WebSphere® Application Server Community Edition V2.1 is the IBM® open source-based application server that supports the Javatm EE 5 standard. It is built on Apache Geronimo and integrated with best-of-breed open source technology such as Apache Tomcat, Apache Axis2, and Apache MyFaces. Its Eclipse-based development tooling further accelerates your application development. Its feature pack for Web 2.0 provides an IBM-supported solution for creating AJAX-based applications and mashups. All of these tools are available at no charge and backed by world-class support options from IBM. The flexible remote support options allow you to purchase the right level of support to meet your individual needs.

WebSphere Application Server Community Edition is suitable for organizations that need:

  • The ability to reduce costs of tactical deployments
  • Open source solutions for quick, frictionless access to application server technology with no upfront costs
  • A trusted vendor to provide reliable support and an upgrade path to more advanced capabilities as needed

Developers using Java EE 5-compliant WebSphere Application Server Community Edition already benefit from its preintegrated and tested set of services beyond the functionality of Apache Tomcat, such as Web Service 2.0, Web 2.0, Enterprise Java Beans 3.0, Java Message Service, and more. WebSphere Application Server Community Edition V2.1 further improves the documentation, development tooling, and application management capability. Applications can be deployed to an administratively defined group of servers. Gshell provides a command-line tool to automate the management of applications and servers.

You can also create lightweight server assemblies that contain just the components you need. This can translate to reduced costs, code reusability, leveraging of existing assets, and increased IT responsiveness to business needs. Additionally, you gain access to a comprehensive and proven portfolio of middleware products from the IBM WebSphere family. IBM provides a clear path to advanced capabilities as your needs grow over time.
