Description
Bottom rule

IBM Operations Manager for z/VM, V1.6 improves operational monitoring and automation of a z/VM system, including those with Linux guests.

By providing connectivity between Operations Manager servers on separate z/VM systems, you can now:

  • Use events on one LPAR to trigger actions on other LPARs
  • Issue ad-hoc Operations Manager commands on other LPARs, while logged onto a single LPAR
Operations Manager for z/VM, V1.6 provides improved monitoring of the Operations Manager infrastructure by supporting rule and action processing on messages generated by the Operations Manager server and added to console views. In addition, new messages are displayed providing information on memory utilization and number of pending actions and a new command allows you to remove actions from the queue. Additional alerts are also sent to the system operator console for critical conditions.

Configuration of automated responses to rules, schedules, and monitors can now be more efficient with:

  • Additional substitution variables or symbolics for the name of the SSI cluster and the user ID of the main Operations Manager server
  • Multiple rules, schedules, and monitors calling the same action, each passing different symbolics or substitution variables
  • Reduced overhead of CP commands
  • The ability to issue mixed-case commands (to Linux guests, for example) without the overhead of EXEC processing
  • An option to delay execution of an action by a specified period of time
  • Support to run actions immediately without delay
  • A default NULL action to support rules and monitors that don't require an immediate action but are required for idle monitors

Syntax of commands and configuration statements in Operations Manager V1.6 is more flexible, supporting:

  • The ability to specify a host name (instead of a static IP address) when defining connectivity to other systems, making management of multiple z/VM systems and Operations Manager instances easier
  • The definition of groups within groups
  • Groups in authorization definitions
  • Syntax more familiar to non-z Systems users (for example, blank-delimited operands and values)

Management of console and log messages has been improved, including the ability to suppress blank lines from console views.

Sample configuration files and action routines have been updated to reflect the new features.

In addition, Operations Manager for z/VM, V1.6 includes all features and functions delivered as PTFs for V1.5:

  • Filtering console message rules by message class
  • Filtering rules, schedules, and monitors by z/VM system name
  • Including the IP address in syslog messages received by Operations Manager
  • Viewing console and log data by date range
  • Sample configuration files and action routines (REXX EXECs)

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be found on the IBM Accessibility website.

Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act

Operations Manager for z/VM, V1.6 is capable as of May 20, 2016, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) can be found on the IBM Accessibility website.

Engine-based Value Unit pricing

Engine-based Value Unit pricing for Operations Manager for z/VM is designed to provide a decreasing price curve as hardware capacities and workload grow, which may help improve price performance.

There may also be a price benefit when you grow your capacity. Additional capacity is not priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit. Instead, additional capacity is priced starting at the capacity (engines) on which Operations Manager for z/VM has already been installed.

Note: Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product.

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

A no-charge Subscription and Support registration record will be established for each designated machine where Operations Manager for z/VM is running. These no-charge Subscription and Support registration records will be linked to the billable Subscription and Support, and all billable Subscription and Support within the scope of the engine-based Value Units aggregation will be linked together.

Subscription and Support is an annual charge and should be kept at an annual term.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a lawful, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
