MobileFirst Platform Cloudant Data Layer Local Edition V1.0

The platform data layer, powered by Cloudant Local, delivers a scalable, fault tolerant, enterprise JavaScript™ Object Notation (JSON) and geographical JavaScript Object Notation (GeoJSON) database with easy-to-use administration and management capabilities, rich developer support, and powerful mobile and web capabilities. It is designed with applications in mind that require the availability, elasticity, and reach of possibly massive amounts of mobile, Internet of Things or device, and cloud customers.

MobileFirst Platform Cloudant Local targets deployment for production environments. It is best suited for apps that require an operational data store to handle a massively concurrent mix of low-latency reads and writes. Its data replication and synchronization technology enables continuous data availability, as well as offline app usage for mobile or remote users. As a JSON document store, Cloudant Local is ideal for managing multi-structured or unstructured data. Additionally, advanced indexing makes it easy to enrich applications with location-based, geospatial services, full-text search, and real-time analytics.

MobileFirst Platform Cloudant Local provides organizations with:

  • Scalable, fault tolerant JSON data store handles peak usage
  • Continuous data availability and durability to help keep applications up and running
  • Faster development of mobile apps and ubiquitous access to data with easy-to-use HTTP APIs and query language
  • Advanced indexing and querying capabilities to provide greater flexibility and access to data

Note: With this release, MobileFirst Platform Foundation V7.0 includes a limited-use entitlement to MobileFirst Platform Cloudant Local V1.0. at no additional charge. This limited-use entitlement enables MobileFirst Platform Foundation customers to use Cloudant Local as the basis for NoSQL based data storage for mobile apps. Separate entitlement to MobileFirst Cloudant Local, available for an additional charge, can augment this limited-use entitlement to leverage the core attributes of Cloudant Local such as elastic scalability, high availability, fault tolerance and master-master replication. Please refer to the MobileFirst Platform Foundation V7.0 license information documents referenced later in this announcement for more details on the limited-use entitlement.

The enhancements in MobileFirst Platform Foundation, previously known as Worklight® Platform Foundation, V7.0, augment the already rich contents of Version 6.3 and include the following capabilities:

  • Includes an iOS and Android SDK for use with a single-node Cloudant database for on-premise use. This new feature makes it easier for you to build mobile apps that continue working when offline. To scale larger when on-premise, additional database nodes are available, at an additional charge, with secure integration between new and existing back-end services.
  • Enhances access to backend services by extending the identification of tampered or hacked applications
  • Provides obfuscation of web code in hybrid apps and use of ProGuard for Android apps to help reduce the risk of attack by reverse engineering of apps.
  • Leverages MobileFirst Platform security and operational analytics capabilities when directly calling RESTful enterprise services, helping to provide consistent security and operational analytics across the entire mobile stack.
  • Extends the discovery and access patterns to backend services with support for RESTful services
  • Enables direct integration with SAP resources through Java™ Connector without the need for Netweaver gateway applications.
  • Supports new versions of mobile OS, and extend the support of push notification channels to include Microsoft Windows Notification Services for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 RT.
  • Modernizes the Operations Console function. This makes it easier to manage and operate the enterprise mobile channel
  • Simplifies deployment MobileFirst Platform applications in a scalable way by using farms of servers.
  • Collects logs and creates reports to gain insights specifically targeted to organizational needs without leaving the analytics console.
  • Uses updated technology to deploy applications to private clouds (Pure Application Services and SoftLayer®), now using Pattern V2.
  • MobileFirst Platform Foundation V6.3, and V7.0 and IBM Worklight V6.0,6.1,and V6.2 include iOS app development with 64-bit support.

