IBM Workload Scheduler for z/OS offers the backbone infrastructure to automate the execution of batch and near real-time workloads and activities running in support of business services, and helps provide the reliable and Service Level Agreement (SLA)-compliant delivery of those business services. When used in combination with IBM Workload Scheduler (distributed), it extends the automation into distributed systems, and manages workflows that integrate mainframe application with distributed application, Enterprise Resource Planning, and business intelligence applications. Besides the traditional ISPF panels, Workload Scheduler for z/OS provides a modern web-based interface, called IBM Dynamic Workload Console, for operations, administrative tasks, and reporting, and offers self-service catalog and dashboards on mobile, for business users to be able to manage automatic tasks and perform health checks in a natural language.

Workload Scheduler for z/OS, V9.3 capabilities

Predictive capabilities that empower schedulers' control include:

  • Accurate prediction of job durations: Workload Scheduler for z/OS, V9.3 enhances the modeling of your plans with the possibility to define different estimated durations for the same job, depending on the job schedule. This enhancement, combined with the existing algorithm that adjusts the estimated durations on the basis of the real job runs, allows the product to automatically provide you with accurate forecasts of job durations. Additionally, Dynamic Workload Console reports are provided that show the average estimation error and the standard deviation of a job's duration, with the possibility to drill down. They help you further refine your job durations for close to perfect forecasts.
  • What-if analysis: Workload Scheduler for z/OS, V9.3 provides new Dynamic Workload Console panels, where you can simulate changes to the current plan and immediately see the impact. You may want to see what the impact on your plan is when a job starts late or runs longer, a new job is added, jobs or job streams dependencies are added or deleted, and a workstation is unavailable for a timeframe. Impact views are provided in the form of GANTT charts. What-if predictive simulation helps you to make informative decisions before taking actions that impact your plans or anticipate changes that can occur in your plan as a consequence of unplanned events.

Standard management of applications and objects that speed application developers' work is added:

  • Workload Scheduler for z/OS, V9.3 allows you to define, launch, and monitor, through the Dynamic Workload Console, new types of jobs to perform operations on external applications. The following new job types are available:
    • IBM Sterling Connect:Direct, to transfer one or more files from a primary node to a secondary node
    • IBM Netezza Performance Server, to load data from an input text file to a Netezza Performance Server database by using Netezza Performance Server utility
    • IBM WebSphere MQ, to issue request, response, publish on queues or topics
    • RESTful Web Services, to schedule HTTP requests (PUT, POST, GET, HEAD) and manipulate web resources
    • SalesForce applications
    • Oracle E-Business Suite jobs
    • Oracle PeopleSoft jobs
    • SAP BusinessObjects business intelligence reports (Crystal and Webi reports)
    • FTP job type enhanced with wildcards, for multiple file transfers, certificate authentication, file permissions, and the option to automatically delete the source file after transfer

Advanced automation features that simplify schedulers and system administrators tasks include:

  • Workload Automation Programming Language: Formerly known as Scheduling Operating Environment, this tool unifies and simplifies the native programmatic interfaces. With Workload Scheduler for z/OS, V9.3, it is delivered and supported as part of the product.
  • Automatic upgrade of Workload Scheduler for z/OS: A new workflow is available to automate the upgrade of Workload Scheduler for z/OS. All the manual actions involved in the upgrade, for example, the selection of features to be deployed, are completed up front, and then the workflow can be launched to speed up the upgrade process.
  • Dynamic Workload Console customizable dashboards: With Workload Scheduler for z/OS, V9.3, you can customize your console with personalized monitoring dashboards. With simple drag and drop of widgets, you can combine multiple monitoring views and have an at-a-glance view of all the scheduling information relevant for your job.
  • Hot standby controller on a remote system: You can set a hot standby controller on a remote site connected to the primary site through TCP/IP. It keeps the data and plans synchronized with the data and plans of the primary controller, through events exchange, and can take over the primary controller functionality in a minimum amount of time. Step awareness is also provided, to show which job steps were executed prior to the failure.
  • Business impact of scheduling object changes through IBM Business Service Manager integration: With Workload Scheduler for z/OS, V9.3, you can import scheduling objects such as workstations, applications, and jobs, to IBM Business Manager and send events related to these objects. Business Manager then provides you with a business impact analysis view for those events.

Customized Offerings

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage® Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.


IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

The following agreement applies for Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures:

  • IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011)

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect. IBM z Systems™ Operational Support Services - SoftwareXcel is an option if you desire added services.

Limited warranty applies


Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at
IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program support

Enhanced support, called Subscription and Support, includes telephone assistance, as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect. You will be notified of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice.

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Software Subscription and Support applies

Yes. During the S&S period, for the unmodified portion of a Program, and to the extent problems can be recreated in the specified operating environment, IBM will provide the following:

  • Defect correction information, a restriction, or a bypass.
  • Program updates: Periodic releases of collections of code corrections, fixes, functional enhancements and new versions and releases to the program and documentation.
  • Technical assistance: A reasonable amount of remote assistance via telephone or electronically to address suspected program defects. Technical assistance is available from the IBM support center in the customer's geography.

Additional details regarding Technical Assistance, that includes IBM contact information, are provided in the IBM Software Support at

S&S does not include assistance for:

  • The design and development of applications
  • Customer's use of programs in other than their specified operating environment
  • or
  • Failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

S&S is provided only if the program is within its support timeframe as specified in the Software Support Lifecycle policy for the program.

For operating system software, the revised IBM Operational Support Services - SoftwareXcel offering will provide support for those operating systems and associated products that are not available with the Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) offering.
