Description
Bottom rule

Designed for businesses that demand mixed workload applications and require ultimate in built-in, always-on high availability, FlashSystem 840 comes equipped with the latest interface technologies, a compact form factor, and terabytes of flash, all in a modular design to handle business growth.

Easy to deploy and manage, FlashSystem 840 can help deliver savings across the entire organization, from improved productivity of IT staff to energy efficiency within the data center. FlashSystem 840 is designed to be easily upgraded in the field, so IT personnel can expand capacity to support changing needs with minimal disruption to operations. By offloading heavy workloads to this flash storage system, organizations can extend the life of their existing storage assets and consolidate their legacy storage systems for all-flash macro efficiency. FlashSystem 840 can scale up to 48 TB in capacity in just 2U. When compared to traditional high-performance storage solutions, FlashSystem 840 provides power, cooling, and space savings within a small footprint.

FlashSystem 840 is designed to deliver the extreme reliability required by today's enterprise business critical applications. The system uses enterprise-class flash technology. Together, IBM Variable Stripe RAID and system-wide RAID-5 make up IBM two-dimensional Flash RAID. Variable Stripe RAID technology helps reduce downtime and maintain performance and capacity in the event of partial or full flash chip failures. System-wide RAID-5, with easily accessed hot swappable flash modules, helps prevent data loss and promote availability. Additionally, all active components are redundant and hot swappable with tool-less access from the front or back, enhancing two-dimensional RAID protection. Hot-swappable flash modules and redundant components can help boost data availability and IT productivity by enabling IT staff to spend more time working on strategic initiatives rather than resolving system failures. FlashSystem 840 supports AES-XTS 256 encryption for advanced data security for data at rest, as well as multiple RAID layers for superior protection.

FlashSystem 840 is designed with MicroLatency to help speed up application response times, so organizations can use real-time data to make faster strategic decisions. The low-latency design improves CPU efficiency. In addition, by reducing wait times and enabling more transactions to occur, FlashSystem 840 helps improve the user experience, enhance productivity, and scale concurrent users.

To help deliver performance with deep functionality, FlashSystem 840 integrates with SAN Volume Controller for centralized storage management, as well as IBM System Storage Easy Tier® technology for intelligent data placement. The flash system also features an intuitive GUI and tool-less hardware design, reducing installation and management time. FlashSystem 840 enables organizations to process vast amounts of data with high IOPS and bandwidth, helping to speed time to market for products and services.

Bottom rule

IBM FlashSystem 840 (9840-AE1) is designed to deliver high performance, efficiency, and reliability for shared enterprise storage environments, helping clients around the world address performance issues with their most critical applications and infrastructure. FlashSystem 840 may be used as data storage for important applications that need high performance and low latency. Such applications include databases supporting line of business applications, as well as virtualization platforms such as virtual servers and VDI.

FlashSystem 840 forms part of the IBM Flash portfolio, which also includes other shared flash storage systems, solid state devices provided in disk storage systems, and server-based flash devices.

FlashSystem 840 can either complement or replace traditional hard drive arrays in most applications. As standard shared primary data storage devices, FlashSystem 840 delivers performance beyond that of most traditional arrays, even those that incorporate SSDs or other flash technology. FlashSystem 840 can also be used as the top tier of storage alongside traditional arrays in tiered storage architectures, such as the IBM Easy Tier functionality available in IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller and Storwize® V7000 storage virtualization platforms.

FlashSystem 840 storage system can help deliver significant benefits to server-based infrastructures which depend on large quantities of locally attached flash devices, such PCIe flash cards or SAS/SATA SSDs. While locally attached flash devices typically work well for accelerating applications located on single servers, such devices can be more difficult to share across multiple servers, scale to large capacities, and centrally manage than FlashSystem 840. Additionally, FlashSystem 840 has sophisticated reliability features, such as IBM Variable Stripe RAID, that are not present on locally attached flash devices. Based on eMLC flash, FlashSystem 840 storage system is the appropriate choice for those with the following characteristics:

IBM recommends implementing a data replication strategy in high availability environments to maximize data availability beyond the protection available within individual FlashSystem 840.

Warranty service

If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the types of warranty service specified for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone, or electronically via an IBM website. Certain machines contain remote support capabilities for direct problem reporting, remote problem determination, and resolution with IBM. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Following problem determination, if IBM determines on-site service is required, scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call, machine technology and redundancy, and availability of parts. If applicable to your product, parts considered Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) will be provided as part of the machine's standard warranty service.

Service levels are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country-specific and location-specific information.

You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request IBM to install it, at no additional charge.

Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for next business day (NBD) delivery. IBM specifies, in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU, whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required, return instructions and a container are shipped with the replacement CRU. You may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 15 days of your receipt of the replacement.

On-site Service

At IBM's discretion, you will receive specified CRU service, or IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well lit, and suitable for the purpose.