MobileFirst Platform Cloudant Data Layer Local Edition provides a NoSQL, JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) data layer that enables developers of the MobileFirst platform's fast-growing web and mobile applications to focus on developing their applications without the need to manage database infrastructure or growth. The data layer delivers the availability, elasticity, and reach required by web and mobile applications and offers:

  • Data flexibility through a JSON document store that allows users to change schemas on the fly and ingest data from many sources and in many forms
  • Powerful indexing and search to increase application flexibility
  • Read/Write scalability to support large numbers of concurrent users and locations
  • Multi-data center replication to help reduce latency and deliver business continuity
  • Enhanced support specifically to address geospatial data requirements
  • Integration with the open source Cloudant Sync package to support synchronization of mobile and remote devices for always on access
  • Utilities and dashboard to simplify management tasks

IBM continues to enhance the MobileFirst Platform with new functional modules.

As part of this expansion, IBM intends to offer intelligent location awareness capabilities through Presence Insights™, formerly known as Presence Zones. Presence Insights would abstract data feeds from a multitude of location detecting technologies, apply real-time analytics to surface trends and anomalies, and enable real-time contextual mobile interaction for increased in-app engagement.

The change of Presence Zones to MobileFirst Platform Presence Insights would not affect entitlement; customers with existing entitlement to Presence Zones would have the same entitlement to the Presence Insights.

Planning information

MobileFirst Platform Cloudant Data Layer Local Edition V1.0

For production use, a minimum of 4 systems (nodes) are needed to create a fully functional cluster:

  • A minimum of three separate systems are needed to run the Cloudant Data Layer for replication purposes. Additional systems can be used to meet business needs. Customers must acquire sufficient program entitlements to properly license the software for these systems.
  • One system is needed to run a primary load balancer and Cloudant Dashboard.

It is recommended that all nodes configured in a cluster run the same operating system.


Note: As previously described in the Overview, MobileFirst Platform Foundation V7.0 includes limited-use entitlement to MobileFirst Platform Cloudant Local. In addition, you may use the MobileFirst Platform Cloudant Local component for the primary load balancer system at no additional charge; such use does not count toward the cluster configuration for entitlement purposes. Additional systems required to run the Cloudant Data Layer for replication purposes, are available for an additional charge.

Application metric definition

Application is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An application is a uniquely named software program that is separately installable on a computing device. Licensee must obtain sufficient application entitlements to cover all applications that incorporate any portion of, connect to, or are managed by the program.

Client Device metric definition

Client Device is a unit of measure by which the IBM SaaS can be obtained. A Client Device is a single user computing device or special purpose sensor or telemetry device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from or provides data to another computer system that is typically referred to as a server or is otherwise managed by the server. Multiple Client Devices may share access to a common server. A Client Device may have some processing capability or be programmable to allow a user to do work. Customer must obtain entitlements for every Client Device which runs, provides data to, uses services provided by, or otherwise accesses the IBM SaaS during the measurement period specified in customer's Proof of Entitlement (PoE) or Transaction Document.

Virtual Server metric definition

Virtual Server is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A server is a physical computer that is comprised of processing units, memory, and input/output capabilities and that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications for one or more users or client devices. Where racks, blade enclosures, or other similar equipment is being employed, each separable physical device (for example, a blade or a rack-mounted device) that has the required components is considered itself a separate server. A virtual server is either a virtual computer created by partitioning the resources available to a physical server or an unpartitioned physical server. Licensee must obtain virtual server entitlements for each virtual server made available to the program, regardless of the number of processor cores in the virtual server or the number of copies of the program on the virtual server.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

MobileFirst Platform Foundation V7.0

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Technical support of a program product version or release will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) also provides you with access to updates (modifications or fixes), releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Prohibited components

Not withstanding any provision in the License Agreement, licensee is not authorized to use any of the Additional Brand Deployment entitlements in the following situations:

  • Use of the program with an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) project structure different than that of the application covered by an application entitlement of the named program.
  • Use of the program in which greater than 10% of the source code is different from that of the application covered by an application entitlement to the named program.

More accurate reporting: Because system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support center in conjunction with the service request, you are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors.
