Bottom rule

Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software is designed to optimize the activities of software design, creation, evolution, initial quality assurance, and maintenance with the objective of improving delivery speed, business agility, and Leanness in the context of a DevOps practice. To those ends it provides these high-level capabilities:

  • Speed and agility. Application comprehension and impact analysis tools that help you make decisions more quickly and shorten learning curves.
  • Speed. Intelligent editors, outline views, content assist, auto-completion, live syntax validation, context help, and other capabilities that help you implement your decisions more quickly.
  • Leanness. Initial code quality tools, such as code-generating wizards, static code analysis, code coverage analysis, profiling, unit test automation, cross-language and cross-platform debugger and a team debugging capability to help you minimize defect introduction, find introduced defects quickly, and fix them efficiently.
  • Leanness. Integrations with the broader IBM DevOps solution to:
    • Provide developers with collaboration tools and visibility to activities and status across the lifecycle from planning and requirements through change and configuration management, downstream testing and deployment, and customer feedback
    • Provide project stakeholders (such as, project managers, line managers, line-of-business leaders, and users) with better visibility to development processes and project health by making key status, quality, and risk information readily available in real time
  • Business agility. Part of a family of IBM Integrated Development Environments with a common look-and-feel and a common, cross-platform and cross-language debug architecture. Together these provide tools for developing multitier, multichannel (mobile) enterprise applications that leverage a wide variety of back-end systems and provide specialized tools for maintaining, extending, and modernizing COBOL, RPG, PL/1, EJB, and other applications

When Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software is used in combination with other IBM DevOps and Mobile solution components, it becomes an element of an integrated, end-to-end DevOps lifecycle solution for multiplatform and hybrid cloud development, which includes development of secure, multi-channel (mobile) applications that leverage systems of record that might run on any or all of AIX®, IBM i, Linux™, System z®, and Windows™ operating systems.

Within this solution, the specific role of IBM Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software is to impart development-time speed and Leanness to the activities of developing and maintaining Java™, JEE, Web 2.0, JavaScript, and hybrid mobile applications, especially when these will deploy to IBM WebSphere application servers and portal servers and to IBM Bluemix®.

Now Version 9.6 of Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software introduces significant new capabilities and general improvements and becomes even more effective in fulfilling its role in the IBM DevOps solution.

New capabilities

Note: For detailed listings and descriptions of the key capabilities provided by earlier versions of Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software, see IBM Knowledge Center.

These are the new capabilities and improvements:

  • Tooling support for WebSphere Application Server traditional V9 that includes:
    • Updated server tools
    • Tools for developing and deploying Java 8 and JEE 7 applications
    • Support for remote profiling and code coverage for WebSphere Application Server tradition V9 by using Rational Agent Controller V9.6
  • Updated tooling support to remain compatible with the most recent version of WebSphere Application Server Liberty Profile.
  • Inclusion of a WebSphere Application Server traditional V9 test environment. (As Version 9 is added, the WebSphere Application Server V8.0 test environment is removed. A Version 8.5, traditional test environment is still included, and the latest Liberty Profile test environment remains.)
  • A new framework for integrating your favorite Command Line Interface (CLI) tools into the IDE user experience. For the IBM perspective on why this matters, see Why CLI. For details on how to use this new capability, see the Integrating Command-Line tools in Rational Application Developer website.
  • New tools that support development of applications in a running Liberty and remote Docker image.
  • New Swagger-based tooling for REST API discovery (through Liberty server), and for generating clients and server skeletons from the discovered API specifications.
  • New capabilities for enhancing and exporting JUnit-level code coverage results, including source, to IBM Application Delivery Intelligence.
  • Tools support for JSR 352 Java Batch implementation.
  • Tools support for JAX-RS 2.0.
  • Support for import and export of Java JVMTI profiling filter (workspace filter is the default filter).
  • Currency: Eclipse Tools for Bluemix 1.0.8.
  • Updated Cloud Foundry (bug fixes and the integration of the new CF plugins from Eclipse).
  • New and updated, integrated Cordova CLI to Version 6.3.1. See the official announcement from Apache Cordova Cordova Tools Release.
  • Upgraded to include IBM SDK for Node.js 6.2.2.
  • Support for Eclipse 4.6.1 Neon.

Improvements and extensions to the product's JavaScript development tools include:

  • Support for JavaScript 5 and 6 (support was formerly limited to 3).
  • Significant improvements to content assist and autocomplete.
  • JavaScript unit testing is now more fully integrated into the product. The user experience for JavaScript unit testing is now comparable to the user experience for Java unit testing
  • A new integration with the Blanket.js JavaScript code coverage analysis framework. Similar to Java Code Coverage, these tools help developers assure and measure JavaScript initial code quality by analyzing what code is covered by automated tests. Among other things, you can now:
    • Configure projects and HTML pages to run JavaScript code coverage.
    • Run enabled HTML pages as JavaScript tests.
    • See code coverage results integrated into the JavaScript editors, when covered JavaScript files are opened
    • View test results in the JavaScript Test results view with progress bar, execution time and tests passed and failed.

Capability deprecations

The following capabilities are now deprecated in Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software as of Version 9.6.0.

Note that some of these deprecations were previously announced and are repeated here if you missed the earlier publications.

Content Deprecation text in Software Announcement Rationale Client recommendation
JSF 1.x tools and support of 1.x spec and runtime 215-380, dated September 1, 2015 End of spec life, lack of community support for Java Widget Library. Future removal from product will reduce footprint and improve performance. Move to JSF 2 or alternate programming model
Tools for SIP 1.0 215-380, dated September 1, 2015 Obsolete specification. Move to SIP 1.1
All Dojo tools and libraries 216-245, dated June 7, 2016 Response to marketplace evolution (growing popularity of JQuery over Dojo). Future removal from product would reduce footprint and improve performance. Move to JQuery

Capability removals

The following, previously deprecated capabilities are now removed from Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software V9.6.

