Description
Bottom rule

IBM Tools Base for z/OS , V1.4 (5655-V93) is part of the Information Management Tools portfolio, providing common infrastructure used by various IBM DB2 and IMS Tools products. Tools Base for z/OS offers technologies and services that assist DB2 and IMS tools in delivering key strategic architectures. Tools Base for z/OS consists of:

  • Autonomics
    • The Autonomics Director component offers much needed automation in the area of ongoing IMS database monitoring and maintenance. Sensor-enabled IMS tools capture the state of specific database conditions and store this data in a centralized repository. The Autonomics Director component uses the Policy Services component to evaluate this data and to make recommendations, such as indicating when performing database reorganization might be desirable.
    • The IMS Tools Knowledge Base ( IMS Tools KB) component provides common services for storing and viewing resources, such as reports, sensor data, policies, rules, notification lists, database state (sensor) data, exceptions, recommendations, and evaluation schedules, that are generated or used by certain IBM tools.
    • The Policy Services component is a core IMS Tools technology that supports certain IBM tools in providing conditional autonomic database health management functionality that may execute based on a specific IMS system status.
  • Modernization
    • The Administration Console component presents data through its web interface to help users gain additional or extended insight into the health and availability of IMS databases.
    • An Eclipse-based GUI for improved usability allows the separately licensed IBM IMS Batch Terminal Simulator for z/OS , V4.1 (5655-BT4) to be used with IBM Rational® Developer for z/OS and IBM Debug Tools for z/OS for simplified and seamless development, test, and debugging of applications. The front end GUI can operate stand-alone or as a plug-in to the Rational development platform.
    • The IMS Batch Terminal Simulator Resource Adapter component allows you to use a separately licensed IMS Batch Terminal Simulator for z/OS to test Java™ 2 Connector (J2C) applications that drive IMS Transactions from the Websphere Application Server environment.
  • Common services
    • The Connection Server component consolidates function access from certain IBM tools and allows you to access this function from distributed platforms.
    • A Distributed Access Infrastructure enables authorized access to configured IMS tools from authenticated TCP/IP clients.
    • The IMS Tools Generic Exits component offers a set of specialized utilities that can be used by separately licensed IBM IMS tools to manage various interfaces, including the managing of IMS exits and commands.
    • The IMS Tools Online System Interface component is a command interface that allows separately licensed IBM IMS tools to interface with all supported versions of IMS .
  • Supplementary tools
    • The IBM Tools Customizer for z/OS is a component of Tools Base that can be leveraged by various IBM DB2 Tools that have been enabled to allow the Tools Customizer to assist in post-installation customization by providing a process that allows you to customize and recustomize such IBM DB2 Tools and their maintenance.
    • The IMS Hardware Data (HD) Compression Extended component offers functions for compressing IMS data by using the z/OS hardware data compression (HDC) that is available on IBM processors. It allows you to create, monitor, and manage compressed databases, and to evaluate compression impact through an ISPF user interface.

Tools Base for z/OS , V1.4 includes upgrades to existing components and adds new support to enable a higher level of autonomics. The following enhancements are offered:

  • Autonomics Director component
    • Active autonomics for the separately licensed IBM IMS Database Solution Pack for z/OS , V1.2 (5655-S77)
    • User-defined groups
    • Ability to manage and coordinate reorganization of multiple IMS database groups as if reorganizing a single database
    • Changed the repository content for extendibility and consistency with other IMS Tools KB component repositories
  • Policy Services component
    • Extended notification services
  • Administration Console component
    • Single logon support for bringing together resources from various environments across the enterprise
    • Support for running on z/OS the Administration Console Server component
    • Ability to view and update peak autonomics scheduling windows
    • Ability to manage the Autonomics Director Monitor List and initiate sensor collection and policy evaluation on demand

Autonomics Director

By using the Autonomics Director component of the Tools Base for z/OS , V1.4 program, IBM IMS Database Solution Pack for z/OS , V1.2 (5655-S77) and IBM IMS Fast Path Solution Pack for z/OS , V1.2 (5655-W14) (both separately licensed) can implement automation of tools execution, using detailed understanding of the current state of the IMS databases.

