Description |
In addition to function delivered at IBM z/VSE V5.1 general availability, z/VSE V5.1 enhancements offer:
- Support for IBM CICS Explorer - "the new face of CICS Transaction
Server for VSE/ESA"
CICS Explorer V1.1 capabilities can be used with CICS TS. This function fulfills the statement of direction in Software Announcement 211-118, dated April 12, 2011.
CICS Explorer is the new systems management framework for CICS TS. It provides an intuitive, easy-to-use way of providing read-only capabilities against CICS. CICS Explorer allows an integrated access to a wide range of data delivered by CICS TS and enables users to create task-oriented views. CICS Explorer consists of a CICS Explorer client and a CICS TS extension. Refer to download information available on the z/VSE home page
The CICS TS extension will be delivered as a CICS TS PTF. CICS Explorer V1.1 is designed to operate with CICS TS and other IBM products. When used with CICS TS, it requires z/VSE V5.1, or later.
- The Fast Path to Linux on System z function (Linux Fast
Path) in an LPAR environment
This function fulfills the statement of direction in Software Announcement 211-466, dated October 12, 2011. Linux Fast Path was first introduced with z/VSE V4.3 for use in a z/VM guest environment. z/VSE V5.1 is designed to add LPAR support, which further extends the connectivity options for z/VSE clients using Linux on System z.
Linux Fast Path is a z/VSE function that allows selected TCP/IP applications to communicate with a TCP/IP stack on Linux on System z without requiring a TCP/IP stack on z/VSE.
The LFP function requires a Linux on System z distribution.
Linux Fast Path supports two environments:
- Linux Fast Path in an LPAR environment requires that both z/VSE and Linux on System z execute in an LPAR on the same zEnterprise server. Linux Fast Path in LPAR environment requires a HiperSockets connection and transparently exploits the HiperSockets Completion Queue function of the zEnterprise.
- Linux Fast Path in a z/VM guest environment requires that z/VSE and Linux on System z run as z/VM guests in the same z/VM system. It runs best in a z/VM mode LPAR, in which multiple types of System z processors can be defined. z/VSE can continue to use Central Processors (CPs) whereas Linux on System z can run on Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) processors. The z/VM mode LPAR requires IBM System z10®, or later and z/VM V5.4, or later.
- z/VSE z/VM IP
Assist (z/VSE VIA)
z/VSE V5.1 is designed to exploit the z/VSE VIA function that allows selected z/VSE TCP/IP applications in a z/VM guest environment to access an external network or an IEDN without requiring a TCP/IP stack on z/VSE. If you plan to use this function, check the z/VSE website for additional information.
- 64-bit input/output (I/O) processing for applications
64-bit virtual addressing for applications was introduced at general availability of z/VSE V5.1. This enables 64-bit applications to use virtual storage above the 2 GB address (the bar). Virtual storage above the bar is organized as private or shared memory objects that can be obtained using the IARV64 macro.
With 64-bit I/O processing, you have the flexibility to also use 64-bit virtual storage for I/O buffers and, therefore, benefit from increased processor storage available with the latest IBM System z servers.
64-bit I/O buffers can be allocated within private memory objects. The 64-bit I/O support is available for applications using the EXCP macro and disks of type ECKD.
This function will not be available at general availability. The function is planned to be delivered later via PTF.
- z/VSE database
connector
This z/VSE database connector is designed to allow z/VSE applications to access a relational database on any suitable database server. It gives you more flexibility in selecting a database server that runs on a platform other than z/VSE.
The z/VSE database connector is available through the z/VSE Database Call Level Interface, which provides an application programming interface (API) for z/VSE applications written in Assembler, COBOL, PL/1, C, or REXX. It supports batch as well as CICS applications.
z/VSE applications, adapted to the z/VSE Database Call Level Interface, can now:
- Access data stored in various relational databases
- Utilize advanced database functions
- Use SQL statements provided by modern database products
The z/VSE Database Call Level Interface can be used with any database product that offers a Java Data Base Connectivity (JDBC) driver that supports JDBC V3.0, or later.
Databases that can be used with Database Call Level Interface include IBM DB2®, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server.
The z/VSE Database Call Level Interface consist of two parts:
- The Database Call Level Interface client that runs under z/VSE.
- The Database Call Level Interface server that runs on a Java platform.
The Database Call Level Interface server can run on the same system as the database server (2-tier environment) or on a different one (3-tier environment).
Double Byte Character Support (DBCS) is supported, provided that the database server and the JDBC driver are enabled for DBCS.
- IPv6/VSE V1.1 enhancements:
- IPv6/VSE now supports Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for secure transmission of data to and from remote host systems. Protocols that are supported are HTTPS (HTTP over SSL), FTPS (FTP over SSL), SMTPS (SMTP over SSL), and TN3270E over SSL. IPv6/VSE provides an SSL proxy server. This SSL proxy server allows non-SSL server applications, running on z/VSE, to accept connections from SSL based client applications. It allows non-SSL client applications running on z/VSE to connect to SSL based remote server applications. The use of the proxy server is transparent to z/VSE applications.
- IPv6/VSE adds Layer 2 support for OSA Express® devices (CHPID type OSD or OSX) when used in an IPv4 link in addition to the support already available for IPv6 links.
These functions will not be available at general availability. The functions are planned to be delivered later via PTF.
- VSE/POWER enhancement to ease job output handling
Program driven output segmentation, using the IPWSEGM macro, has been extended to generate duplicates of LST and PUN output. The support is available through the operand DUP=YES of the * $$ LST/PUN statement. Duplicates can be helpful to distribute output to multiple destinations at the same time.
- Enhanced IBM System Storage options
IBM System Storage Tape Controller 3592 Model C07 is a new high-performance tape controller. It is supported by z/VSE V4.2, or later and can be used to attach 3592 Model E06 (TS1130) or 3592 Model E05 (TS1120) tape drives.
These enhancements will be made available with PTFs for z/VSE V5.1.
z/VSE V5.1 is generally available since November 25, 2011.
Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act
z/VSE V5.1 is capable when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it.

