IBM z™ /VSE V6.1 and IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.1 have been generally available since November 27, 2015.

General Print Server (GPS) feature

With this announcement, the GPS feature will be available for IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.1. This is in addition to functionality that is already provided with the Application Pak feature of the product.

The GPS feature provides IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.1 users with the ability to transparently map VTAM® -based printing to LPR/LPD-based network printers.

For information on the content of z/VSE V6.1 and IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.1, refer to Software Announcement ZP15-0281, dated October 5, 2015.

Refer also to the z/VSE website.

z/VSE Network Appliance

The z/VSE Network Appliance has been available since June 30, 2016. The new z/VSE Network Appliance uses the z Appliance Container Infrastructure (zACI) which was introduced on z13™ and z13s servers. It provides network access for TCP/IP socket applications without requiring a TCP/IP stack on z/VSE. For z/VM® guests this feature is already available through the z/VSE - z/VM IP Assist (VIA®) function. The z/VSE Network Appliance adds support for z/VSE systems that run without z/VM in LPARs. Both the z/VSE Network Appliance and the VIA feature build on the z/VSE Linux™ Fast Path function.

Compared to a TCP/IP stack in z/VSE, the z/VSE Network Appliance may support higher TCP/IP traffic throughput and reduce the processing resources in z/VSE.

For more information see the z/VSE website and Hardware Announcement ZG16-0002, dated February 16, 2016.

Support for enhanced IBM System Storage® options

  • IBM TS7700 R4.0
    • IBM TS7700 R4.0 delivers faster performance and larger maximum capacity with the new TS7760 offering. TS7760 combines the capabilities of the former TS7720 and TS7740 into a single offering.
    • z/VSE V5.2, and later, support IBM TS7700 R4.0 and IBM TS7760.
    • For more information, refer to Hardware Announcement ZG16-0062, dated May 10, 2016.
  • IBM System Storage DS8880 (ECKD™ and FCP-attached SCSI disks)

General Print Server (GPS) feature

The General Print Server (GPS) feature will be available with IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.1. IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.1 is delivered with two features: the Application Pak feature and the GPS feature. Although the IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.1 product is automatically installed during installation of z/VSE V6.1, both features require a license to use them. To get the license for the GPS feature, the GPS feature must be ordered separately. The GPS feature requires that the Application Pak feature is also licensed.

The GPS feature provides IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.1 users with the ability to transparently map VTAM -based printing to LPR/LPD-based network printers.

z/VSE Network Appliance

The z/VSE Network Appliance has been available since June 30, 2016. It can be used with z/VSE V5.2, or later.

The z/VSE Network Appliance builds on the z/VSE Linux Fast Path (LFP) function. With the LFP function, selected TCP/IP socket applications can access a TCP/IP network without requiring a TCP/IP stack on z/VSE.

The z/VSE Network Appliance provides the network access for TCP/IP socket applications that run on z/VSE in an LPAR environment. It adds functionality that is already available in a z/VM guest environment through the z/VSE - z/VM IP Assist (VIA) function. VIA was introduced on z196 and z114 servers.

With both the z/VSE Network Appliance and the VIA function no Linux on z Systems™ need be installed.

The z/VSE Network Appliance is an integrated solution that is available as a downloadable package. It uses the z Appliance Container Infrastructure (zACI) which was introduced on 13 and z13s servers and can be deployed with the zACI installer.

Compared to a TCP/IP stack in z/VSE, the z/VSE Network Appliance may support higher TCP/IP traffic throughput and reduce the processing resources in z/VSE.

Enhanced IBM System Storage options

  • IBM TS7700 R4.0
    • IBM TS7700 R4.0 delivers faster performance and larger maximum capacity with the new TS7760 offering. TS7760 combines the capabilities of the former TS7720 and TS7740 into a single offering.
    • z/VSE V5.2, and later, support the IBM TS7700 both as a stand-alone system and in a multicluster grid environment. z/VSE supports the COPY EXPORT function.
  • IBM DS8880 (ECKD and FCP-attached SCSI disks)
    • The IBM DS8880 family includes the models DS8884, DS8886, and DS8888. The DS8884 model delivers a lower cost system and smaller scale solution.
    • z/VSE V5.2, and later, support the IBM DS8880 family.

Single Version Charging for IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE has been replaced by the Migration Price Option

IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2 is eligible for MPO.

The terms for IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.1, as previously announced in Software Announcement ZP16-0176, dated April 12, 2016 , licensed under the IBM Customer Agreement are unaffected by this announcement except as noted below:

As previously announced, the MPO period is not to exceed 18 months from the date of licensing of the new version. To add clarity, when the MPO period expires, if the older version is still in use (has not been discontinued), then each version will be billed separately at the MSU value reported on the Sub-Capacity report for that program version when sub-capacity charges apply, and when full capacity charges apply, each version will be charged at the MSU value at Full-Machine Capacity. Each version will continue to bill until IBM is notified to discontinue a program's license.

The following TCP/IP for z/VSE programs are eligible for MPO:

Replaced program number Program name Replacement program number Program name
5686-A04 TCP/IP for VSE/ESA V1 Application Pak 5686-CS1 IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2 Application Pak
5686-A04 TCP/IP for VSE/ESA V1 GPS 5686-CS1 IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2 GPS

To elect MPO, the customer must notify IBM and identify the prior program and replacement program and the designated machine the programs are operating on.

Note: The following two programs are not eligible for MPO as they have no replacement:

  • 5686-A04, TCP/IP for VSE/ESA V1 Base Pak

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a lawful, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

Electronic Service Agent™ and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to IBM Systems customers. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support, all at no additional cost to you.

Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX® V5.3, AIX V6.1, and AIX V7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type smitty esa_main, and select Configure Electronic Service Agent. In addition, ESA now includes a powerful web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. For more information and documentation on how to configure and use Electronic Service Agent, go to the IBM Electronic Support website.

The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled customers to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.

Benefits

Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent™ tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the symptoms, diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24x7 monitoring and reporting mean intervention is not required to report errors.

Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to securely transmit either through the internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem to provide customers a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into a customer's system.

For additional information, go to the http://www.ibm.com/support/esa website.

More accurate reporting: Because system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support Center in conjunction with the service request, you are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.

Customized support: Using the IBM ID entered during activation, you can view system and support information in the My Systems and Premium Search sections of the IBM Electronic Support page.

My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with your IBM ID. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase. Using Premium search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, you are able to see search results that apply specifically to your systems.
