resources will vary depending upon the print volume, the print data streams processed, and the current utilization of the system and network resources.

Transform execution speed varies with the data stream type, job length, output resolution, screening algorithms (for images), level of encryption, and density and complexity of the pages in the print file. In particular, PostScript and PDF transforms vary greatly in complexity, and transform speeds may vary significantly for similar, but different jobs.

Note: Producing an accessible PDF requires additional CPU cycles and the resulting accessible PDF document will be larger than the comparable nonaccessible PDF document due to the required tagging information that must be embedded within the accessible PDF document.

Security, auditability, and control

The Print Transform from AFP to Accessible PDF feature for Infoprint Server for z/OS, V1.2.1 uses the security and auditability features of the host z/OS operating system.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
