Overview
Bottom rule

DB2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS is a high-performance appliance that integrates the IBM z Systems™ infrastructure with IBM PureData™ System for Analytics, powered by IBM Netezza® technology. It delivers a cost-effective, high-speed query engine to run business-critical reporting and complex business analytics workloads. These queries can now be executed orders of magnitude faster than was previously possible. The performance and cost of the Accelerator open up unprecedented opportunities for organizations to make use of their data on the z Systems platform.

DB2 Analytics Accelerator continues to evolve to support new and innovative use cases. Version 5.1 enables faster, more sophisticated reporting and deep analytics application integration, delivering sophisticated analytics on the z Systems platform. It supports the full lifecycle of a real-time analytics solution on a single, integrated system that combines transactional data, historical data, and predictive analytics. Ultimately, this drives insight based on real-time data.

Version 5.1 of DB2 Analytics Accelerator delivers a new dimension of analytical processing by introducing in-database analytics, in-database transformation, and accelerator-only tables.

In-database analytics capabilities enable acceleration of predictive analytics applications. This helps enable SPSS/Netezza Analytics data mining and in-database modeling to be processed within the Accelerator.

In-database transformation supports the consolidation of ETL/ELT processing in DB2 for z/OS to enable a more cost-effective, simplified architecture.

Accelerator-only tables can benefit statistics and analytics tools that use temporary data for reports. The high velocity of execution enables these tools to quickly gather all required data.

Accelerator-only tables can also be used to accelerate data transformations, which are implemented via SQL statements. To take full advantage of the product's high-speed capabilities, you can now store all interim results in accelerator-only tables. This enables subsequent queries or data transformations to process all relevant data on the accelerator, and to implement high-speed in-database transformations.

The introduction of accelerator-only tables extends the value of DB2 Analytics Accelerator to the following additional usage scenarios:

  • Deeper insight into operational status through faster reporting: Support for multistep reporting applications, DB2 Query Management Facility™ (QMF™), and homegrown applications. Minimizes latency and reduces complexity while enabling better business agility.
  • Accelerated campaign tuning for IBM Campaign (Unica®): Improved performance for iterative campaign tuning. Enables a significant reduction in campaign processing time frames and improves time to market.
  • Simplified data-transformation processes: Delivering in-database transformation within DB2 Analytics Accelerator. Helps reduce complex layers of transformation technology to lower cost, minimizes latency, and delivers swift business insight.
  • In-database analytics to accelerate predictive analytics: Improves the quality of models, speeds calculations, and delivers real-time, actionable business processes.
  • Simpler data integration: DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS, loading non-DB2 for z/OS data. Assimilates more data sources for analytics to shorten development cycles and speeds integration efforts, providing information when it is needed.
  • Deeper insight into customers and markets: Data scientist work area is an environment to efficiently, continuously test and improve analytics results to achieve better customer understanding.
  • Data mart consolidation through flexible data infrastructure: Host data marts on z Systems, where the data originates. Decisions are made on trusted, accurate data for improved business performance.

In addition, DB2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS, V5.1 offers the following new functions:

  • Load and continuous operation improvements within the incremental update better support enterprise clients.
  • Augmented security and improved performance with new PureData® technology extend advanced security with encryption of data at rest and of data in motion while taking advantage of the legendary built-in security of System z®.
  • Enhanced systems management capabilities enable faster data synchronization and data load (incremental update) as well as improved serviceability with automatic call home capability.

Description
Bottom rule

DB2 Analytics Accelerator complements DB2 for z/OS, which is built for transactional workloads. The Accelerator delivers a cost-effective, high-speed query engine to run business-critical reporting and complex business analytics workloads. As part of its unique design, the DB2 Analytics Accelerator includes breakthrough technologies to reroute complex, data-intensive queries to the integrated IBM PureData System for Analytics appliance. Thereby, DB2 Analytics Accelerator turns DB2 for z/OS into a universal database management system, capable of handling both transactional and analytical workloads. DB2 Analytics Accelerator, together with DB2 for z/OS, forms a new, self-managing, and hybrid workload-optimized database management system that runs each query workload in the most efficient way, so that each query is executed in the most optimal environment for maximum speed, execution, and cost efficiency.

DB2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS delivers improved data insights to an organization, providing the following benefits:

Speed

  • Dramatically improves query response (up to 2000 times faster) to support time-sensitive decisions.
  • Eliminates movement of data off the z Systems platform to deliver timely information from fresh, trusted, and accurate data.

Savings

  • Minimizes data proliferation, thus reducing storage, security, and systems management costs.
  • Reduces z Systems resource usage, freeing computing capacity for additional processing.
  • Improves access to and lowers the cost of storing, managing, and processing historical data.

Simplicity

  • Exploits renowned mainframe capabilities for business analytics applications with a nondisruptive installation and an easy migration of days (not weeks or months).
  • Simplifies infrastructure, eliminates data marts, and reduces ETL and data movement off the z Systems platform to accommodate all departmental requirements on a single, centralized infrastructure.

Security

  • Extends DB2 for z/OS qualities of service and security to analytic workload.
  • Keeps data on platform to ensure that your most critical asset (corporate data) is protected, secured, and governed.

DB2 Analytics Accelerator is a purpose-built, workload-optimized software appliance designed as an extension to the secure DB2 for z/OS environment. Acceleration occurs transparently to applications that submit queries to DB2 for z/OS without incurring z Systems usage charges. The DB2 for z/OS optimizer determines whether a query will run more efficiently in native DB2 or within the Accelerator and will direct the query accordingly.

DB2 Analytics Accelerator exploits two of the major trends in data warehousing and business analytics technology: massively parallel processing and efficient data filtering by early SQL projections and restrictions through Field Programmable Gate Arrays.

DB2 Analytics Accelerator helps you support your ever-changing analytic requirements, giving you the insight you need to maximize business performance. Clients using DB2 Analytics Accelerator can realize significant value within the following use cases:

  • Rapidly accelerating business-critical queries to deliver cost savings and improved performance.
  • Simplifying complex infrastructures and minimizing ETL to deliver timely information based on trusted, accurate data while lowering overall TCO.
  • Deriving insight from z/OS transaction systems within one integrated, hybrid environment that is optimized to run mixed-workload concurrently, efficiently, and cost-effectively.
  • Improving access to historical data and lowering storage costs to enable high-speed analysis of online and historical data while driving cost reduction.

These use cases deliver real business value by better fraud detection and prevention, improved cross-sell and up-sell capabilities, increased customer acquisition, reduced customer churn, and more.

DB2 Analytics Accelerator continues to evolve to support new and innovative use cases such as in-database transformation and advanced predictive analytics. These enhancements enable faster and more sophisticated reporting and allow for deep analytics application integration.

This hybrid approach brings analytics closer to the transactional source data, providing the following advantages:

  • Minimizing the need to move data across platforms
  • Reducing data latency, cost, and complexity
  • Improving data governance and reducing risk

Therefore, business users across the enterprise have access to more timely, accurate, and near real-time insight for improved decision making.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip (socket). A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The PVU table can be found at

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html
Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage® Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (refer to the web page below). If using full capacity licensing, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores1 in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using virtualization capacity licensing, licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at
http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/Counting_Software_licenses_using_sp ecific_virtualization_technologies.html

1
An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.

Notes:

  • Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies. Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies. Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