Product positioning |
The new enhancements for z/VSE V5.1 deliver on the statements of direction and provide new functionality following the well established strategy of "protect, integrate, and extend" - in short, "PIE".
CICS Explorer provides new systems management functionality to CICS TS. This freely available feature protects existing investments in CICS applications through systems management improvements.
The Fast Path to Linux on System z function (Linux Fast Path) is now available in an LPAR environment. It had been first introduced for z/VM guest environments with z/VSE V4.3. Selected TCP/IP applications can communicate with a TCP/IP stack on Linux on System z without requiring a TCP/IP stack on z/VSE. This may result in improved throughput and reduced resource consumption in z/VSE.
Another example of the "integrate" in the strategy is the z/VSE database connector, which adds more flexibility in connecting to a database server outside of z/VSE, including IBM DB2, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server.
With the availability of the zEnterprise BladeCenter® Extension (zBX), the integrated connectivity options now include AIX®, Linux, and Microsoft Windows, in addition to Linux on System z. This, together with the z/VSE connectors, provides a rich set of hybrid computing options for z/VSE users.

Compatibility
Compatibility aspects include:
- z/VSE V5 operates in z/Architecture® mode only.
- z/VSE V5.1 will be shipped only with a single supervisor, $$A$SUPI. Starting with z/VSE V4.1, supervisor generation has been dropped.
- The support for up to 512 VSE tasks has to be enabled explicitly. A compatibility mode is provided for applications that rely on the old 255 task limit.
- From z/VSE V4.1 onwards, the Label Area must reside on a virtual disk.
- If initial installation is performed, the ACF/VTAM 31-bit I/O buffer support is enabled. It might be necessary to increase the number of copy blocks.
- Starting with z/VSE V4.3, CICS/VSE V2.3 is no longer part of the z/VSE package and the CICS coexistence environment has been removed.
- Starting with z/VSE V4.3, DL/I V1.12 is the only DL/I release that can be used with z/VSE. It replaces DL/I VSE V1.11 and DL/I DOS/VS V1.10.
- The Japanese national language version continues to be available.
The optional feature GPS (shipped with TCP/IP for VSE/ESA) does not support Double Byte Character Set (DBCS) printing.
- z/VSE V5.1 is not delivered on 3480 tape cartridges.
Limitations
Limitations when using the Fast Service Upgrade (FSU) process:
- FSU to z/VSE V5.1 is possible from z/VSE V4.2 and z/VSE V4.3. The FSU process supports two releases only.
- Users migrating from VSE/ESA V2.4, or later can either use FSU several times or do an initial installation.
- Users migrating from a release prior to VSE/ESA V2.4 must use initial installation.
- If ACF/VTAM 31-bit support is not enabled on your current system, you have to enable it explicitly after FSU to z/VSE V5.1. It might be necessary to increase the number of copy blocks.
- On a z/VSE V5.1 system, DL/I V1.11 or DL/I DOS/VS V1.10 can no longer be used. You have to install DL/I V1.12.
Performance considerations
The overall performance of z/VSE V5.1 depends on the individual hardware and software components and on the specific environment and setup parameters.
In general, the overall CPU requirement of z/VSE V5.1 is similar to that of z/VSE V4.3. This applies as long as the same environment is used (for example, Batch or CICS TS for VSE/ESA V1.1) without exploitation of new functions. Actual user experience may vary.

IBM Electronic Services |
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