Content Rationale Client recommendation
Visual (diagram-based) editing of Java and Enterprise JavaBeans™ code, by using UML notation Lack of any evidence that these features, as included with Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software, are used. Removal shrinks the product footprint and may improve performance. This capability continues to be available in the Rational Software Architect Designer family of offerings, which may be used in combination with Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software.
Service Component Architecture (SCA) development tools The SCA runtime in WebSphere Application Server has been deprecated. There is also no evidence that the SCA tools included with Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software are being used. Their removal shrinks the product footprint and may improve performance.
J2C Service Migration wizard This feature was a complement to capabilities of IBM WebSphere Application Developer Integration Edition, which has now been out of market and out of service for multiple years.
Page Designer Old feature, replacement feature with better usability and utility is available Use Rich Page Editor.
Support for SUSE Linux distributions on desktops IBM strategic decision (note however that WebSphere Application Server and the Rational Agent Controller component of Rational Application Developer continue to support various SLES-SLED distributions on servers)
Universal Test Client (UTC) Old feature supporting obsolete specs (EJB 1 and EJB 2) Adopt newer JEE technologies

Local test environment runtimes that are included with the product

Traditionally, each time a new version or release of Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software is delivered, it has included the newest version of WebSphere Application Server for Developers and also two older versions of that product. It has also the most recent version of WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core. For Version 9.6 of Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software that historic pattern would suggest inclusion of WebSphere Application Server for Developers V8, 8.5, and V9. However, it was announced that Version 8.0 will reach End of Service on a date that is earlier than when Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software V9.6 becomes eligible for End of Service. Therefore, Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software V9.6 does not include WebSphere Application Server for Developers V8.0.

In addition, it was announced that WebSphere Application Server V8.5 will phase out support for older versions of Java over the next few years, as Oracle Corporation begins to end support for those Java versions.

IBM highly recommends clients, who currently use older WebSphere Application Server versions, to move to WebSphere Application Server for V8.5 or WebSphere Application Server for V9.0 and the latest Java SE version (Java SE 8) due to potential security risks on earlier releases of WebSphere Application Server and Java as the older Java versions cease to be patched.

Details regarding the announcement of End of Service for WebSphere Application Server V7 and V8.0, and the details of how WebSphere Application Server V8.5 will phase out support for older Java versions, can be found in Software Withdrawal Announcement 916-143, dated September 13, 2016. This announcements also noted changes to operating systems supported by WebSphere Liberty, and WebSphere Application Server's adoption of the Continuous Delivery model and its implications for product support.

Inclusion of open source software

The set of installable images (also known as bills of material) for Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software includes some third-party, open source software components that are commonly used in combination with the product. This is done purely as a convenience to the customer. These components are provided "as delivered", and IBM does not assume any responsibility to provide technical support for them. Technical support of these components is the responsibility of the open source software communities that produce them. Customers are responsible to seek technical support directly from those communities. Also, such third-party components might not conform to IBM standards for its own commercial products, in areas such as software accessibility and internationalization. For example, such components might be English only.

To the extent that Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software implements specific points of integration with such third-party components, or includes software for installing such third-party components, IBM does assume responsibility for technical support of such integration or installation software.

At this time, these third-party components are included "as delivered" in the products' bills of material:

  • (Eclipse) EGit
  • (Eclipse) Eclipse Marketplace Client
  • (Apache) Cordova
  • (Pivotal Labs) the Jasmine testing framework for JavaScript
  • Cloud Foundry Eclipse Plugins
  • Cloud Foundry Command Line Interface
  • (blanketjs.org community) the Blanket.js JavaScript code coverage framework code

Product fulfillment

As of Version 9.5 and continuing with Version 9.6, Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software is now among the growing number of IBM software products that are fulfilled "electronic only", which means physical media kits (DVDs or CDs) are no longer manufactured.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be found on the IBM Accessibility website.

Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software 5724-J19 Authorized User
Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software 5724-J19 Floating User Single Install

Authorized User

Authorized User is a unit of measure by which the Program can be licensed. An Authorized User is a unique person who is given access to the Program. The Program may be installed on any number of computers or servers and each Authorized User may have simultaneous access to any number of instances of the Program at one time. Licensee must obtain separate, dedicated entitlements for each Authorized User given access to the Program in any manner directly or indirectly (for example, through a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means. An entitlement for an Authorized User is unique to that Authorized User and may not be shared, nor may it be reassigned other than for the permanent transfer of the Authorized User entitlement to another person.

Note: Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered users. In that case the following applies. Any computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures or applications from the Program or that is otherwise managed by the Program is considered a separate User of the Program and requires an entitlement as if that device were a person.

Floating User Single Install

Floating User Single Install is a unit of measure by which the Program can be licensed. A Floating User is a person who is accessing the Program at any particular point in time. An Install is an installed copy of the Program on a physical or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer. The Program may be installed on any number of computers or servers, but if the Floating User simultaneously accesses more than one Install of the Program, the Floating User requires a separate entitlement for each such Install. Licensee must obtain separate entitlements for each Floating User simultaneously accessing the Program on each Install in any manner directly or indirectly (for example, through a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means.

Note: Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered users. In that case the following applies. Any computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from the Program or that is otherwise managed by the Program is considered a separate User of the Program and requires an entitlement as if that device were a person.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a lawful, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