The Autonomics Director component offers valuable automation in the area of ongoing IMS database monitoring and maintenance.

What is new:

  • Active autonomics for IMS Database Solution Pack for z/OS , V1.2: The active autonomics functionality builds on passive autonomics, but takes a recommended action to the next step by allowing you to have it automatically act on the recommended action. For example, the Autonomics Director component can not only recommend reorganization, but allows you to have it optionally initiate the reorganization job stream and tracks it through to completion.
  • User-defined groups: The Autonomics Director component now contains a generic user grouping facility. This facility is used by the Autonomics Director component and tools included in IMS Database Solution Pack for z/OS , V1.2 and IMS Fast Path Solution Pack for z/OS , V1.2 to allow you to group databases and attributes for activities related to the entire group. This facility is the basis for the group managed reorganization mentioned below. The Autonomics Director component's user interface allows the creation of groups from a list of database resources defined in the your DBDLIB or DBRC groups. Autonomics Director grouping provides you with the flexibility to include a given database in one or more groups while DBRC grouping does not.
  • The IMS Database Group Managed Reorganization functionality helps you define a database group to be reorganized as a single unit. This is especially advantageous when the group contains databases with external logical relationships. It also extends the power of grouping using the Autonomics Director component's functionality beyond definitional convenience and into the operational environment. The ability to initiate and control reorganization by group adds convenience and parallelism to the reorganization process. This can aid you by helping to reduce the amount of time and manual intervention required to maintain and optimize the databases.
  • A batch client interface allows for closer integration with your external job schedulers for simplified operations.
  • The notification services functionality is also broadened to include other system notification types such as REORG/PREGMR/POSTREORG/POSTGMR.

IMS Tools Knowledge Base

  • The IMS Tools KB component is enhanced to support the Rename RECON function.

Policy Services

  • The Policy Services component is enhanced to support the Autonomics Director component by extending its user notification services, which are used to notify you of successful completion or failure of Autonomics Director's scheduled processes.

Administration Console

The Administration Console component provides a single consolidated web interface through which a DBA can gather information to provide added insight into the health and availability of IMS databases. The Administration Console component is capable of communicating with various IBM IMS tools running throughout the enterprise in order to bring together distributed information into a dashboard style interface that assists both experienced and new IMS DBAs in investigating, troubleshooting, and predicting future database health.

Together with the extensions provided by IMS Database Solution Pack for z/OS , V1.2 and IMS Fast Path Solution Pack for z/OS , V1.2, the Administration Console component offers:

  • A comprehensive dashboard, providing information specific to the selected database or database group
  • Simplified web access so that reports can be stored within the IMS Tools KB component; such as, for example, reports generated by the tools within the IMS Database Solution Pack for z/OS or the IMS Fast Path Solution Pack for z/OS
  • Ability to provide graphical visualization and charting of database sensor data gathered by any of the tools in the IMS Database Solution Pack for z/OS or the IMS Fast Path Solution Pack for z/OS
  • Listings of exceptions generated by the evaluation of policies and their corresponding recommendations offered by the Autonomics Director component
  • The ability to easily examine database free space, database fragmentation, and index optimization, and to show trends in database growth, rate of fragmentation, and more

Additionally, new functionality enables you to do the following:

  • View databases from across the enterprise from a single logged in session.
  • Run the server of the Administration Console component on z/OS , allowing for easier deployment and maintenance in your environments.
  • View and update peak scheduling windows for specifying when sensor data collection and policy evaluation can take place.
  • Update the monitor list of the Autonomics Director component by specifying which databases should be actively monitored.
  • Initiate® sensor collection and policy evaluation on demand.
  • Obtain comprehensive guidance for setting up, configuring, and performing key database administration tasks through the embedded user assistance.

Sub-capacity terms and conditions

For each System z IPLA program with Value Unit pricing, the quantity of that program needed to satisfy applicable IBM terms and conditions is referred to as the required license capacity. Your required license capacity is based upon the following factors:

  • The System z IPLA program you select
  • The applicable Value Unit Exhibit
  • The applicable terms
  • Whether your current mainframes are full capacity or sub-capacity

For more information on the Value Unit Exhibit for the System z IPLA program you selected, refer to the Ordering information section.

