Overview
Bottom rule

WebSphere Service Registry and Repository V8.5.5 delivers the following new features and benefits:

  • WebSphere Service Registry and Repository provides a simplified service registration, which allows developers or service registrars to easily register new or existing business services that will optionally load service definition documents. This feature, in combination with the capability for bulk loading of service information gives the user several options to input service information into WebSphere Service Registry and Repository quickly and seamlessly. One of the main functions of a centralized registry and repository, like WebSphere Service Registry and Repository, provides a capability where all service information is available to be found. Because most IT shops are under resource constraints, the capability to load service information easily means that there is increased value and decreased cost to doing so.
  • A simplified view of a service, such that all service information, is available through easy-to- use tabs on a single page. For the casual WebSphere Service Registry and Repository user who may be a business user or occasional IT user, this means that after finding a service through a catalog keyword search, it will be easy to navigate and find information about that service. That includes:
    • The identity of the service owner and their contact information
    • The operations a service version provides
    • Which applications are consuming this service
    • What services this service is consuming
    • The endpoints that are associated with the various environments
  • Application developers can browse the catalog to find a suitable service, then easily request to consume it by registering their application. Optionally, the application can provide service level requirements through a Service Level Agreement (SLA). One of the potentially significant benefits of a service is reuse to save time and money. After finding a service and using the simplified view of the service, users may register their intent to have their application consume this service, along with any SLA they desire to be in place.
  • A simplified service management profile is included that provides a simple, easy-to-use, governance lifecycle for service management. Based on industry best practices, a simpler profile for WebSphere Service Registry and Repository, as an alternative starting point to the governance enablement profile, provides simpler service governance lifecycle. The simplified lifecycle has many fewer states and is appropriate for those organizations that desire to implement a simplified governance process.
  • The capability for bulk loading of existing service information into WebSphere Service Registry and Repository from a spreadsheet is provided in Version 8.5.5. There may be many services for which it would be useful to track in a centralized metadata repository like WebSphere Service Registry and Repository, but which was not tracked due to the amount of time it takes to register these services. The bulk loading of existing service information from a spreadsheet makes that process simple and quick by allowing greater recognition and usage of all services in the enterprise.
  • Performance improvements in loading service technical information, such as Web Services Description Languages (WSDLs) and XML Schema Definitions (XSDs) into WebSphere Service Registry and Repository are included in V8.5.5. Because there are many industry-standard XSDs that are large, this performance improvement will particularly help with implementations that involve industry-standard XSDs.

WebSphere Service Registry and Repository for z/OS®, V8.5

The feature functionality is the same as for WebSphere Service Registry and Repository on any other platform. WebSphere Service Registry and Repository V8.5 runs under WebSphere Application Server V8.5, which is an application foundation that is optimized to take advantage of the unique qualities of service of IBM z Systems™ hardware and the z/OS operating system. WebSphere Application Server for z/OS offers functional equivalence to WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment, along with additional capabilities such as prioritized workload management, advanced transactional integrity, intense scalability, and data and workload collocation, made possible through tight integration with z Systems and z/OS.

Version 8.5 delivers the following function:

  • Includes both the Liberty profile, which includes optional extension to leverage z Systems capabilities, such as z/OS security, transactions, and workload management, and the full profile WebSphere Application Server.
  • Enables unlimited load balancing across servers.
  • Includes WebSphere eXtreme Scale for z/OS, which provides client APIs for connecting to distributed eXtreme Scale servers.
The new z/OS capabilities are available for download or through z/OS ServerPac maintenance. This offering is available for Internet delivery in countries where Shop zSeries Support Portal available. Internet delivery reduces software delivery time and allows you to install software without the need to handle tapes.

To deploy WebSphere Service Registry and Repository for z/OS, V8.5.5, use the Shopz site and search on PID 5655-WBS, then apply the WebSphere Service Registry and Repository V8.5.5 service PTFs.

For more details on Internet delivery, refer to the Shopz help information at

Description
Bottom rule

WebSphere Service Registry and Repository V8.5.5 focuses on simplification of the service registry and repository user experience. Before Version 8.5.5, it helped if the user had some knowledge of the WebSphere Service Registry and Repository data model. The main functions that a business user or casual IT user would be interested in, were not the case. With Version 8.5.5, the ability to find a service is simplified with the ability to use any keyword to identify a service, or set of services, from the name of the service or from the content of any service documentation, which is imported into WebSphere Service Registry and Repository. The service information is easy to peruse too and includes service owner and contact information, services consumed and being consumed, and operations and endpoint information.

Once a reusable service is discovered and researched in the manner described previously, the next step is to identify the application that needs to consume the service and indicate any SLA that is required as part of that consumption. WebSphere Service Registry and Repository now provides an easy and fast way for an application to request to consume a service.

Consultation with a number of existing users of WebSphere Service Registry and Repository and work with business partners consistently showed that most SOA governance users would prefer, and benefit from, a simplified service lifecycle. Starting with WebSphere Service Registry and Repository V8.5.5, users now have the option of loading an easy-to-use, simplified service management profile that provides a simple governance lifecycle for service management. The simplified lifecycle has many fewer states and is appropriate for those organizations that need to implement a simplified governance process.

Typically, there are many services in the enterprise. One barrier to loading all of those services into WebSphere Service Registry and Repository was the manual process of registering an individual service in WebSphere Service Registry and Repository. With Version 8.5.5, you have the option of bulk loading existing service information into WebSphere Service Registry and Repository from a spreadsheet. The bulk loading of existing service information makes that process simple and quick. It allows greater recognition and usage of all services in the enterprise. For the occasions where detailed WSDL and XSD information needs to be loaded, performance improvements are applied to the loading process. This is particularly useful if your services use large, industry-standardized XSDs.

An SOA helps IT organizations meet their increasingly complex challenges. SOA has the potential to drive business flexibility, performance, and innovation by better aligning your information technologies to your business objectives. Maximizing this potential depends on how well you govern the services in your SOA throughout the lifecycle. It also depends on the ability to measure your success.

Store, access, and manage information to support a successful SOA. Then report on the success. WebSphere Service Registry and Repository delivers management and governance capabilities that allow you to get the most business value from your SOA with the ability to measure success. It facilitates storing, accessing, and managing service information, called service metadata, along with service consumer information to easily select, invoke, govern, reuse, and report your services. WebSphere Service Registry and Repository has tight integration with IBM SOA Foundation, an integrated, open standards-based set of software, best practices, and patterns for SOA.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
