Overview
Bottom rule

The DB2 on Cloud and dashDB Enterprise offerings provide you access to select DB2 on cloud and dashDB cloud services at a reduced cost if you already hold entitlements for DB2 Developer, DB2 Advanced Edition, and DB2 Workgroup Edition. These offerings give you the flexibility to operate in a hybrid on-premises infrastructure in the cloud world.

DB2 on Cloud

DB2 on Cloud provides database as a service on the IBM SoftLayer® global cloud infrastructure. It offers the rich features of an on-premises DB2 deployment without the cost, complexity, and risk of managing your own infrastructure. Based on DB2 software, it comes with a preconfigured instance that is optimized for online transaction processing applications.

While DB2 on Cloud is configured to support creating and managing databases for online transaction processing applications, it gives you the flexibility to create your own instances for analytic or mixed workloads. This offering reduces the time required for provisioning and deploying DB2 so that more resources can be devoted to developing new solutions and innovation.

Key features and benefits of DB2 on Cloud are:

  • Accelerates and simplifies deployment. Take advantage of DB2 without the need for an on-premises infrastructure.
  • Offers native encryption with all configurations. You're in control of your data, even when it's not in your building. Leverage the benefits of infrastructure as a service with the confidence of knowing your data is encrypted in flight, while in use, and at rest.
  • Optimizes performance and enhances security. Experience speed and reliability with a private virtual machine or dedicated bare metal server.
  • Offers four hardware configurations and two database editions to meet your business demands. Keep infrastructure costs in line with the changing needs of the business.
  • Provides SQL compatibility support for Oracle Database applications.

dashDB Enterprise

dashDB is the new IBM data warehousing and analytics service in the cloud. This new innovation leverages the advanced, IBM in-memory capabilities that are pioneered in IBM BLU Acceleration and advanced, in-database, predictive analytics capabilities, which are pioneered in IBM PureData® System for Analytics (Netezza).

The dashDB delivers a different option for your infrastructure provider. The dashDB service itself is no different than other dashDB Enterprise offerings. The level of management and feature functionality remains the same.

A fully managed service

dashDB keeps data warehousing infrastructure out of your way so you can focus on the business, not the business of data warehousing. A fully managed solution in the cloud, it allows end users to build more with rapid provisioning and no infrastructure investment. Built-in performance, no tuning, and embedding simplicity let your organization grow more, without the need to scale infrastructure and staff. Also, database analytic capabilities help your organization know more about your business and data.

Multiple deployment options

dashDB is available as a stand-alone offering and as a tightly integrated analytics service with Cloudant. It allows powerful, standard business intelligence (BI) utilities and predictive algorithms to be used with Cloudant JSON data stores.

Robust partner ecosystem

dashDB is compatible with advanced tooling like IBM Watson Analytics™, the R language, and IBM Data Works, and with a wide range of third-party BI and extract, transform, and load tools.

Ability to unlock your data and know more quickly

dashDB is designed to help you unlock the potential of your data by providing a solution that delivers on the promise of speed, simplicity, and agility, without sacrificing security and reliability.

They require clients to set aside entitled capacity of DB2 as their entitlement for the cloud services.

For a description of DB2 on Cloud, see Software Announcement ZP15-0396, dated June 23, 2015.

For information about dashDB, see Software Announcement ZP14-0553, dated December 16, 2014.

Product positioning
Bottom rule

According to IDC, cloud-based databases as a service (DBaaS) is a vital, affordable alternative to on-premises database deployment, especially for application workloads in the cloud. This makes sense for both small and large clients, according to Carl W. Olofson, in the October 2014, IDC #251648. Within the broader definition of DBaaS in the industry, there are a number of competing models for cloud database service delivery that enable infrastructure functionality as exposed or embedded capabilities.

These BYOL offerings for DB2 on Cloud and dashDB help clients move simply and easily to a hybrid on premises and cloud architecture in an expedient cost-effective manner.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a lawful, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