                                 based
Full capacity mainframes

In cases where full capacity is applicable, the following terms apply.

Execution based, z/OS based, full machine based: The required capacity of a System z IPLA program with these terms equals the MSU-rated capacity of the machines where the System z IPLA program executes.

For more information on mainframe MSU-rated capacities, visit

http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/library/swpriceinfo/

Reference based: The required license capacity of a System z IPLA program with these terms equals the license capacity of the applicable monthly license charge (MLC) program. This MLC program is called the parent program.

Sub-capacity mainframes

In cases where sub-capacity is applicable, the following terms apply.

Execution based: The required capacity of a System z IPLA sub-capacity program with these terms equals the capacity of the LPARs where the System z IPLA program executes.

z/OS based: The required license capacity of a System z IPLA program with these terms equals the license capacity of z/OS on the machines where the System z IPLA program executes.

Reference based: The required license capacity of a System z IPLA program with these terms equals the license capacity of the applicable monthly license charge (MLC) program. This MLC program is called the parent program.

Full-machine-based: The required license capacity of a System z IPLA program with full-machine-based terms equals the MSU-rated capacity of the machines where the System z IPLA program executes.

For more information on mainframe MSU-rated capacities, refer to The System/370, System/390® , and System z Machine Exhibit (Z125-3901), or visit the Mainframes section of the System z Exhibits Web site

http://ibm.com/zseries/library/swpriceinfo/

For more information on sub-capacity System z IPLA terms and conditions, refer to Software Announcement 204-184, dated August 10, 2004

For additional information for products with reference-based terms, System z IPLA sub-capacity programs with reference-based terms add value to the parent program across the environment, regardless of where in the environment the System z IPLA program executes. An environment is defined as either a single or stand-alone machine or a qualified Parallel Sysplex® . You might have one or more different environments across the enterprise. To determine the required license capacity for each System z IPLA program with referenced-based terms, each environment should be assessed separately. When a System z IPLA sub-capacity program with reference-based terms is used in a qualified Parallel Sysplex environment, the required license capacity of the System z IPLA program must equal the license capacity of the parent program across the Parallel Sysplex . Qualified Parallel Sysplex refers to one:

  1. That meets the criteria defined in Hardware Announcement 198-001, dated January 13, 1998
  2. Where MLC pricing is aggregated across the Sysplex
Sub-capacity eligibility

To be eligible for sub-capacity charging on select System z IPLA programs, you must first implement and comply with all terms of either sub-capacity Workload License Charges (WLC) or sub-capacity Entry Workload License Charges (EWLC). To implement sub-capacity WLC or EWLC, a machine must be System z (or equivalent). On that machine:

  • All instances of the OS/390® operating system must be migrated to the z/OS operating systems
  • Any licenses for the OS/390 operating system must be discontinued
  • All instances of the z/OS operating systems must be running in z/Architecture® (64-bit) mode

For that machine, you must create and submit a Sub-capacity Report to IBM each month. Sub-capacity Reports must be generated using the Sub-capacity Reporting Tool (SCRT). For additional information or to obtain a copy of SCRT, visit the System z Software Pricing Web site

http://ibm.com/zseries/swprice

You must comply with all of the terms of the WLC or EWLC offering, whichever is applicable:

  • The complete terms and conditions of sub-capacity WLC are defined in the IBM Customer Agreement - Attachment for System z Workload License Charges (Z125-6516).
  • The complete terms and conditions for sub-capacity EWLC are defined in the IBM Customer Agreement - Attachment for IBM eServer™ System z 890 and 800 License Charges (Z125-6587).

Additionally, you must sign and comply with the terms and conditions specified in the amendment to the IPLA contract - Amendment for IBM System z9® and eServer zSeries® Programs Sub-capacity Pricing (Z125-6929). Once the amendment is signed, the terms in the amendment replace any and all previous System z IPLA sub-capacity terms and conditions.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered destroyed or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
