Description

Usability enhancements

  • The compiler now supports 64-bit applications with the LP(64) option.
  • The INITIAL attribute is now allowed on macro declare statements.
  • New JSON attributes JSONNAME and JSONOMIT provide more ways of handling JSON data.
  • The SUPPRESS attribute now accepts NOPADDING as a subattribute. When specified on a level-1 structure name, this causes the RULES(NOPADDING) compiler option to be ignored for that structure.
  • The compiler now issues a W-level message rather than an I-level message when attributes other than FIXED BIN(p,0) are used with the REFER option.
  • Some assignments to UNIONS, and more generally, to structures that contain UNIONS are now supported.
  • The new XMLCONTENT attribute provides the capability to generate tagless XML text.
  • Conversions that are performed by library calls produce informational messages IBM1058 or IBM2805 at compile-time. Bit-to-bit conversions done by calls to a library routine are now flagged with its own set of messages, IBM2825 and IBM2826. This makes it easier to exclude the bit-to-bit cases when changing the severity of the IBM1058 and IBM2805 messages.
  • The SYSADATA output now includes a record that encodes all the compiler options that are in effect for a compilation.
  • A warning message is now generated by the compiler if an attempt is made to specify a non-overridable option.
  • The new BRACKETS compiler option specifies the two symbols that the SQL preprocessor recognizes as the left and right brackets in SQL array references.
  • The new DECOMP compiler option causes the compiler to produce a listing section that shows all intermediate expressions and their attributes for all expressions used in the source program.
  • The DECIMAL option supports a new suboption called TRUNCFLOAT that provides finer control over how the compiler handles assignments of float to fixed decimal when truncation might occur.
  • Two new suboptions for the INSOURCE option, FIRST and ALL, provide control over how many source listings appear in the listing file.
  • The new NULLDATE compiler option allows the use of the SQL null date as a valid date.
  • The new OFFSETSIZE compiler option determines the size of OFFSET variables in 64-bit applications.
  • The RULES compiler option has two new suboptions:
    • The NOLAXSTMT suboption allows the detection of multiple statements on a line.
    • The NOUNREFBASED suboption can be used to find BASED variables that are declared but not referenced.
  • The NOPROCENDONLY suboption of the RULES compiler option has two new suboptions, ALL and SOURCE, that make it easier to enforce the rule that the END statement for every procedure must include the name of that procedure.
  • The XREF compiler option has two new suboptions, EXPLICIT and IMPLICIT, which gives the flexibility of including or excluding implicit variable references in the XREF listing.
New built-in functions, pseudovariables, and subroutines

  • The new BETWEENEXCLUSIVE, BETWEENRIGHTEXCLUSIVE, and BETWEENLEFTEXCLUSIVE built-in functions make it easier to write code that tests whether a variable is in between two specified values.
  • The new CHECKSUM built-in function can be used to get the checksum value for a buffer of data.
  • The new HEXDECODE and HEXDECODE8 built-in functions make it easy to translate character data that contains a hexadecimal representation of data into data with the corresponding value.
  • The new ICLZ built-in function provides a quick way to count the number of leading zeroes in an integer value.
  • The new MAINNAME built-in function returns the name of the MAIN function on the current calling chain.
  • The new PLIATTN built-in subroutine provides explicit control over where the compiler sets attention breakpoints.
  • The new ONSUBCODE2 built-in function gives a program more information about VSAM failures.
  • The new TIMESTAMP built-in function returns the current date and time in the z systems format of YYYY-MM-DD-HH.MI.SS.999999 . This format is now one of the valid date-time patterns that are supported in the various, date-time built-in functions.
  • Two new UTC date-time built-in functions UTCDATETIME and UTCSECS return the UTC date and time as a string and as a number of Lilian seconds.
  • The new UTF8STG built-in function makes it easier to write code that parses UTF-8 text.
  • The new UUID built-in function can be used to obtain a universally unique identifier.
Performance improvements

  • Enterprise PL/I now further exploits the vector facility features.
  • Some fixed decimal divisions with large precision are now done using the Decimal Floating-Point (DFP) facility.
SQL enhancements

  • The INDFOR attribute makes it easy to declare a structure of indicator variables to match another PL/I structure.
  • If the NULLDATE compiler option is specified, the SQL null date, with year, month, and day all equal to 1, is accepted as a valid date in some of the date-time built-in functions.
  • The SQL preprocessor now parses the DEFINE ALIAS, DEFINE ORDINAL, and DEFINE STRUCTURE statements.
  • To make it easier to change the severity of the DSNH030 SQL preprocessor message, DSNH030 is now given its own preprocessor message IBM3317.
Use of System Management Facilities records to ease administration

A new level of z/OS System Management Facilities (SMF) tracking support within Enterprise PL/I for z/OS, V5.1 allows you, when you have implemented sub-capacity tracking, to reduce your administrative reporting overhead.

SMF collects and records system and job related information that is used by the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool (SCRT) to report on sub-capacity products.

With Version 5.1, Enterprise PL/I for z/OS is instrumented so it can be tracked by SMF89 records. If you have enabled the collection of SMF70 and SMF89 records on your machine and you are using SCRT to report the usage of the PL/I compiler, you will no longer have to tell SCRT where your PL/I compiler runs. Enterprise PL/I for z/OS, V5.1 can now automatically be tracked by SMF89 records and is supported by SCRT Java release V23.13.4 and SCRT Classic release V23.7.4 . You must use SCRT Java release V23.13.4 or SCRT Classic release V23.7.4, or a later release, whenever you use Enterprise PL/I for z/OS, V5.1.

In conjunction with the SMF record support, system administrators can now define a disablement policy through the SYSx.PARMLIB(IFAPRDxx) parameter library. This client-requested feature can be used to disable the use of the Enterprise PL/I for z/OS, V5.1 compiler within a specific z/OS system.

You continue to gain the benefits of implementing sub-capacity for Enterprise PL/I for z/OS, V5.1 while reducing your administrative overhead.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a lawful, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.

Sub-capacity charges for VWLC products

Sub-capacity charges for VWLC products are based on product LPAR utilization capacity. Product LPAR utilization capacity for a VWLC product is the highest number of MSUs utilized by the combined LPARs in which a VWLC product runs concurrently during a reporting period. The number of MSUs is based on the highest observed rolling 4-hour average utilization used by the combination of the relevant LPARs during the reporting period.

Sub-capacity charges terms and conditions

z Systems software charges at less than full machine capacity for eligible VWLC products apply when z/OS is running in z/Architecture® (64-bit) mode on an IBM z Systems 900, no other MVS -based operating system is licensed to that server, and the required information is provided by the customer in accordance with the applicable terms.

Sub-capacity charges for a VWLC product is based on the utilization of the LPARs where/when the product executes. To obtain charges at less than full machine capacity for VWLC products, the customer is required to:

  • Sign and abide by the terms of the Attachment for IBM z Systems Workload License Charges - (Z125-6516).
  • Obtain the latest version of the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool.
  • Install any VWLC product and IBM e(logo)server z Systems 900 Licensed Internal Code (LIC) service required for sub-capacity charging. Required service will be listed on the IBM z Systems Software Pricing website.
  • Collect SMF data as required by the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool. Retain the collected SMF data for a period of not less than six months.
  • Use the IBM provided Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool to process the collected SMF data. The Sub-Capacity Report produced by the tool is used to determine required license capacity for the VWLC products. Required license capacity is determined based on the largest MSU value of a VWLC product running concurrently in all LPARs during the reporting period. IBM reserves the right to request the system data that supports these product-defined capacity values for a period of up to six months after the data was collected.
  • Provide an initial Sub-Capacity Report to begin to receive the benefits of less than full machine capacity charges. Sub-capacity charging will follow submission of a Sub-Capacity Report. There will be no retroactive application of sub-capacity charges.
  • Submit Sub-Capacity Reports monthly.
  • Submit Sub-Capacity Reports for all VWLC products with complete data for the entire reporting period to the email address and by the date specified in the current IBM z Systems Workload License Charges Exhibit (Z125-6324) and on the IBM z Systems Software Pricing website.

Sub-Capacity Reports that reflect a changed product defined capacity will be considered to be orders placed by the customer without further action on the customer's part, and IBM is authorized to make any resulting billing increase or decrease. To place an order for a new license or to discontinue licenses, move licenses between machines, report a hardware model upgrade, or enable or disable product features, the customer must contact IBM or their IBM Business Partner.
